114 SOCCER

The Delhaas Varsity Soccer Team fin
ished in fifth place this season with a 4-7-1
record in the Lower Bucks County Soccer
League. The overall team record was 5-10-1.
The Tigers were led by team captains Mor
ris Lovelace, Kevin Runey and Jim Cilestio.
Seniors Morris Lovelace and Shawn McClin-
tic received first team honors. Junior Pete
Warusz received Second Team League hon
ors and senior John Nottage received Hon
orable Mention. This year’s seniors were a
superb group of young men that were the
epitome of hard work and dedication. Our
seniors will be greatly missed, however their
inspiration will be long remembered in the
Delhaas High School soccer program. Re

SOCCER 115

The Junior Tigers ended their best soccer
season ever, while breaking three school re
cords. The team recorded the most victo
ries in one season (9), while Ricky Lovelace
scored twenty goals, most by a player in one
season and Ed Dikun recorded the most as
sists in one season (13). With a very young
team this year (six freshmen, six sopho
mores) having such a fine season, the "soc
cer power” that is here at Delhaas seems
destined to stay for a very long time.

The varsity hockey team had a rough season
this year. There were only three returning var
sity players; Sheryl Stinson. Alsheena Vaughn,
and Donna Hibbs, who were also co-captains
for the 1977 season. The girls worked very hard
despite the losing record. Miss Robinson wish

determination and dedication.

Although the J.V. Hockey season was not
successful in the win category this year,
most of the players did show potential for
next year’s varsity team. Our main problems
this year werei minimal experience and in
sufficient number of players for pre-season
practice. The. Delhaas hockey players were
complimented several times by opposing
teams and officials for their display of cour
tesy and good sportsmanship.

IX) FOOTBALL

The 1977 Delhaas Tiger football team ac
complished many of its goals during the sea
son. It was the first winning season since
Delhaas became a high school in 1972. It was
also a season which saw the Tigers defeat
Pennsbury for the first time in 22 years. The
Tigers for the first time were also a threat
to become the league champions.
The season began with four consecutive
wins, including one over state-ranked St. Jo
seph’s Prep, and a total domination of league
foe. Maple Point (35-7). The thirty-five
points scored against the Cougars were the
most ever by a Delhaas team. After the
opening four wins the Tigers went into a
slight tailspin before rebounding to defeat
Pennsbury (13-0) and brighten their chances
of a league title. A loss to Council Rock the
following week dimmed all the champion
ship hopes.
The Tigers finished the campaign with a
6-4 record and a bright outlook for the com
ing year. It is a great tribute to the Tiger
seniors who led the team into respectability.
It was the hard work and dedication of
these senior athletes that removed Delhaas
from the "soft-touch" category into a power
to be reckoned with.
The coaches and underclassmen owe a
great deal to the seniors, whose leadership
will be missed. They have helped lay the
foundation for what appears to be a strong
football program. If these young men put
forth the same effort in buildjng their lives,
they will find the same success they
achieved on the field. The senior Tigers

proved to everyone that they are WINNERSI
Coach Cardinal

FOOTBALL 01

The Delhaas J.V. football team's perfor
mance improved with each game of the season.
The team was in every contest until the final
quarter, where a lack of depth and experience
prevented the young Tigers from bringing
home a victory. The tougher the competition,
the better they played.
The J.V. season did go a long way in prepar
ing the underclassmen to compete on the varsi
ty level next year, as some fine performances
were turned in by members of the squad.

Coach Richard Jones

133 FOOTBALL

Overall, it was a disappointing year for
the Delhaas freshman football team. Al
though we failed to win any games, we were
"in” all but one until the fourth quarter. The
highlight of the season was a 0-0 tie with a
very strong Charles Boehm-Pennsbury team.
All season the offense was lead by Mike
Horton, Bret Colteryahn, John Williams, and
Frank Lubinski. The defense, which played
well all year, was anchored by Ted Schaum,
Cal Morrison, Steve Boccardo, and Winky
Miller. These are only a few of the forty
players who deserve a great deal of praise
for "sticking it out”. I’m looking forward
next year, when they come out for the varsi
ty team, to develop and improve their skills
and keep the winning football tradition here
at Delhaas.

