Anyone who knows me can tell you I’m quite a talker and ask a lot of questions. But that’s ok. It shows I enjoy spending time with people and am interested in what they say. So, you can imagine how happy I was to return to the tradeshows last fall. The events were everything I hoped for and more. Where else can you see so many new products? Or, network with people in the industry who know about trends, technology, and the challenges of operating a successful business? Like the retailers who attend the shows, I work the floor and talk to manufacturers. A retailer needs to buy merchandise to stock the store shelves. My team and I are looking for opportunities to promote products, meet new manufacturers, and gain insights into the home improvement business. A recent Accenture survey, titled Life Reimagined: Mapping the Motivation that Matters for Today’s Consumers, looks at how consumers’ values and purpose have changed in the past 18 months. One US consumer says, “I’ve realized the importance of friendships, being closer to family, really valuing the things that truly matter in life.” NEW REALITY CHANGES ATTITUDES The survey was conducted in 22 countries among 25,000 consumers. The results identify two distinct consumer segments—the Traditional and the Reimagined. consumers in the Reimagined category have made monumental shifts in their attitudes and primarily focus on what matters most to them in life. They have been impacted by the pandemic and have adjusted to living in a time of uncertainty. This new reality motivates what the Reimagined buy and the causes they support. Companies and brands that are to survive must differentiate themselves once again and recognize the priorities of these emerging consumers. • 17 percent of the Traditional say they were unchanged by the pandemic • 33 percent of respondents are still evolving WHO ARE THE REIMAGINED CONSUMERS? These consumers are more alike than they are different. Gender, age, income, and employment status make little distinction on how they respond as a group. Pre-pandemic, there were identifiable patterns of behavior within individual demographic subsets. Although the Reimagined consumer’s response to the pandemic is based on uniquely personal experience, this broad group of individuals now expect a company’s purpose to align with their perspective on life. Previously, it was primarily young consumers who held that belief. • 50 percent say many companies disappointed them by not providing support and understanding during challenging times • 72 percent want brands to be highly ethical when sourcing services and materials • 55 percent would switch to another provider that promotes sustainable products and services WHAT MOTIVATES THEIR BUYING DECISIONS? Accenture’s research reveals the “Reimagined” have a “desire to feel better and have confidence in the products, services, and companies they patronize.” The survey pinpoints five new purchasing motivations for these consumers. • Health and safety (11 percent) • Service & Personal Care (14 percent) • Trust and Reputation (12 percent) • Product Origin (10 percent) • Health and safety (12 percent) Price and quality continue to be the most significant factor in the consumer buying decision. However, they have less influence for the Reimagined–Quality (21 percent) and Price (19 percent). Traditional was slightly higher. They ranked quality at (26 percent) and Price at (25 percent). Understanding and responding to the personal motivations of the Reimagined consumer is critical to the future success of every business. Their viewpoints are only the beginning of an emerging trend that will continue to grow over time. However, there are also younger retailers or new store owners who may be attending events for the first time. Practically, everyone can use a few tips on navigating the buying floor now that in-person events are up and running again. Remember to follow the safety protocols convention organizers have in place. One of the best ways to learn about new products and gain insights into industry trends is to attend a convention or trade show. When done right, the events create a sense of excitement and make participants feel good about spending three or four days engaging in a host of activities prepared especially for the occasion. Home improvement conventions tend to be high-energy affairs held in large convention centers. The booths are staffed by enthusiastic folks who hope to get a few minutes of your time. Ultimately, it’s all about buying and selling. However, before heading to the show, you can take steps to prepare and ensure things go smoothly. 14 CUTTINGEDGE Products Spring 2022 SPOTLIGHT ON BUSINESS CREATE A “MUST DO” LIST When you register for a market, you’ll receive tons of information from wholesalers and vendors about special deals, new products, networking activities, and educational sessions. Take the time to read it. Consider dividing activities among the attendees and ask each person to create a list of five top priorities. Hold a meeting to review everyone’s suggestions and build a master list. Be sure to include the contact person or vendor’s name, booth number, the reason for your visit, and time restrictions, if applicable. Remember to download convention Apps that will assist you in navigating the floor and receiving updates. SCHEDULE MEETINGS IN ADVANCE Long lines can be the norm at trade shows. But there are ways to avoid them. Preregister or schedule meetings before you arrive to secure a seat or time slot for activities that are high-priority. There are days when you will eat a late lunch or deal with long lines. Come prepared with snacks and water to tide you over—it also saves money. GET EDUCATED ON PRODUCTS This is a great time to get educated about the features and benefits of new products. Ask the salesperson to show you how the product works. Find out if it is currently popular with consumers or a new product launch. Visit the vendors on your list on the first or second day. However, don’t wait until the last minute since some vendors pack up and leave before the final day of the show, DRESS FOR COMFORT Walking the market floor for two or three days is an excellent exercise, but it’s tough on the feet if you aren’t wearing comfortable shoes. Bring two pairs and alternate days. Dress in casual