Tribute to the Co-Organizers Emma Jean Hubbard Stotts and Dr. Elma Hubbard Mardis May 2011 Unveiling of River City (TN) Chapter First History Book 18th Chapter Charter Day Celebration April 2018 Unveiling of River City (TN) Chapter Second History Book 25th Chapter Anniversary Emma Jean Hubbard Stotts Dr. Elma Hubbard Mardis
Abbreviated History of River City (TN) Chapter Located in the historical city of Memphis, Tennessee known for its barbeque, Beale Street, blues, Civil Rights, and the Mighty Mississippi River that is both an attraction and a thoroughfare for commerce and transportation, River City Sette was conceived during the balmy fall of 1987. It was then that Emma Jean Hubbard Stotts had a conversation with her daughter Carla Stotts Hills, who then was a member of the Hendersonville Chapter of The Links. Incorporated in Nashville, Tennessee, regarding the possibility of establishing a third chapter of The Links, Incorporated in Memphis, Tennessee. Emma Jean approached her sister, Dr. Elma Hubbard Mardis, with the idea. They called a few friends together with the hopes of chartering a third chapter in the Memphis area. On that 1997 fall day they became the co-organizers of a service organization, the River City Sette. This newly formed group was comprised of 30 dynamic women of diverse backgrounds, interests, strengths, and talents who united with the purpose of providing needed services to the Memphis community. River City Sette embarked on a journey to serve and enrich the lives of the citizens of Memphis with a medley of cultural, educational, spiritual, and civic programs and events. River City Sette is also extremely proud of its civic contributions through participating in fundraisers and as workers in the victorious election of the first Black mayor of Memphis, Tennessee in November 1991. After serving together as a loyal and committed group for almost seven years, River City Sette was approved as an interest group at the 28th National Assembly of The Links, Incorporated held June 29-July 3, 1992, in Dallas, Texas. The bonds of friendship and service were strengthened and persevered. On December 5, 1992, River City Sette launched its premier signature program, the Parent Youth Summit, co-sponsored with the City of Memphis and LeMoyne-Owen College, the only HBCU in Memphis. The Summit was held at the local HBCU, LeMoyne-Owen College. The theme was "Empowering Families” for the twenty-first century. And, in 1992, River City Sett adopted five families from public housing centers, as a follow-up of the Parent Youth Summit. A year and a half after the election of Memphis’s first African American mayor in November 1991, River City Sette joined The Links, Incorporated, an organization of accomplished dedicated women who are active in their local, national, and international communities. River City Sette became known as the River City Chapter of The Links, Incorporated, and celebrated its chartering into Linkdom on Saturday, May 15, 1993, at the historic Peabody Hotel in Memphis, Tennessee. National President Marion Schultz Sutherland and Chapter Establishment Officer Marion Sweeney installed 21 charter members and chapter officers on that Saturday. Legacy of Service Honorees Services to Youth One of the major initiatives for The Links, Incorporated is the National HBCU Initiative, noting the relevance of HBCUs’ past, present and future. This initiative falls under the Service to Youth, the first national program facet. River City supports the national initiative and has forged a relationship with LeMoyne-Owen College, the only HBCU in the city of Memphis beginning in 1994 with the chapter’s then signature program, the Parent Youth Summit. The chapter collaborated with LeMoyne-Owen College to sponsor “Having our Say, The Delaney Sisters First 100 Years.” The relationship has continued over the 30-year history of River City, including the completion of a $25,000 pledge, recently developing three scholarships at the college, named the Stotts-Mardis Scholarship (memorializing two-chapter founders, Emma Jean Stotts and Elma Mardis), a 1993 Charter Scholarship and the Presidential Scholarship. The chapter has hosted HBCU fairs and collaborated with others in hosting HBCU fairs. Donations to LeMoyne-Owen College have continued over the 30 years. Additionally, the chapter received the Beacon Award. Since education is the currency to economic mobility and professional advancement, we will continue to promote and encourage our connection with LeMoyne-Owen College and identify opportunities to support the College. The Arts River City’s relationship began with Hattiloo Theatre – a Black Repertory Theatre Company established in Memphis in 2013. This relationship with the Theatre was aligned with the second national program facet, The Arts. The Arts facet is designed to increase awareness of, and expand engagement in, arts activities throughout black communities across the country. Hattiloo Theatre is the only freestanding Black repertory theatre in five surrounding states and is known for offering high-quality, free programming and performances staged throughout the city, reaching over 5,000 people each year. River City completed its $25,000 pledge in support of the theatre and continues to support the theatre by serving as volunteers, sponsoring the plays, serving as actors, and more. River City has been recognized as a supporter on Hatillo’s Wall of Honor.
