The 2018 competition, hosted by Brookings Eco- nomic Development Corporation, encourages inventors, makers, in- novators and entrepreneurs to submit entries with the winning idea receiving up to $1,500.
With minimal requirements, it’s easy to participate! Submit a one page description including product or business name, description, the problem the product solves, market description and stage of de- velopment. Finalists will be asked to give a five-minute pitch of their idea to a panel of judges on Wednesday, February 21st. The dead- line for submissions is Tuesday, February 13th.
Ideas should be submitted to [email protected] or deliv- ered to Brookings Economic Development Corporation (BEDC) at 2301 Research Park Way, Suite 113, Brookings. Entries will be placed in either the General Business or Science/Technology cate- gories, and a total of $2,500 in prize money will be awarded with re- ceipt of money subject to winners reaching business milestones.
“Anyone who has a business or product idea is encouraged to enter the competition,” said Jennifer Quail, Director of Entrepreneur Sup- port. “In addition to promoting entrepreneurship and innovation in the community, this competition provides participants with the op- portunity to take their ideas to the next level of development.”
Questions about the Idea Competition may be directed to Quail at [email protected] or 605-697-8103.
BEDC’s Division of Entrepreneur Support provides networking op- portunities, education and resources to area entrepreneurs and small businesses. The program works with service providers, volun- teers, and emerging and small businesses to create a cohesive sup- port system for the entrepreneurial community.
Annual Photography Competition Reception and Awards Ceremony At the Brookings Arts Council
Thursday, January 11th will be an exciting day at the Brookings Arts Council as the winners of the print and online photography competition will be announced at the Reception from 4:30-6:30 pm with the awards presentation at 5:00 pm.
This judged competition and exhibit was open to all photographers 14 years of age and older. Heather Kuhlman, Executive Director, says, “We are thrilled at the creativity, subject matter and presentation of the 12 print submissions and 3 online submissions this year. The artists eye and professionalism are outstanding and we believe this to be one of our finest competitions ever!”
Awards will be given in color and black and white categories with 1st- 3rd cash place distinctions for the print division in each category, with a new People’s Choice category for the online submissions.
“We are also very pleased to have Shalista Anderson, a Sioux Falls professional photographer,as our Judge. Shalista’s years of experience and photographic expertise makes her a wonderful artist to share her love and knowledge of photography as an art and a business” said Kuhlman.
Shalista Anderson has been photographing weddings and portraits all over South Dakota and the US for over fifteen years. She's won awards from numerous photo groups including WPJA, FUJI and the AIBP. Shalista served on the South Dakota PPA Board for five years and has presented at groups such as Iowa PPA and SDPPA. Shalista owns a studio in southern Sioux Falls and now specializes in boudoir and sen- ior photography.
“I am excited to view the work of so many talented local photogra- phers,” said Anderson. “I am sure it will be a challenging and rewarding task.” The Awards Reception will be held on January 11th, from 4:30- 6:30 pm, with awards being presented at 5:00 pm. The exhibit will close on January 26th.

You Can Know You Have Eternal Life
Life of the “Called Out” - The Church (58) Being Faithful to Jesus
The apostle Paul wrote to the church at Corinth which was divided into fac- tions based upon who had baptized them (1 Corinthians 1:12-13). They failed to realize it did not matter who had baptized them, but only that they had been baptized into Christ in response to placing their trust in Jesus to forgive their sins and add them to His church (Mark 16:15-16; Acts 2:47; 22:16). Such di- visive thinking is the seeds of denominationalism, where man appeals to him- self rather than to all of God’s word. Like the smorgasbord offering, they picked and chose to suit our own tastes. Sadly, man often looks at God’s word with the same idea – pick and choose what I like, thereby rejecting some or all of God’s way.
Regarding that self deceptive attitude Paul wrote, “...because they did not re- ceive the love of the truth, that they might be saved. And for this reason God will send them strong delusion, that they should believe the lie, that they all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in un- righteousness” (2 Thessalonians 2:10-12).
God sent the prophet Jeremiah to ancient Israel to stand in the temple door warning those who were coming to worship God and calling them to repent of their evil – “Behold, you trust in lying words that cannot profit. Will you steal, murder, commit adultery, swear falsely, burn incense to Baal, and walk after other gods whom you do not know, and then come and stand before Me in this house (temple, jm) which is called by My name, and say, ‘We are de- livered to do all these abominations’?” (Jer 7:8-10). Church going Jews while worshiping idols and living in sin!
God had commanded them to “‘Obey My voice, and I will be your God, and you shall be My people. And walk in all the ways that I have commanded you, that it may be well with you.’ Yet they did not obey or incline their ear, but followed the counsels and the dictates of their evil hearts...” (Jer 17:23- 24). Jeremiah warned, “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked...” (Jer 17:9). Unity as God commanded (1 Cor 1:10) will never be achieved as along as thinks he is in fellowship with God even though fol- lowing the delusional dictates of his own desires.