04 GIRLS TENNIS

This year’s Girls Tennis team finished
with the best record in the school’s history.
The girls hustled to a 7-10 overall record
which placed them fifth in the Lower Bucks
League. The captains of the team were: Don
na Morgan and Cheryl Snyder. These girls
were instrumental in making us a most com
petitive team. Three other seniors. Donna
Felice. Theresa Ksyiak. and Wendy Stevens,
finished the season tied for the most match
es won. Cindi Chan. Nancy Yeagle. Eleanor
Kelly, and Lori Longstreet were the other
senior starters who played well this season.
Our record is not a true measure of the
season, as many of our losses were close. A
good indication of the improvement of our
tennis program, is that the number of overall

Standing- V icki Longstreet, Donna Morgan, Eleanor Kelly, Kim Underdown, Lori Longstreet, Wendy Stevens, sets won has more than doubled. All of the

It is hard to play on a team like the girls
tennis team, which is very unfamiliar to
most of the Delhaas studentsi but I feel that
we have come a long way. The past two
years the team has gone from hardly being
known, to winning the most matches in the
history of Delhaas High School. I think that
is quite an accompiishment.
We worked together as a team, and we
had a good time. too. I am looking forward to
seeing many more winning seasons from the
girls tennis team> and I would also like to
express our appreciation, as a team, to our
coach. Mr. Richard Cornwali.

136 CROSSCOUNTRY

This year’s cross country team was led by
senior Jim Ream. Although the team didn’t
win many meets, Jim was always the first
Delhaas runner to cross the finish line. He
finished first in dual meets against Wilson.
Hamilton West, Council Rock, and Bensalem.
Jim also recorded fifth place finishes in the
Mill Street Run and the Lower Bucks County
Championships.
John Dugan showed a lot of improvement
throughout the season, and should get bet
ter with two years of competition left. Also
competing this year was junior Karen Yea
gle, the only girl on the team. Karen trained
with the boys all year and ran very respect
able races in the girls’ Mill Street Run and
the girls’ country meet.

As an individual, you learn your own capa
bilities and from that you set achievable
goals. Personal triumphs, as well as defeats,
are common to this sport, but if there is only
one triumph during the year it makes the
whole season worthwhile.
As a team, there is a feeling of unity and
togetherness which is unique among sports
geared to the individual. Practicing with the
team everyday, you become aware of every
one’s ability and come to really appreciate
the effort expended by your teammates.
The team spirit, individual and collective
competition and the personal triumphs at

make it one of the most rewarding activities
in high school.

Q8 WRESTLING

This past wrestling season has not only
been successful in the win-loss column (13-
4), but has also been a most enjoyable exper
ience for all of us. From our first match in
early December, through the Christmas
Tournament, into the dual meet season and
concluding with the post season tourna
ments which the boys worked hard, im
proved and exhibited all the qualities neces
sary to be a championship team.
Few people thought we would be so suc
cessful this season. Almost every single indi
vidual and team record was broken or
equalled — truly a credit to this team of fine
young men.
No coach has been more proud of his team
for their accomplishments as well as the
way they conducted themselves throughout
the season. For the wonderful memories and

wrestler to gain the experience vital to a suc

team has a fine tradition and is respected
throughout the area as a wrestling power. This
respect is a credit to the dedication and desire
of the entire squad.

The Boys Basketball Team ended up with a 9-
II record which was the best Delhaas had had
since the split with Wilson in 1972. Many of the
losses were very close and with a few breaks
this team could have challenged for the League
Title.
Leading the tigers this year were seniors;
George Freeman and Mark Reid. George was
the leading scorer and playmaker. Mark was
second in scoring and leading rebounder.
Gregg Brewington played well when healthy,
but he missed three league games to illness or

Four players will be returning next year and
the tigers hope to continue to improve.

BOYS BASKtTBALL 133

This year was definitely a learning exper

9th grade program, combined with the lack
of playing time in an organized game situa
tion were very evident in early season play.
But as the season progressed, I think the
players adjusted very well to my style of
coaching and I to their style of playing. This
was evident in the mere fact that we won
more games in the second half of the sea
son.
At this time I would like to commend all
the players for their time and effort on a job
well done.

For the first time in Delhaas history,

District I playoffs. This was achieved
through hard work and dedication by:
Judy Ellner, Linda Fisher, Donna Hibbs,
Randy Johns, Mary Ann Morris. Karen
Richman, Sheryl Stinson, Alsheena

to advance to state competition, we did,
however, finish in second place in the
league with a 9-B record and an overall
record of 13-6. The most critical game for
the Tigers was against Maple Point where
we needed a victory to allow us to clinch
the second place berth in the league.
