Welcome to the 46th annual Brookings summer arts Festival!

Cocoon. get ready to relive the past and “rock on” to the music of this popular, local rock band from the 60s and 70s. Cocoon started in 1967 with a few young, Brookings boys playing rock cover tunes in their parent’s garage.
The band consisted of eric Wilson adams, lead singer, lyle Behrend, drummer, Tom Barnes, bass guitar, mike Barnes, lead guitar, and Wayne myers, keyboard and vocals.
during the 1970s they traveled the state, in their monster green bus, to many school proms, auditoriums, and bars. Cover tunes included songs by The Rolling stones, The Beatles, James gang, Jethro Tull, Cream, Jimi hendrix, led Zeppelin, Temptations, Yes, BB King, Chicago, and many others.
Kyle Knutson. Coining the phrase "Front Porch Blues", Kyle Knutson creates a sound that separates him from most singer/songwriter acts of today. With a predominate finger-picking style of guitar playing that becomes augmented by the tapping of his foot on a wooden plank. The occasional notes of a harmonica accompanied between vocal lines will leave you feeling as though you are on your front porch on a warm summers' eve kicking it easy with a cold beverage of choice in hand.
Kyle's songwriting is very mature, painting portraits with a unique influence of every day landscapes. "i like creating songs that can place a listener in a vantage point similar to watching a mini movie through lyrics." some of Kyle's stronger co-writing collaborations from his time spent in nashville can be heard on his latest release: 'Born With an Old soul.' Recording a majority of the instruments heard on the album himself, the year and a half long project is a representation of the artists' ability to express himself as songwriter, musician, and producer. kyleknutson.com
root river Jam. Root River Jam is an acoustic group based in southeast minnesota performing the original music of guitarist/songwriter dave Wilson. dave uses his life experiences as a canvas. Creating and melding artwork into song! Upright bassist Blake Bonde's formal classical training gives him a broad musical vocabulary, ranging from furious jazz pizzicato to lush arco. Violinist david Beyer, who grew up in missouri playing in fiddle contests at a young age, brings a twangy edge to Root River Jam’s jazzy and energetic sound. drummer miles Johnston has a dynamic style and broad musical background, bringing rhythmic finesse to the fusion styles of Root River Jam. rootriverjam.com
Curtis & loretta. Curtis & loretta’s music comes straight from the heart. The husband and wife duo’s extraordinary harmonies and proficiency on a parade of stringed instruments create an alluring frame for their poignant original songs, and carefully chosen traditional pieces from the British isles, america, and beyond. The current menagerie includes Celtic harp, mandocello, mandolin, guitars, clawhammer banjo, and national steel ukulele. south dakota arts Council support is provided with funds from the state of south dakota, through the department of Tourism, and the national endowment for the arts. curtisandloretta.com
Appearing throughout the day in the park: Curtis & Loretta, The “Living Statue” and MN Jack Sparrow.

LIVING HISTORY AREA
The festival started in 1972 with a pioneer theme because of its location, and this area has become a mainstay of the BSAF. In 1976, as part of the National Bicentennial Celebration, a special area was set aside for historic traders and a muzzleloader target shoot. In 1984, the target shooting stopped and frontier crafts became the main attraction of the Living History Area.
The Brookings Renegade Muzzleloaders Club will be manning the main gate and guiding the parking for the valid handicapped vehicles. The Silver Creek Mavericks will greet exhibitors at the west gate to direct them to their parking areas and assist with large parcel pick-up. faire Wynds. Specializing in historical entertainments, they invite you to see their 19th Century Prof. Chalmers Bodkin-Childs Amazing Patent Medicine and Magic Show and Flea Circus. Their goal is two fold—to entertain modern audiences, and educate them about entertainers of the past. Their shows consist of renaissance, 18th century, 19th century entertainment, as well as modern illusions and entertainments, both big and small.
Step up, step up! Right this way to the Medicine Show! A time to be amazed, be amused and have all of your cares, worries, aches and pains disappear! The Medicine Show has come to YOUR town! The venerable Flea Circus has a long and honorable history... O.K., maybe not “honorable”, but it HAS been around a good long time. Although most people associate it with the late 19th century, it actually traces its roots back to ‘vermin shows’ in ancient Egypt. Our fleas all come from good bleeding...I mean BREEDING stock. We use only the finest imported fleas that can trace their lineage to the finest of historical entertainers! fairewynds.com

This past year we have mourned the passing of Julie Huebner, a founding member of the Brookings Summer Arts Festival and wife of Dave Huebner. Julie and Dave have been the
foundation and guiding force of BSAF for the past 46 years. Julie’s calm demeanor, dry wit and love of all things Festival have kept the committee true to our mission of bringing all walks of life together to celebrate art, food, history and entertainment. Julie is missed by all who knew her.
BrooKInGS SUMMer ArTS feSTIVAL 2017 CoMMITTee MeMBerS
Coming from all different walks of life, the committee members of the Brookings Summer Arts Festival all have one thing in common: the desire to create the finest arts festival in the state of South Dakota. Each year, the thirty to forty volunteers come together once a month to plan and design a weekend of art, food and entertainment for the thousands of people who attend the annual event each year. It takes a diverse group of volunteers to put the festival together, and we could use your help. Please contact us at [email protected] or (605) 692-2787 with any questions and for meeting times.
