Preschool Autumn Excursion

This year for their autumn excursions, the little ones were exposed
to nature, the community and the world. They had a lot of fun
learning outside of the classroom. Pre-nursery and Nursery
children were amazed at seeing all the animals at the Shanghai
Zoo. K1 students learned more about fire safety at the local fire
station while K2s saw many showcases, inventions and works at
the different exhibitions at the Shanghai Science & Technology
Museum. They were still excited when they returned to school after
having learned many new, amazing things.

Beyond the Classroom

Primary School Autumn Excursion

The school buses were buzzing with excitement as the Primary School
students were taken to locations all over the city for their autumn excursions.
Shanghai Ocean Aquarium (G1), Chen Shan Botanical Gardens (G2), Shanghai
Zoo (G3), Shanghai Sports Park (G4) and Shanghai Natural History Museum
(G5) received our ecstatic students. Meanwhile, the G6s had their graduation
camp at Chongming Island. The children explored, learned and bonded as
they made connections between what they have learned in the classroom and
beyond in the real world.

Senior School Orientation Camps (G7 to G10)

To help students transition smoothly and effortlessly into the new grades, they kicked off the school
year with Orientation Camps. The CLSP and IGCSE students were hosted on the school premises
where they took part in various teambuilding activities to foster relationships with their peers and
teachers. It was also an opportunity for them to learn more about their programmes. They made new
friends and had fun, all while learning new skills.

53

Beyond the Classroom

Senior School IBDP Camp (G11 & G12)

While some students might feel overwhelmed as they anticipate a heavy workload at the start of the
school year, the dedicated faculty always strive to make the transition smooth, fun and beneficial.
The Grade 12s demonstrated excellent leadership abilities and planned and led the IBDP Orientation
Camp for the Grade 11 students. Other than fun bonding activities and brainstorming sessions, the
Grade 12s shared experiences and tips so that their juniors had a better idea of what was in store for
them. The camp was a great help to students as they strove for success throughout the year.

Senior School Social Impact Week (G7 to G11)

The seniors had a great opportunity to be a part of social change. During their Social Impact Week,
Grades 7 to Grades 11 went to different locations across Shanghai and learned through hands-on
experiences that aligned with the United National Sustainable Development Goals. They learned
about sustainability and climate issues, and did some farming alongside the local farmers. There’s no
better way to learn than through real-world experiences!

Student & Parent Transitions

Transitioning into Primary and Senior School means new teachers, new friends and different routines.
To help both students and parents not feel overwhelmed, there are a wide range of activities
throughout the year to make transitioning smooth. Parents attended information sessions where they
get a better understanding of what to expect when their child enters a new chapter in their school
career. The K2s got a taste of what it’s like to be in Primary School and played with their buddies in
Grade 1. They also had lunch in the Primary School canteen and did activities that Grade 1s usually
do. The Grade 7s took the Grade 6s under their wings to help prepare them for Senior School. They
shared experiences and enjoyed some fun activities together. The Grade 6s attended Senior School
lessons to get a taste of what lies ahead.

Primary CCA

Co-curricular Activities (CCA) are a wonderful way for students to try new things that pique their
interest. CCAs include basketball, swimming, rock climbing, fun with Math and Science, Chinese
debate, 3D design, dance and so much more. Through CCAs, our Primary students enhance their
skills, build character, improve their social-emotional competency and learn values, all of which better
prepare them for the future.

63

Sports and Activities

Primary School ASP

We have a wide variety of After School Programmes (ASP) that provide experiences designed to
upskill our students physically, emotionally, socially and intellectually. It is therefore a very enriching
programme where students get to explore their interests that help to develop their character and
positive attitudes towards school, family and the community. ASPs include a variety of sports,
STEAM lessons, music, crafts, Spanish and plenty more.

class this year! Students were able to develop their
leadership qualities, augment their social skills, and
explore their areas of interest. Students selected from
a variety of options and worked alongside peers and
teachers of similar mindsets. Some interesting choices
included: Forensic, Salsa, Painting for Charity and
Electrical Engineering!

Senior School ASP

Regardless of what the seniors are passionate about, they’re sure to find an ASP that interests
them. There are various activities ranging from sport to science to art that give students multiple
opportunities to develop many skills. These ASPs enhance students’ talents and passions, and foster
a great sense of community.