The Arts In alignment with the Classics through the Ages Program, River City embraced Collage Dance Collective, a professional ballet company and school in many impactful ways. The chapter has made significant financial contributions and supported its performances to make its entry into Memphis successful. River City provided a virtual, fund raising, performance in support of Collage during the pandemic. Additionally, River City supported the capital campaign, established a grant and provides scholarships to students who were selected by Collage to be mentored as they advanced their study of classical dance. Collage remains at the national forefront of inspiring the growth and diversity of ballet and River City is steadfast in their support of the first African American Ballet Company in the Mid-South Region. River City remains committed to support the arts and performances by youth and accomplished professional artists in an array of disciplines. National Trends and Services Memphis Shelby County Schools is devoted to preparing all students for success in learning, leadership, and life. It is the largest school district in the state of Tennessee and one of the top largest public education systems in America. The school system often partners with worthwhile initiatives and River City has enjoyed a strong partnership with MSCS. River City began its partnership with Memphis Shelby County Schools through its AwardWinning program, I AM A VOTER. Launched in 2012, the intent of this initiative was to create a Strategic Collaborative focused on Voter Education, Registration, Mobilization and Reform. Many of the chapter members are trained and certified as election commissioners. Annually, chapter members volunteer to participate in High School Voter Registration Drives. The chapter works collaboratively with school officials and the Shelby County Election Commission to register schools. The chapter has given more than 10,000 students a voice in local elections. The I AM A VOTER Strategic Collaborative on Voter Education, Registration, Mobilization and Reform aligns with the National Trends and Services facet which addresses the social inequities that persist in black communities throughout the United States.
International Trends and Services One of the core values of River City throughout its history has been the support of families from African nations who have immigrated to Memphis. The International Trends and Services facet provides services and delivers transformational programs to people of African ancestry globally so that they may have a better quality of life. River City partnered with the Binghampton Christian Academy (BCA), a private, Christian residential and day school whose student body is comprised primarily of children of African families. Through in-kind donations, monetary support, and the lending of professional expertise, River City has supported the Binghampton Christian Academy by implementing the Positivity Bench project, where we placed a bench on the grounds of BCA. Members have participated in various events including oratorical contests, Christmas programs, and reading programs. More specifically, many River City members participated in the World Read Aloud Day at BCA. Some individual River City members donated books. River City coordinated the effort to join BCA with the Mt. Carey School in Jamaica for a unique cultural exchange. River City’s partnership has been invaluable and greatly appreciated by the staff, students and parents. Health and Human Services Methodist South Hospital The partnership with Methodist Lebonheur Healthcare -Methodist South Hospital has been ongoing over the past three decades. . Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare provides quality healthcare, comprehensive patient and family-centered care to Memphis and Mid-South residents. Our partnership with Methodist is in line with the fifth facet, Health and Human Services which is to promote the maintenance of good health and the elimination of chronic health disparities in communities of color through education, health advocacy, and health resources. Through providing a location for Links2Success, business meetings and others, offering support of health fairs, providing information resources, recommending forum speakers for various events for our youth programs and making referrals of agencies, Methodist and River City have been staunch partners of River City. River City’s heralded determination to be a change agent in the effort to address healthcare issues and to eliminate healthcare disparities is readily apparent in the programs and events that it has sponsored and the agencies it has and continues to support financially.
