Life of the “Called Out” - The Church (50) Being Faithful to Jesus
Among the 16 sins, Paul calls the “works of the flesh,” nine have the quality of division, contrary to God’s desire, Christians must be unified (1 Corinthians 1:10). We have considered seven of these nine. The last two are dissensions and here- sies.
The Greek word translated, dissensions, means "to stand apart." It's not the at- titudes or processes we have observed in the previous sins, but rather the result – state of division – in which all sense of fellowship, togetherness and commu- nity are gone. This can be division between two people, two groups within a con- gregation or between two congregations.
Besides being in the list of the “works of the flesh,” the Greek word translated, dissensions, is used twice in the New Testament. “I fed you with milk and not with solid food...for you are still carnal. For where there are envy, strife, and divisions (dissensions; NKJV– jm) among you, are you not carnal and behaving like mere men?” (1 Cor 3:3). In other words, the Christians were not growing in faith and maturing into the likeness of Jesus (Ephesians 4:11-13, 20-24), but worse, they were divided as if being separate estranged groups in the same congregation.
The other usage is a warning – “...note, those who cause divisions and offenses, contrary to the doctrine which you learned, and avoid them” (Romans 16:17). The threat to God’s command of unity is so serious, that the church is commanded to withdraw fellowship from those who would cause division. Ultimately, divi- sion destroys the congregation.
The last sin is heresy, which in the New Testament (NT) means "belonging to a particular school of thought or belief." Any doctrine contrary to the NT is heresy. By teaching the doctrine Christ and His salvation, (heresy to the Jews), Paul was accused of dissension and forming a sect (Christianity (Acts 24:5)). Division is a difference about doctrine or where a person presses his own opinion (contrary to the Bible), and a party begins to form. Heresy is the next stage of develop- ment, where this belief becomes a cardinal doctrine and a sect is formed. Heresy is apostasy!
Division almost always develops and deepens in the following stages begin- ning with open contentions (#2), selfish ambitions (#5), dissensions (#6) and heresy (#7), all of which hinders a person from entering heaven (Gal 5:20-21).
