Within the following pages of TORCH we will
strive to examine our last year here at Delhaas. The
joys, sadnesses, the good times, and the trials, the
studies, works and enjoyments of the past year are
contained within this journal. Many things have
happened in the space of 12 months. Events that have
changed our lives. Our studies, our teachers, our
parents, and those strange events over which we have
no control have all helped to mold us into the people
we now are. May God watch over our paths as we go
forth into this strange, rapidly changing world of ours.

We the class of 1964, dedicate this TORCH to you, Mr. Richard Hagele.
Our three years pilgrimage at Delhaas has been a long, strengthening, acknowl
edging, and happy one. With you as our guidance counselor, a class advisor, and
“friend” the journey was made easier.
Your incessant patience and understanding with us, as students, has helped to
develop our self-confidence and temperament.
When we were faced with the question, “What am I going to do in the future?”
we soon found ourselves in your office. You willingly tried to guide and direct us.
Whenever there were activities at school everyone could be sure that you
would be there. There, as a friend, willing to help in whatever way possible.
It is with pleasure that we express our sincere appreciation to you. Thus we
dedicate our yearbook to Mr. Richard Hagele.

JOHN F. KENNEDY

On November 22, 1963, two shots rang out on a street in Dallas. These two shots, fired by a fanatic,
claimed the life of one of the greatest Presidents of the U.S.A. At 46, he was the youngest President to
die while serving his term of office.
On that day, the whole world stood still. It did not resume its normal pace for quite a few days.
With the speed and efficiency that commanded the respect of the entire nation, the 36th President of
the U.S. A., Lyndon B. Johnson, was sworn into office. Then began the long, sad journey back to Washing
ton.
Princes, kings, queens, and heads-of-state from the world over came to pay their last respects to our
fallen leader.
Thousands upon thousands of our countrymen followed in solemn procession past the bier that
bore his body. We cried in anguish with his widow and cried again when his son saluted his father
farewell. And a solemn grief and numbness came over us as the final shots of 21 gun salute rang out and
taps were played.
This great man will forever live on in our memories. Our greatest tribute to him would be to carry
on the works and programs that he felt were so important for our country. In our small way, we give
tribute to him by using selected portions of his inaugural speech as our running headlines.

LAWRENCE ALLEN DIEHL

We the graduating class of 1964 would like to take this opportunity to
express our condolences to the loving memory of Lawrence Allen Diehl.
We will all remember Larry as being a friendly and active member of our
class.
Therefore it is with our deepest sympathy that we dedicate this page in
memory of Larry Diehl.

Dear Members of the Graduating Class,

My fondest hopes are directed to you for great success
in whatever you may do. The diversified interests that you
have are indicative that a great deal of thought and prep
aration went into your decisions for the next step . May
these decisions be the right ones for you.
It is also with sadness that I say good-bye to a class
that I have known for six years. Your class has been one
of the finest groups of young people that I have had the
pleasure of serving.
Have patience. Be prudent in all that you do and
remember the words of Elizabeth Barrett Browning who
wrote in “Aurora Leigh”
“Let no one till his death
Be called unhappy.
Measure not the work
Until the day’s out and the labor done.

Very truly yours,

so many fine young men and women are taking another
step up on the ladder of life.
Please accept my sincere congratulations for the many
fine accomplishments that you have given Delhaas. Strive
always to work to the best of your ability so that in the
future we can be as proud of you as we are today.

One would agree that the students’ favorite portion of the day is 'lunch-time!” Above we find Marianna Spruhde and Carolyn Seidner being served
by Mrs. Nevaras, and Mrs. Zimmerman counting the day’s money. A special thanks is definitely on hand to our hard working cafeteria personnel.

The bus driver is just another friendly individual who the students come in
contact with every day. Thanks to the bus drivers many students arrive at
school everyday on time and safely.

What would we ever do without our Custodian Staff!!! Above we see (L to R.) Josephine Bono, Maryann
Springer, Yoeanda Bresia, George Shegda, Frank DiStefano, Rowland Smith, Hannah Melnick, and
Marlyn Russell, all smiles for the camera. These hard-working people keep our school a clean, and
fresh place to attend.

"Good Morning, this is Delhaas Guidance!" Mrs. Van Sciver, secretary of the Guidance
office, is one of the most liked people in the guidance office. Because of her helpful
ness and constant kindness she has gained the friendship of all the seniors.

The guidance office tries to direct the students into the field of
work which may be best for them. Each year the Juniors and Seniors
take the S.A.T.'s. Here we find Denny Osterdahl and Knowlton
Atterbeary concentrating on their tests!

Another way to help the students decide about their future is to ac
quaint them with colleges. A representative from Kalamazoo College
speaks to several of the seniors.