clothing typically worn on outings with family or friends. If you plan to go out on the town, you might also want to pack dressier attire. Avoid overpacking since you may need space for a few things you pick up during the trip. BE SOCIAL AND NETWORK People from every state and country around the world attend the Market. Many retailers take this opportunity to catch up with old friends and meet new vendors. Sharing ideas and discussing common business challenges are often the beginning of long-term friendships. Remember to bring along business cards to share with other attendees. KEEP TRACK OF YOUR BADGE Things can get a little hectic when you’re wheeling and dealing. But remember to keep track of your badge and cart. It’s not uncommon to mistakenly grab the wrong cart after talking to a vendor or checking out a new product. TOUR THE SIGHTS Families often go on vacation during or after the convention. If fun is on your schedule, check into discount tickets and special offers at theme parks, restaurants, and tourist attractions. The information may be included in your attendance packet, or you can see what’s posted on Groupon or other online sites that promote discounted products, services, and vacations. WORK IT Go to Market prepared to come home with new products for your customers and plenty of ideas to share with your staff. At times, it’s a crazy, busy place. Spring 2022 CUTTINGEDGE Products 17 O ne of the highest compliments a consumer can give any retailer is to tell someone the company can be trusted and operate with integrity. Perhaps the accolades were prompted by receiving exceptional service, selling quality products at fair prices, or exceeding the person’s expectations at every step of the buying journey. Whatever the reasons, these comments are worth their weight in gold. The Better Business Bureau surveyed consumers to determine the importance of honesty and integrity when conducting business within the home improvement industry. The survey points out understanding customer expectations will help retailers figure out what matters most to customers. Business owners can then use the answers to create a positive customer experience to generate repeat business and a steady supply of referrals. THE POWER OF ONLINE REVIEWS One of the best sources to get insight into customer expectations is online reviews. But, managing online reviews and responding to negative ones can be difficult for small companies. However, the feedback from customer reviews is a valuable and powerful way to improve operations and profitability. The BBB spoke to Dr. Evans Baiya, a growth strategist and coach, who says, “We have to think about small targeted segments. You need to have a good understanding of the “what” and “how” of your customer. When you talk about new value—what is it that you are going to take to your customers this year that they instantly will find value in?” There’s no doubt customers read and respond to online reviews. • Almost 95 percent of customers read reviews before buying a product. (Spiegel) • Seventy-two percent of customers won’t decide before they read reviews. • (Testimonial Engine) • Ninety-three percent of customers use reviews to determine the quality of local businesses. (BrightLocal) HOW REVIEWS TRANSLATE INTO REVENUE Potential customers constantly seek information about local businesses on Google, Yelp, and Facebook. While many companies fear those negative reviews they may find posted by disgruntled customers —the situation is not as dire as it seems. Womply, a local commerce platform, surveyed 200,000 U.S. small businesses to understand the correlation between reviews and revenue better. Their research indicates that there are simple things retailers can do to manage and improve reviews and use them to generate income. • Claiming free listings on at least four review sites can earn a business 58 percent more revenue • Replying to about 25 percent of reviews can average 35 percent more revenue Five-star rated businesses have below-average sales. The best rating is 3.5 to 4.5 stars WHY RESPONDING TO REVIEWS MATTERS In the eyes of consumers, businesses that respond to positive or negative reviews are seen as being more credible since they actively engage with customers. Surprisingly, only 25 percent of companies respond to their online reviews. That means the vast majority fail to do so. However, when customers see that businesses are active on review sites, they are more prone to spend money with the company. • Responding to just one review can earn businesses four percent more than average • Businesses that respond to at least one review react to an average of 26 reviews HOW STAR RATINGS IMPACT REVENUE While there are several factors that business owners directly control with online reviews, star ratings fall into the hands of consumers. Low ratings on Google are more damaging to a businesses’ revenue than a low rating on Yelp or Facebook. Womply survey results indicate that high star rating matter, but not as much as local businesses think they do. Five-star rated establishments average much less revenue than the typical business because they have fewer reviews and are less established. They could also be compromised by buying fake reviews. • 3.5 stars to 4.5 stars is the sweet spot for a local business • 4 to 4.5 stars rating earns the highest average revenue FOCUS ON INCREASING THE NUMBER OF REVIEWS Google is the most critical review site for small businesses. The average number of reviews across all sites is 82.5. The survey shows a direct correlation between the number of reviews customers post and the company’s sales revenue. Businesses that exceed the average number of reviews generate 82 percent more annual revenue than those with less than the average number of reviews. • 82 reviews trends above-average levels • Thresholds above 82 reviews generate much higher levels of revenue • Businesses with over 400 reviews more than double the revenue of an average business Small businesses should do what is necessary to get as many authentic and honest reviews from customers as possible. Although some may be negative, customers value those as well. When organizations respond, potential purchasers view this as a desire to resolve the problem and ensure that the customer is satisfied with the service or product.

