Life of the “Called Out” - The Church (60) Being Faithful to Jesus
Unity – what a challenge! That is God’s supreme goal for Christians. The apostle Paul pleaded with the Ephesian congregation “...to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called...endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace (Eph 1:1-3). Unity? Peace?
One thing that can be said about the devil is, he wants all of us to go to hell. Deceptive compromising of God’s order is one of his killing tools. That will prevent any semblance of unity and/or peace, first with God and then one an- other.
God’s prophet Jeremiah recounts that unfaithful condition among the Jews shortly before God unleashed His wrath, destroying the nation and taking the people into captivity for 70 years (Jer 7; 25:11-12). He delivered his speech at the temple door as the people came to worship. Jeremiah chastised them for believing they were in good standing with God because His temple was there and had been for over 300 years (Jer 7:4, 10). He charged them with evil behavior toward one another, thus no possibility of unity or peace (Jer 7:5-9). And he charged them with hideous idolatry, involving sexual licentiousness (Baalism) and child sacrifice (Jer 7:9, 18, 31). Church going Jews compro- mising to worship the world’s idols! They had broken God’s eternal command – “You shall have no other gods before Me” (Ex 20:3). Why?
Jeremiah tells us, “...this is what I commanded..., ‘Obey My voice, and I will be your God, and you shall be My people. And walk in all the ways that I have commanded you, that it may be well with you.’ Yet they did not obey or incline their ear, but followed the counsels and the dictates of their evil hearts, and went backward and not forward” (Jer 7:23-24). God sent prophets constantly for 800 years and yet the Jews rejected Him (Jer 7:25-26). Com- promise – no peace with God nor unity with Him or one another!
The apostle Paul continues, “There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all...” (Eph 4:4-6). In order to “walk worthy” (live in har- mony with God), one must seek unity and peace (Eph 1:1). Where is there unity today?
