Tiger Tales 1958-

a ^ M A C E ’ S LANE HIGH SCHOOL F O O TB A LL HISTORY
One lovely afternoon during the school year of 1957-58 thirty-nine boys of M ace’ s
Lane High School m et Mr. A. C. Jordan and Mr. R. J. Brown, Jr. (both instructors
at the sam e school) to becom e m em b ers of a football team, which was at that time
unorganized. This tells how the M.L.H.S. T igers football team first cam e into being.
These boys did not have any previous experience in playing football.
During the first meeting as in any other club, this one was organized. These boys
knew in o rd e r to b e co m e a good team they would need cooperation and lots of team
work. To insure this, Melvin Young and L eslie Pinkett were elected Co-Captains of the
team.
The m eetings continued and the number of m em bers decreased to twenty-six
instead of the original thirty-nine. After the boys were given the n ecessary inform a
tion about the gam e, they started pra ctice. They put in many long hours at hard prac-,
tice. Due to this, by the end of the season the number had again decreased to twenty-
two which was a great loss of seventeen boys. The remaining twenty-two continued
their hard p ra ctice and found them selves ready fo r the first game. The day fo r the first
game cam e, and as the M.L.H. T ig ers went out on the field to play D over, they were
nervous. At the end of the game there were no injuries, but D over had defeated them
25-0. The team returned home defeated, but continued with harder practice. As the
T igers walked out on the field fo r the second time they w ere again nervous and ended
with Georgetow n defeating them 33-0. The boys worked on. Finally they met A ccom ac.
With this b ecom in g their third gam e, the team had a little m ore experience and they
w ere not quite as nervous. B esides they could look on the side lines and hear their
schoolm ates cheering them to victory, because this was their second home game in
stead of away as the previous gam es. The T igers won 32-0 over A ccom ac. After this
victory the boys worked even harder during practice, and when they met Salisbury
they defeated them 13-6. The T igers now had a re co rd of 2-2 for their first season of
play with one gam e rem aining. This gam e was played at Salisbury, and Salisbury d e
feated the T ig e rs 19-6. After this the twenty-two boys w ere ready to hang up their
uniform s. The football season was over leaving them with a record of 3 losts and 2
wins. Even though the boys had hung their uniform s up they w ere by no means forgetting
football. They analyzed" the team s they had met and the results were: Georgetown,
toughest team; A cc o m a c , w orse team; D over, best back combination; Georgetown,
best line. The starring line up fo r the T ig ers during the football season was as follows:
Right End G Payton; Right Tackle, V. Thom as; Right Guard, J. Cornish and C. B a r
ham- Center C Young; Left Guard, N. Hatton; Left Tackle, P. Hooper; Left End, A.
Jones; Quarter Back, L. Pinkett; Right Half Back, W. Butler and E. Cephas; Left Half
Back J. M urray and R. Cornish; Full Back, M. Young and R. Askins. Other m em bers
include J. Jolley, H. Elliott, V. Jones, D. P arker, R. Jones, R. Young, and R. King.
The T igers closed their season with this in mind “ A Winner N ever Quits, and A Quitter
Never W in s.” This m arks the end of one season of activity fo r the team. We are w ait
ing fo r the next season to begin for we are sure it will be a good one.

H I G H L I G H T S
The person that kept the spirit alive was V ictor Jones
(who had a great sense of humor).
The m ost spiritual boys were: W illiam Batson, Roland
Jones and Carl Barham.
Most sin cere hearted and valuable player was Melvin
Young.
The m ajority of the football squad were dignified sen
io rs who just wish they had another year of football
exp erien ce at M a ce ’ s Lane High School.

The m em bers of the fir st football team pioneered the
way of v icto rie s during their first su ccessfu l victory
that w ill never perish fr o m their m e m o rie s .