Revenue declined from $16.2 billion in 2015 to $15.3 billion in 2020, with intermittent growth spikes in individual years. According to experts, the primary reasons for fluctuations within the industry are consolidation, imports, and volatility. However, it appears there are brighter days ahead. It’s projected the industry will grow at a rate of 1.9 percent, generating $16.8 billion in revenue by 2025. CONFRONTING MAJOR CHALLENGES According to the State of the Greenhouse and Nursery Industry Report 2021, conducted by GroPro, three factors are slowing the industry’s growth. Consolidation: Major companies that previously purchased only from local nurseries are now sourcing from a broad range of suppliers. Price is the primary determining factor for large-scale purchases, making it more difficult for smaller nurseries to compete. Imports: The U.S. currently imports more nursery goods than it exports. Millennials see gardening as more than just a hobby; it’s an extension of their home and a chance to enhance outdoor living space,” says Kathleen Hennessy, head of Axiom’s horticulture marketing group. GARDENING IS THERAPEUTIC The primary reason respondents enjoy gardening is that it lowers stress and makes them feel healthier and happier. Secondary reasons were being outdoors with their families and spending time at home. The final reasons were growing food and creating a lovely space outdoors. Operating a garden center or nursery can be challenging. However, customers often know little about what quality of paint works best, how many gallons to buy, or how to apply it. Rather than asking for help, shoppers often wander around paint departments hoping to figure it all out for themselves. Here’s where independent retailers can step in to offer their customers expert advice that points them in the right direction. CHEAP PAINT COSTS MORE IN THE LONG RUN Paint consists of pigments (color), solvents (liquid), resins (binder), and additives (performance attributes). Less expensive paints are formulated with a high volume of solvents. This is the ingredient that makes paint liquid and evaporates as it dries. Adding more solvents reduces the pigments and resins by about 50 percent in a gallon of paint. Cheap paint is primarily water or mineral spirits. Once the paint is applied, it can require up to four coats before enough pigment is left on the wall to cover the original color. It’s best to encourage customers to trade-up by explaining the benefits of paints that are paint and primer in one, stain-blocking, or mold-killing without disparaging the opening price point brands. This information helps customers make informed decisions not solely based on cost. WATER-BASED (LATEX) VS. OIL-BASED (ALKYD) Water-based paint uses water as a solvent. It is also called latex paint, although it doesn’t contain latex. Those waterbased paint that has acrylic are acrylic-latex paints. These paints are the most common types used for painting homes. They clean up easily with soap and water, are environmentally friendly (low VOCs), dry quickly, and prevent mold and mildew. Alkyd paints are most commonly used for areas in the home that receive the most wear, such as floors, trim, and cabinets. The longer drying time makes it less prone to showing brush strokes. A few of the drawbacks to alkyd paint are its cost, pungent odor, and cleanup requiring mineral spirits or paint thinner. Additionally, municipalities may restrict Alkyd paints to reduce the levels of hazardous materials entering waste streams. SHEEN: HOW SHINY IS THE SURFACE? Customers can articulate if they want surfaces to look shiny or dull after painting. However, it’s harder to visualize the subtle nuances between glossier sheens. Flat paint has the slightest glow. It hides imperfections and has hardly any glare. Since this paint is not very washable, it is best used on ceilings. Eggshell has a moderate sheen with little glare. It hides imperfections, and since it’s scrubbable, it can be used on almost any wall in the living area. Eggshell and satin sheens are often used interchangeably. Semi-gloss is the preference for bathrooms, kitchens, and rooms that require washable and moisture-resistant paints. While eggshell and satin will also work, both should be used on surfaces that remain dry. Gloss paint is the shiniest sheen. Since it is durable and washable, it is an excellent option for doors, trims, and cabinets. Gloss reflects light and gives character to slight imperfections. HOW MANY GALLONS DO I NEED? The simplest way to estimate how many gallons of paint to buy is to multiply the wall height by wall width. Now divide the total square footage by 350 since one gallon of paint covers 350 square feet. This calculation will change dependent on the number of coats of paint that are used. SELECTING THE RIGHT BRUSHES OR ROLLERS Helping customers select the best paint tool for the job can generate add-on sales. The brush or roller chosen will depend on the type of paint used and the type of surface being covered. Some projects will require natural paintbrushes made of animal hair, whereas others will have better results with synthetic brushes. Large-scale projects such as walls, ceilings, and floors may require rollers. The width and size are based on the surface being painted. Rollers cover large surfaces quickly and efficiently and can be used repeatedly by replacing the cover. There are several other painting tools customers will need to give projects a finishing touch. Asking a few questions about the project will help ensure shoppers don’t have to return to buy products they overlooked on an earlier visit. HELP CUSTOMERS FIGURE IT OUT People who shop at the neighborhood hardware store aren’t necessarily trying to save money. They know the folks who work at the store are happy to help them select the right products and advise how to use them correctly. The painting looks simple on the surface, but it’s much deeper than it appears. When it comes to painting, customers don’t know what they don’t know. They’ll appreciate it if you can help them figure it out.
