Citrus College
Virtual
CONVOCATION
2020
FRIDAY, AUGUST 21, 2020
Citrus College 1
Message from the
Superintendent/President
Welcome to the 2020-2021 academic year!
Traditionally, Citrus College kicks off
the fall semester with an action-packed
Convocation. This annual celebration
provides the college community with an
opportunity to reconnect with colleagues,
share information and plan for the
future. Due to the ongoing situation with
COVID-19, the format of this year’s event
has been altered; however, our desire to commemorate the start of a
new academic year remains the same. Today’s keynote presentation,
state of the college remarks and remote activities are reminders
that, while we may be separated by distance, we are united in our
commitment to serve students.
The college community’s dedication to student success has been
especially evident over the last several months. Although the buildings
on campus have been closed, our faculty and staff have invested
significant time and effort into keeping Citrus College virtually open for
our students. The creativity and flexibility exhibited during the spring
semester was nothing short of amazing. As a result, the 2019-2020
academic year can be deemed a success.
Reflecting on the progress we made during the previous year is always
a highlight of Convocation. Given the unprecedented challenges
we faced, these accomplishments are especially noteworthy. From
finalizing the 2020-2030 Educational and Facilities Master Plan to
starting work on our next five-year Strategic Plan, we have made great
strides toward creating the Citrus College of tomorrow.

Message from the
Superintendent/President
In addition to providing the college community with an opportunity
to reflect, Convocation also allows us to celebrate several outstanding
members of our community. Today, we will officially introduce the
faculty members, classified employees, supervisors and managers
who have recently joined our ranks or received promotions. We
will also shine a spotlight on the remarkable careers of this year’s
longevity recipients.
Finally, Convocation is a time of preparation. In addition to planning
for our eventual return to campus, Citrus College will address social
and racial injustice by continuing our Conversation and Call to Action
session in June. I am grateful that Ms. Azizi Williams and Ms. Emily
Singer from Sequoyah School in Pasadena will be joining us again for
our keynote.
As you review this program and participate in this year’s virtual
Convocation, my hope is that you are both proud of our past successes
and inspired to help the college overcome current obstacles and reach
its goals. I am certain that, with hard work and perseverance, there is no
limit to what we can achieve.
Best wishes for an amazing year!

CITRUS COLLEGE 2020
General Session:
“Identifying and Disrupting Bias”
Moderated by
Dr. Dana Hester and Ms. Nickawanna Shaw
Over the last several months, recurring acts of racial injustice and their
resulting protests have highlighted the need to address structural
racism throughout the United States. At Citrus College, we have been
challenged to uphold the core values of our educational mission and
effect positive change, both institutionally and throughout society. The
college took its first step toward becoming a more just and equitable
community by hosting a “Conversation and Call to Action” session for
employees in June. This productive event was followed by two similar
sessions for students.
The work we began at the end of the spring semester continues today
with our general session, “Identifying and Disrupting Bias.” Citrus
College is pleased to welcome back Ms. Azizi Williams and Ms. Emily
Singer from Sequoyah School in Pasadena as the session presenters.
We are confident that today’s presentation will provide valuable insight
and information in regards to diversity, sensitivity
and cultural awareness.

Mary Brawner, 30 Years
Faculty
Kinesiology and Athletics
Hired as a full-time faculty member in 1990,
Mary Brawner has served as an instructor,
assistant athletic director and women’s
volleyball coach at Citrus College. Over
the last three decades, she has watched
the college transform. For example, the
fitness center was once housed in a different
location, the track surface was brick dust
and the practice football field used to serve a variety of purposes. While the
campus looks different now, the college community hasn’t changed. “The
one thing that has stayed the same is the quality of the people at Citrus
College,” Ms. Brawner said. “I have always worked with the most amazing
faculty and staff who show the utmost dedication to their work.”
Dawn Dineley, 30 Years
Senior Buyer
Purchasing/Warehouse
“Citrus College was always the perfect place
for me,” said Dawn Dineley, senior buyer at
Citrus College. “As a lifelong Glendora resident
with children in local schools, Citrus offered me
the best opportunity for a fulfilling career while
maintaining a work-life balance.” Although
Ms. Dineley began working for the college as
a part-time employee, she received a full-time
position as a mailroom coordinator in 1990. She also worked as a purchasing
secretary and as a purchasing buyer before obtaining her current position.
“The campus has physically changed so much in the last 30 years, with many
remodeled and new buildings,” she said. “Yet, in many ways, it has remained
the same.”

Fe Lopez, 30 Years
Human Resources Technician II
Human Resources
“The faculty, staff and students of Citrus
College make it a great place to work,” said
Fe Lopez, human resources technician II.
“Everyone I have worked with has been very
friendly and helpful.” Before her recent move
to the human resources office, Ms. Lopez
served as an account clerk II, account clerk III,
accounting technician and payroll technician.
She has also been active on campus, participating in the 2009 accreditation
process and serving on a variety of other college committees and teams. She
credits her successful career to the friends and colleagues who shared their
knowledge and expertise. “All of the skills they taught me have shaped who I
am today,” she said.
Laura Shurtleff, 30 Years
Secretary
Student Health Center
Laura Shurtleff says the secret to her
successful career at Citrus College has been
the love she has for her work, her colleagues
and the students. Over the last 30 years, Ms.
Shurtleff has held a variety of positions in the
college’s Student Health Center, including
clerk typist, health services assistant and
secretary. However, her title isn’t the only
thing that has changed. “The campus has grown in terms of the number of
students enrolled and the number of programs offered,” Ms. Shurtleff said.
“Technology on campus has also changed significantly.” She adds that she
has also experienced growth: “I am much wiser and happier, and I don’t let
the little things bother me.”
Citrus College 18
LONGEVITY
April Thompson, 30 Years
Library Media Technician II
Language Arts and Library
When April Thompson first applied for a part-
time job in the Hayden Memorial Library, she
says she “failed miserably.” However, she was
ready when that same job became available
again in 1990. “I not only passed the test
and secured an interview, but I got the job,”
she said. Seven years later, Ms. Thompson
became a full-time library media technician
II. She refers to this as the “second greatest highlight of her time at Citrus
College.” Her first greatest highlight was earning an associate degree. “I was
an unmarried, under-educated female in my mid-30s when I enrolled,” she
said. “My greatest highlight was walking in the graduation ceremony and
earning my degree with highest honors.”
Ralph Tippins, 30 Years
Faculty
Mathematics and Business
Ralph Tippins was once the youngest faculty
member in the college’s mathematics program.
At that time, each discipline only had one or
two computers to share, and every classroom
had slate chalkboards. “Now, there are
computers on every desk and no chalkboards,”
he said. Mr. Tippins became a full-time
faculty member in 1990. He has also served
as an adjunct instructor, mathematics tutor, computer science instructor and
associate dean of mathematics and computer science. However, his greatest
highlight of his time at the college doesn’t concern his career. “Meeting my
wife at Citrus College has clearly been the highlight of my time here. At least
that is what I was told to say,” he jokes.

The Citrus College Foundation will continue supporting students this
fall by Providing Assistance for Student Success (PASS).
In spring 2020, the Citrus College Foundation provided an initial $50,000 grant that was used
to purchase gift cards and Chromebooks for students. The foundation partnered with student
life and leadership development to make more than 200 awards to help students stay the
course of their academic journey.
During this public health crisis, some students struggle daily to complete their courses, while
others lack support and technology to pursue their academic goals. Funds raised from the PASS
campaign directly benefit our students!
Please consider supporting the PASS campaign by making a gift today to help us help our
