Abiodun Olaku

Abiodun Olaku's talent can be traced back to his early days in Baptist Academy, Lagos, between 1970 and
1975. He rode on the back of the school's tradition which encouraged art and craft through a sustained
retinue of qualified, committed and motivating teachers in that segment of the educational curriculum.
Described by his lecturer, mentor and inspiration, world-renowned Nigerian Grand-master artist,
Professor Yusuf Grillo, as “Primus inter pares”, ABIODUN OLAKU has slowly but steadily transformed,
through a 35-year artistic sojourn, into a master artist in his own right. Indeed, he has become an
irresistible premium brand in the African art market and milieu, with an ever-growing frenzied following.
The solid foundation for this remarkably glorious, creative odyssey was laid in Nigeria's foremost art
institution, Yaba College of Technology, between 1976 and 1981, where Olaku had a comprehensive
orientation for his professional life under the watchful guidance of competent and committed lecturers
and instructors ably led by living legend, Yussuf Grillo and his lieutenants, namely, late (Soviet-trained Show time (Durbar)
sculptor) Isiaka Osunde and iconic Master Kolade Oshinowo.
Olaku worked for 7- years at the Federal Civil Service between 1982 and 1989. Following his 20 x 24 inches
resignation in February 1989, Olaku launched a blistering, unbroken campaign of studio practice in
company of his fledging colleagues and friends like late Alex Shyngle, Felix Osiemi and Bunmi Babatunde, Oil on canvas
as well as respected sculptor, Bisi Fakeye, at The National Studios of Modern Art, National Theatre, 2009 - 2010
Iganmu, Lagos. Horse Riders
An indigene of Ogun State, Nigeria, who was born on December 29, 1958, he works and lives in Lagos
with his family. He is also a member of the Society of Nigeria Artists (SNA); a founding member, inaugural
vice-president and trustee of the Guild of Professional Fine Artists of Nigeria (GFA); and one of the 10 x 14 inches
founders and a trustee of Universal Studios of Art, National Theatre, Lagos. Olaku is an avid sports Oil on paper
enthusiast, with a special interest in soccer and table tennis. He is a passionate fan of Chelsea FC, London. 2004

Segun Aiyesan

I was born in Benin City, Nigeria on March 18 1971. The second child among seven children. I
guess I was born an artist. My fascination with nature and colours started quite early. I can recall
myself fiddling with drawings and paints as early as four years old. As a young boy, my favourite
hobby was collecting comics and trying to draw the characters. I cannot remember my parents
Untitled helping to develop my talent at any point, so it was particularly difficult for me since I did not get
much encouragement. They, on the other hand tried to steer me in a different direction.
I love art. It propelled me to be better at many other things I had to do alongside, since I was
46 x 33 inches free to indulge in it, as long as nothing else suffered. My folks were glad it kept me busy and
Sam Ebohon Oil on canvas around. I never really realised a living can actually be made from art, so my development was

actually channelled towards self-fulfilment rather than perpetuating a career direction. I went on
to study Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife.
Sam graduated from the Yaba college of Nigeria. While there, I was at the same time keeping myself busy making and enjoying art. I
technology in 1990 with a HND (higher national inadvertently was preparing myself for a life as a professional artist, because by the time I

Since his graduation, he has braved it
through the years by going straight to studio

He started his painting career immediately 47.5 x 47.5

norm of working for pay in an establishment in Acrylic on canvas
need of his artistic skills. Rather, he started by 2012
using basic knowledge garnered from his
education, formal and informal, to make a living
while experimenting with his paintings in the
hope of a style that stands him out. And that was
exactly what he achieved.
His works are characterized by cress-cross
linear strokes which tend to abstract his paintings
thereby giving it a voice that is refreshingly new in
intensity and boldness coupled with the most
exquisite symphony of vision.
He has collected numerous awards in his
native country and abroad which includes a first
price in the 2009 edition of the Caterina de
Medici painting award and competition which
took place in Florence, Italy. This makes him the
number one in the world in that category. He has
