FINANCES AT THE BROOKINGS SUMMER ARTS FESTIVAL
By now you’re probably thinking about the money you’ve been faithfully putting away every month since the Brookings Summer Arts Festival of 2017. How can it
possibly be enough to fully
enjoy the Brookings
Summer Arts Festival of
2018? You know you’ll find
something special in more
than one of the 200+ art
booths. There are paintings,
pottery, jewelry, woodwork,
leather and fabric wares,
photography, wooden toys,
etc. The variety and quality
are outstanding, and the
biggest problem you’ll have is deciding which items should come home with you. Maybe you should start putting away more money these last weeks before the Festival! The Edibles and Naturals Area in the South part of the park features handmade soaps, honey,

food. You know you’ve been thinking about those crab fritters since
last year. And then you have the soba noodles, the quesadillas, the
ngte. riyaki sticks, the fresh apple crisp and ice cream, the fruit slushes,

the onion rings and the funnel cakes. You definitely won’t go home
hungry!
And, of course you can’t leave the park before you’ve paid a visit to
the Antiques area on the South side of the park by the Edibles and

and one returning after a several year absence. If antiques are a new
interest for you, the area is the perfect place for you to visit. The dealers are happy to share their knowledge with you, and you will

your mother has been looking for an eighth pink goblet to replace the Maornkekt nocked off the kitchen counter after a recent party. Just
remember to go to the Antiques area with the pattern name and color written down so, in case you’re lucky, you come home with the right goblet!

Welcome to the 47th Annual
Brookings Summer Arts Festival!
ENTERTAINMENT
Jami Lynn & the JAS Quintet. Though Jami Lynn’s latest Americana album earned her a top 25 listing from the UK’s Telegraph, honors from the Planet Bluegrass Folks Festival Songwriting Competition, and one of Culture Spot’s “50 Artists to Watch,” don’t rule out her jazz chops. Jami’s roots are in the old-time country, folk and polka of the Northeastern South Dakota jamborees of her childhood, but a love for the great ladies of jazz developed right alongside her love of the banjo. This collaboration with bassist Andrew Reinartz and The JAS Quintet has been a long time coming.
In May of 2017, Andrew and Jami got together with members of the Sioux Falls based JAS Quintet
for a few live recording sessions. Some of the songs were familiar jazz standards, some were
presented to the band the very evening in which they were recorded. Haunting ballads of the iconic
Billie Holiday, a Gillian Welch tune reimagined by Reinartz, as well as the scat-laden title track,
“Sparse,” co-written by Lynn and Reinartz, take the listener to the very roots of vocal jazz while
recoloring this musical landscape with modern influences of folk and a touch of rock. South Dakota Arts Council support is provided with funds from the State of South Dakota, through the Department of Tourism and the National Endowment for the Arts. sparsejazz.com
The Pistol Whippin Party Penguins. Straight from the great Mill City comes the Pistol Whippin Party Penguins. Don't let the name fool you! This is not a violent group of flightless aquatic birds looking for a party, but rather 5 self-proclaimed gentlemen, 2 guitars, a mandolin, a bucket of fiddles, an upright bass, a banjo, and a 4 part vocal harmony. As they prepare to release their 4th studio album, this quintet from Minneapolis strives to maintain the original spirit of the "string band" while continuing to play new original music and creative cover songs. The combination of folk, rock, blues, bluegrass and the occasional stage banter will create an experience that anyone can enjoy! pwppmusic.com
Good Morning Bedlam. Good Morning Bedlam has become an innovative force in the Midwest folk scene. Their shows are known for their contagious energy, with members careening about the stage, jumping and dancing with a wild playfulness. With tight soaring 3 part harmonies, and thumping kick-drum, they captivate their audience night after night with no intention of slowing down. Every song is a unique twist on what is generally dubbed as folk music. Just when you think you have Good Morning Bedlam pegged, they take you in another direction. You will be treated to a haunting waltz, whistling, jazz scatting and the euphoria of the violin melodies. When it comes to their lyrical storytelling, Isaak says, “We’re desperate to connect to people through the common human experiences that we write about and the exuberance of our live show. People have a lot of choices of how they’ll kick-back, so we intend to deliver a show where they can be free to share in whatever they need to—joy, grief, anger, gratefulness or bedlam!” goodmorningbedlam.com
The Roe Family Singers. Pinecastle Records recording artists the Roe Family Singers are a good-time, old-time hillbilly band from the tiny community of Kirkwood Hollow, MN. Led by wife and husband Kim Roe (Best Female Vocalist, City Pages/Village Voice) and Quillan Roe (Accident Clearinghouse), the band marries old-time sounds from barn-dances, fiddle pulls, and county fairs with the rock and roll passion of youth. Featuring banjo, autoharp, guitar and Appalachian clogging, the band and family of fans have been regularly filling Minneapolis’ 331 Club every Monday night since 2005. The Roe Family Singers mix original music and contemporary takes on old-time, traditional, and gospel tunes into one roiling and rollicking river of fresh yet familiar American music. Although Kim and Quillan started performing as a duo, these days they are most often joined by Dan Gaarder, lead guitar and vocals; Ric Lee, fiddle; and Eric Paulson, upright bass. roefamilysingers.com
Dennis Warner. Performing in over 100 cities each year, Americana/Folk/Acoustic musician and entertainer Dennis Warner captivates audiences with his smooth vocals and 6 and 12 string guitars. Besides being a gifted musician, Dennis Warner is also an outstanding entertainer, cleverly blending ballads, up-tempo songs, audience participation and humor into a memorable event. He is noted for his warm stage presence and ability to connect with his audience.
Though he calls Minnesota home, Warner loves to travel and has visited every state, touring solo and also with his band “The D’s.” On and off the stage, Dennis is personable and good-humored. South Dakota Arts Council support is provided with funds from the State of South Dakota, through the Department of Tourism, and the National Endowment for the Arts. warnersongs.com

