June 2024 03 Dr. K.M. Abul Hasan State President Mob: 98430 25300 drkmabulhasan@yahoo.com My Dear Colleague Greetings NEET Issues: Irregularities in NEET UG issue has taken the centre of discussion now and IMA feels that certainly the conduction of NEET 2024 was not fair and transparent. As the National Chairman of IMA JDN, I responded immediately and issued a statement at once which was very well covered in the entire National media. It pressurized NTA to call for an urgent Press meet and announced some remedies, which are still inadequate. We have demanded CBI enquiry in the whole scam on NEET UG exam, which is the very crucial for our medical aspirants. IMA Connect, IMA Nalamthana & IMA Medico Legal update are going on every month with increasing participation. Jeevan: I am very happy that many branches have started doing Jeevan BLS Programmes. We will be having a statewide mega Jeevan Programme in 100 places very soon, after CM’s appointment. Meeting with Health Minister: Myself and Dr Karthick Prabhu secretary met Health Minister and took all the issues with him like CEA, Doctors Day Awards and he assured us to meet us periodically to solve all the issues. 5 New Initiatives from IMA TNSB: 1. Overseas Branches for IMA TNSB: we are mobilising our Tamil Nadu Doctors working in Gulf, UK, USA & Australia to become members of IMA TNSB. There is overwhelming response from them and that will be inaugurated soon. 2. IMA FM Radio Station: This is a very disruptive innovation in the style of functioning of IMA. We can start it in 4 zones and engage people with right messages regarding lifestyle, Diet, overall healthcare. It would go long way in
04 June 2024 establishing a trustful relationship between doctors & people. 3. Acute Critical Care Course: designed to equip clinicians especially the new graduates with the essential skills and knowledge required to manage all acute and life threatening medical conditions. This comprehensive program, spanning three months combines interaction online lectures with practical hands on skills training. 4. Anti-Drug Abuse Activities: Our youth are falling into Drug Addiction more than ever before and as doctors we have to play an active role of educating parents and teachers about controlling this menace. We can also support the measures taken by Government and we would request them to include IMA in all the committees. We have formed Anti-Drug Abuse Awareness committee, and a meeting is planned on the eve of Anti-Drug Abuse Day on 26th June. 5. Doctors Citizen Forum: This particular initiative would definitely go a long way in reestablishing the lost trust on doctors by the people. I request all the branches to form a Forum involving important NGOs in your locality. FSS Yatra: North Zone FSS Yatra has already started working. Other zones also we are forming the FSS Yatra team. We may start getting new membership in large numbers very soon. Pallavaram Property being sold I am happy to share this good news with you all that we have made agreement for selling the Pallavaram property and the registration will be completed in July. IMA Rising ! Jai IMA ! Jai Hind !! With Kind Regards Dr KM Abul Hasan President, IMA TNSB National Chairman, IMA JDN

June 2024 11 July 1 is celebrated as Doctor’s Day in memory of Birth and Death Anniversary of the Doyen of Medical Profession Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy (1 July 1882 – 1 July 1962). A brilliant student, he passed his entrance examination from Patna Collegiate School in 1897 and FA examination from Patna College in 1899. In 1901 he graduated from Patna College with Honors in Mathematics and applied to both Bengal Engineering College Shibpur (now Bengal Engineering and Science University) and Calcutta Medical College (Now Medical College & Hospital Kolkata) He got his admission from both institutions but joined Calcutta Medical College as he received their acceptance letter first. While at medical school Bidhan came upon an inscription which read, “Whatever thy hands findeth to do, do it with thy might.” Bidhan was deeply impressed by these words and they became a source of inspiration for him throughout his life. Bidhan sailed for England with only Rs. 1200 in February of 1909 intending to enroll himself at St. Bartholomew’s to further his eduction. The Dean, reluctant to accept a student from Asia, rejected Bidhan’s application. Dr. Roy do mpt loose heart. Again and again he submitted his application until finally the Dean, after 30 admission requests, accepted Bidhan to the College. Within two years and three months, Bidhan completed his M.R.C.P. and F.R.C.S and returned home from England in 1911. On his return he taught at the Calcutta Medical College (now Medical College &
