Tobacco products can be with smoke forms (cigarettes, bidis, cigars, cigarillos, hukkah, kreteks) and
smokeless forms (dissolvable tobacco such as strips, sticks, orbs, compressed tobacco lozenges, snuffs,
snus). More than 4000 different chemicals (60 of such chemical can cause cancer) have been found in tobacco
smoke. There is no safe tobacco product and all of them contain Nicotine (which apparently gives the ‘kick’-
neuro stimulus) that can cause addiction and various other health effects. People especially in India generally
think that smokeless tobaccos are safe which is not true. It has been estimated that the number of tobacco
smokers worldwide has increased to 1.1 billion in 2019, with 7.7 million deaths every year globally attributed
directly to smoking. Sadly, second hand smoke (those who are exposed to others’ smoke) causes 1.2 million
deaths worldwide. Almost half of children regularly breathe air polluted by tobacco smoke in public places,
and 65,000 die each year attributableto second hand smoke. According to the Global Youth Tobacco Survey
(GYTS) conducted in 2019 by the international institute of population sciences, 8.5 % of school going
students (9.6% boys; 7.4% girls) between the age group of 13-15 yearsuse any tobacco products.

Tobacco smoking can affect nearly every organ in the body, causing many diseases and it is the leading
cause of preventable death. Smoking induces clot formation in blood vessels, inflammation & damage to
airways and lung parenchyma & it is carcinogenic. Smoking increases the risk for coronary artery disease
(heart attack) by 4 times; for stroke by 2-4 times; and by approximately 25 times for lung cancer development.
Smokers are prone to develop COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease), trigger frequent asthma
attacks and frequent respiratory infection (including tuberculosis) by lowering lung immunity. Smokingcan
cause cancer not only in lungs but in various regions such asoral cavity, larynx (voice box), esophagus (food
pipe), stomach, liver, pancreas, colon, rectum, kidney, urinary bladder & female genital tract (uterus, cervix),
acute myeloid leukemia. Smoking can also affect male & female fertility, cause multiple pregnancy issues, and
low birth weight in a baby. Smoking can increase risk of cataract in eyes, retinal degeneration (AMD). It has
also been associated with hypertension, poor control of type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis (bone loss), rheumatoid
arthritis, and decreased overall immunity. Tobacco products can affect the teeth &
gums. Tobacco smoking reduces the life expectancy from 6 to 10 years. According to
the latest British medical council research, 67% of smokers die from smoking related
illness.

Benefits of quitting smoking can be noticed as early as within few hours in reducing
the blood pressure and revert pulse rate to normal; improvement in lung function and
cough in 2-3 weeks; reduces the risk of developing most of the above diseases by
50% after 5-10 years of quitting. Those who quit in their early years benefit more. By
quitting smoking/tobacco, a person not only improves his health & life, but also
does justice to the world environment. Hence, its mostly a self-
motivationaldecision and one can definitely quit smoking with strong

IMA FAMILY SECURITY SCHEME OF IMA TNSB Dr.B.VENKATESAN

Dear Doctors, Greetings! M.S.(Ortho),D.Ortho
We invite all the FSS members for the 17th Annual General Body meeting of FSS
which will be held on 29.05.2022 at 2 pm @ Nagercoil IMA Hall, Ashramam - Suchindrum. FSS CHAIRMAN
We have paid all the claims in both FSS 1 & FSS 2. Around 7100 members of FSS 1 VENKATESH ORTHO
had paid the 28th AFC.We express our gratitude for the timely contributions and for the & TRAUMA CARE CENTRE
trust you all have on the scheme as well on the office bearers. 31-A, Narasimachari Road,
The death rate among FSS members is coming down. Dharmapuri-636701.

Deletion notice has been sent to all 26th defaulters on 1st May 2022 and request all [email protected]

FSS 2 : Yet to pay 4th due : 125. 4th reminder notice sends to all who has pending FSS SECRETARY
dues. Cell: 94435 80315
We carry the torch that the founders lit, with clear sense of purpose, cause and belief.
Though our scheme is a contributory scheme of late some members are comparing [email protected]
with life insurance policies. Hence it appears that we are facing onslaught of competition
with life insurance companies on one side and other side false/half-baked truth propaganda Dr. S.K. ANOOP
in the social media by some warriors who seek quick fix remedy for things happened long FSS TREASURER
ago in FSS and IMA TNSB, and the same is already on legal trial. Cell: 98942 21205
Since we have different perspectives adding new members is a long, uphill claim. Why [email protected]
we should join fss is getting fuzzier and fuzzier with each passing year. We need to steer
the FSS back to a time before the split.
Don’t let anyone tell that FSS’s best days are over, that the IMA spirit has been
vanquished. We’ve seen it triumph too often in our lives to stop believing in it now.
We the office bearers alone can’t pull all the strings or push all the buttons to make
everything work properly.
Support is not one-way street: ‘share each other’s burdens. Don’t get so engrossed in
your own problems that you forget others have problems too. Its in the give- and- take
of mutual support that we grow. Trust your gut feeling over outside advice and join in
FSS 1 & FSS 2 and secure your family.

With regards, Yours sincerely