LIVING HISTORY AREA
The festival started in 1972 with a pioneer theme because of its location, and this area has become a mainstay of the BSAF. In 1976, as part of the National Bicentennial Celebration,
a special area was set aside for historic traders and a muzzleloader target shoot. In 1984, the target shooting stopped and frontier crafts became the main attraction of the Living History Area.
The Brookings Renegade Muzzleloaders Club will be manning the main gate and guiding the parking for the valid handicapped vehicles. The Silver Creek Mavericks will greet exhibitors at the West gate to direct them to their parking areas and assist with large parcel pick-up. The 13th U.S. Infantry/Fort Dakota will hold a brief flag raising ceremony in front of the Bandshell both Saturday and Sunday at 10am.

Phil Baker. For 30 years, Phil Baker has used music to educate, entertain and enrich the lives of young people. Phil Baker is one of the most innovative and respected songwriters shaping children's music today. Known for his signature style - a red guitar, heartfelt lyrics, catchy tunes and quality musicianship and production - Baker involves the children throughout his show. He has dedicated his life to strengthening communities through music and performance and has made an indelible mark on South Dakota's music scene as well as its cultural landscape. His dynamic presentations tap the potential of today's youth, inviting them to make a difference in their families, schools and communities, while his infectious ability to connect with an audience through songs and activities leaves young people with the impression they can help make the world a better place. South Dakota Arts Council support is provided with funds from the State of South Dakota, through the Department of Tourism, and the National Endowment for the Arts. philbakermusic.com
Curtis & Loretta. Curtis & Loretta’s music comes straight from the heart. The husband and wife duo’s extraordinary harmonies and proficiency on a parade of stringed instruments create an alluring frame for their poignant original songs and carefully chosen traditional pieces from the British Isles, America and beyond. The current menagerie includes Celtic harp, mandocello, mandolin, guitars, clawhammer banjo, and National steel ukulele. 2018 BROOKINGS AREA MENTAL
HEALTH GUIDE NOW AVAILABLE
When facing crisis and mental health challenges, it can be over- whelming to navigate which resources exist to provide the help that is needed. In 2017, the Helpline Center began a partnership with the Brookings community to publish the Brookings Area Men- tal Health Guide to help individuals readily identify and select li- censed/credentialed practitioners and agencies. The 2018 Brookings Area Mental Health Guide features a variety of re- sources available in the community.
Since its launch in December 2017, the guides have been down- loaded 80 times. In addition to the Mental Health Guide, the Helpline Center has a robust database which allows users to search our online resources.
The 2018 Brookings Area Mental Health Guide is produced as an initiative of the Mental Health Taskforce and is funded by the City of Brookings and Brookings County. For additional information or questions, please call 211.