12 June 2024 Hospital Kolkata), then the Campbell Medical School and finally at the Carmicheal Medical College (now R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital) Dr. B.C. Roy played a key role in establishing Indian Instiute of Mental Health, infectious Disease Hospital and first ever Postgraduate Medical College in Kolkata. He was a competent Physician and a able academician. After completing FRCS and MRCP he served as Professor of Medicine, Fellow of Amercian Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygience and Vice Chancellore of Calcutta University. Dr. B.C. Roy’s contribution to Medical Profession and Indian Medical Association are immense. He was instrumental in starting IMA in the year 1928 and making it the largest professional organisation in the country. He served the association in various capacities including National President for two terms. Medical Council of India, the governing body of Allopathic Medicine was his brain child and he was the first president in 1939, the position he held till 1945. He was known as a great physician before he joined politics. There are innumerable stories about his feats in his profession. He acted as a physician in Alipur Central Jail Hospital, when he was interned there as a political prisoner. He went to Malaya to extend his helping hand to the Suffering Indians there. He also worked for the sufferers during the infamous Calcutta riots. He joined politics inspired by Deshbandhu Chittaranjan Das in 1920. He tried his best to industrialise West Bengal. He tried to establishin industrial hubs out of Kolkata. Industrial cities of Kalyani and Durgapur are testimony of his visionary ideas. It was a really difficult period for West Bengal when he was Chief Minsiter. The state had to face the gigantic task of rehabilitation of refugees from erstwhile East Pakistan. On the political front, he served as member of Bengal Legislative Council, Mayor of Calcutta. He became the first Chief Minister of West Bengal in 1948 and held the position till his death on July 1, 1962. Apart being able to deal with the painful issue of rehabilitating the Bengal refugees he strived to hard for the socio economic development and industrial growth of West Bengal. Inspite of his political schedules, he continued to serve the Medical Profession by devoting one hour everyday for the cause of poor patients and the profession. He remained as a bachelor. He gifted his house to the people of Bengal in the year 1961. The illustrious life and achievements of Dr. B.C. Roy for the cause of Medical Profession, the Society and the Country bestowed him with Bharat Ratna in 1961. Recognising his service the Government of India declared July First as Doctor’s Day in India. Let us all pledge ourselves once more to serve the Medical Profession and the Country in the golden path shown by Dr. B.C. Roy. He was Chief Minister of West Bengal for three terms-from 1948 till his death 1962.

IMA NHB West Zone Zonal Meeting was conducted successfully at Salem on2.6.24.We thank our speakers and members for enthusiastic participation. This was followed by Management Committee and General Body Meeting. The highlights of MCM Meeting isEnhancing Hospital Data We can now obtain comprehensive data from CEA, and add new members to our fold. MEMBERSHIP DRIVE :We are requesting our district coordinators to motivate new hospitals in their area to join our network. Additionally, we urge current members to renew their memberships and continue benefiting from our services. NHB’S OPINION ON CEA RENEWAL :The NHB recommends updating the CEA software. We believe that CEA should be optional and should not be integrated into the licensing requirements. This approach will ensure smoother operations and compliance for all hospitals. NHB NAME CHANGE :The NHB is being rebranded as the Private Hospitals and Nursing Home Board of IMA, Tamil Nadu, called in short as NHB only. This change includes formulating new trust rules, registering the new entity, and transitioning all current members. The exams were conducted in IMA Halls, Hospitals, Paramedical institutions/ Schools etc. We thank the Presidents and Secretaries for their sincere help in conducting the exam smoothly. The questions were received by the Presidents/ Secretaries and delivered to the exam centres on time. The exams were supervised by them/their staff, with additional invigilators. We also thank the Hospitals, Schools and the institutions who gave their premises for conducting exams. The practical exams were conducted in the hospitals centrally at various places. Overall, the exams were completed smoothly. Further process of correction and announcing the result will continue. We have around 150 registered Paramedical institutions under IMA TNSB Paramedical Wing. 10 Paramedical courses are being conducted (1 advanced course for three years, 7 are for two years Diploma courses and 2 are for one year certificate courses). In the year 2023-24, there were 2219 students admitted in I, II and III years from 88 institutions. However, only 1845 students only appeared for the final exams. Time to time test and Model exams conducted. We are trying to develop the quality of training by organizing weekly online classes on every Thursdays between 01.00 to 02.00 PM. Different Principals/Faculties from different institutions were conducting the online classes. For the academic year 2024-25, 33 institutions were already applied for the affiliation, most of the applications were approved and issued accreditation certificate, rest are in process, which will be completed before commencing the next academic year. We request the Paramedical institutions due for the renewal, is to apply immediately, paying Rs. 5000/- per course. No institution should continue the course without proper approval of IMA TNSB Paramedical Wing. We encourage all the IMA Branches to start IMA TNSB Paramedical Courses, which will be useful for the IMA Member hospitals, also job opportunity to many downtrodden/poor students, who are unable to go the higher studies by paying huge amount. Thanking you all for your support.