On June 25, approximately thirty South Dakota State University (SDSU) associate deans, department heads and researchers at- tended a workshop hosted by Brookings Economic Development Corporation (BEDC) and the Research Park at SDSU. The goal of the day-long event was to obtain a better understanding of the needs and challenges of private enterprise and determine how SDSU can best package their expertise related to precision agriculture in order to provide solutions and promote economic development in the Brookings area.
Workshop sessions focused on discovering research and business development opportunities for SDSU and Brookings, identifying SDSU best practices related to existing industry relationships, and further developing SDSU’s private sector value proposition related to precision agriculture. Breakout discussions involved specifying SDSU-specific assets related to geospatial imaging solutions, agron- omy and soil health concepts, and animal health and livestock man- agement. SDSU is the first university in the nation to offer a four-year degree program in precision agriculture.

“Precision agriculture represents a very relevant and extremely ac- tive area of academic and business activity,” said Daniel Scholl, SDSU Vice President of Research and Economic Development. “This workshop will prove to be instrumental in helping SDSU de- velop pathways for innovative research, development and education that will build industry relationships and strengthen our leadership role as a land grant university in this field.”

BEDC has contracted with Prassack as part of a larger initiative to provide assistance with identifying and building on SDSU’s core assets as a leader in precision agriculture and lever- aging the Brookings area as a place to build and expand business.
“The Brookings region is home to unique and significant assets and resources related to precision agriculture,” said Al Heuton, Executive Director of BEDC. “We will continue our work with Prassack and SDSU to develop business and research opportunities designed to grow the area economy.”

Life of the “Called Out” - The Church (83) Being Faithful to Jesus
In meeting the challenge God set before Christians to love Him with all of one’s heart and to imitate Christ, whose life and sacrifice define love (Mark 12:30; 1 Corinthians 11:1), we have considered what it means to love – giving up sin of all sorts, changes in attitude and behavior, the adap- tation of being Christlike – willingness to forgive, to endure persecution and rejection. To say the least of it, to love God completely is a radical transformation. The apostle Paul set forth this divine edict in simple terms “...present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God” (Romans 12:1-2).
Love involves not just an internal (in one’s spirit) transformation of mo- tivation and attitude toward God, but outwardly as well. Jesus summed it up in what He called the second commandment – “love your neighbor as yourself” (Mark 12:31). Last week, we considered the attitude of forgive- ness, which obviously is toward another person, one’s neighbor. To forgive requires a person to set aside the twins of pride and selfishness. Forgiveness is a divinely expected outgrowth of love. “...if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses” (Matthew 6:14- 15). The foundation of forgiveness is humility. Humility matures as we rec- ognize every one of us is a sinner and is in need of forgiveness by God. That levels the field.
The first step for each of us individually is to subdue this demon – pride – which has been our plague since the garden of Eden. King Solomon sum- marized the consequence of pride – “Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall” (Proverbs 16:18). The seriousness of this demon is revealed by Jesus when, in a list of sins, He included it along side of mur- der, fornication and blasphemy (Mark 7:21-23). Solomon’s contrasts high- light the absolute necessity to rid oneself of this arrogant attitude. “A man’s pride will bring him low, but the humble in spirit will retain honor” (Prv 29:23). “When pride comes, then comes shame; but with the humble is wis- dom” (Prv 11:2). A person will not truly forgive his neighbor until he has humbled himself to God first. All part of loving one’s neighbor as himself.