CISSA Badminton

SISAC Badminton Player: Li An CHIN
Our SISAC badminton season was unfortunately cut very short due to the lockdown. We were
welcomed to the team and had a few weeks of developing stronger as a team and practicing singles,
partners and mixed. We hope to be able participate in some games next year!

CISSA Badminton Coaches: Ms. Avegail VERGEL, Ms. Elaine TAN and Mr. ZHAO Yang
It was unfortunate that our season ended so abruptly as the young players who practiced tirelessly
were unable to showcase their talents on the court. Even through the uncertainty of whether the final
tournament would happen, the players never gave up developing their knowledge and skills. Hoping
the players continue to work on their doubles play as they move onto SISAC or continue their CISSA
journey next year.

Sports and Activities

CISSA, SISAC & ACAMIS Volleyball

CISSA Boys Volleyball Player: You Cheng DAI
It was a precious, wonderful, and reflective CISSA Volleyball season this year! I have learned how to
work with my teammates in order to produce an effective play. Looking towards next year, I would
wish to have more games with other schools and also more time to master my skills when playing
in a game. Overall, I love the CISSA Volleyball programme and if I can time travel to repeat Grade 8
again, I would still choose CISSA Volleyball ASP!
SISAC D1 Girls Volleyball Captain: Tsz Yan MAN
This volleyball season was filled with ups and downs, laughter and tears, sprained ankles and fingers
(A LOT OF THEM). We were all there for each other, hand in hand, along for the bumpy ride. It was
definitely a rocky start, but we quickly picked up the pace (and aggression). Even though we didn't
get the climatic ACAMIS end that we had wished, we still held our heads up high and finished the
season with a banger win.
SISAC D1 Boys Volleyball Captain: Seojin PARK
We were very fortunate to have interschool competitions this season after a year off due to the
pandemic. Although we were unable to get into the SISAC Cup tournament, we still believed
in ourselves and made the best out of the Plate Tournament. With this milestone, our team has
successfully reached, what I consider, the greatest achievement – ACAMIS CHAMPIONSHIP. More
than ever I’m proud of ourselves and I would like to thank all the members for their untiring effort
throughout the season. We were fortunate to celebrate this big win on our home court.

CISSA, SISAC Soccer

CISSA Girls Soccer Coach: Ms. Chantelle HO
It was another great turn out for CISSA Soccer this season with more than 30 girls coming out twice
a week to train and play. The Cross River Event was a great way to end the season as all of the girls
were able to watch and cheer each other on at SAS Pudong. Although some of the results did not go
our way, the ladies never gave up and they fought hard for one another, epitomising what it means
to be STRONGER TOGETHER.

CISSA Boys Soccer Coach: Mr. Luiz ZICARELLI
The boys flourished this year as they were all hungry to play since last year all students missed all
sporting competitions. The players came out every session eager to learn, committed to practicing
different tactics and the team grew stronger as a unit with every week. During the Cross River
Event, the boys played extremely well and used this tournament as a warm-up to the invitational
tournament which they eventually won.

SISAC D1 Boys Soccer Player: Ramith Reddy GAJJALA
We are extremely proud of our progress and efforts of the SISAC boys soccer team, not only during
season matches but also during our weekly training leading up to any game day. Even though we
had a rough start to the season, we persevered as a team and embraced the losses as an opportunity
to improve our skills moving forward. We played our hearts out and fought till the very last second
but we certainly weren't upset when we failed, because it always brought us together and a step
closer to success. GO SABRES!

The Soccer Invitational Tournament
The Soccer Invitational Tournament was a great way to end the season for our C1 Boys and Girls Soccer
Teams. Volunteers from Grade 7-12 all showed great Sabres Spirit and the teams visiting commended
how well the event was run by these wonderful students. This event was made even more special as
we were able to share the games with the wider community through the Sabres Broadcasting which
made our teams play harder as they know people at home were supporting them. Congratulations to
the boys who lifted the first-place trophy and to the girls who finished in third place.

SISAC & ACAMIS Basketball

SISAC D1 Girls Basketball Captain: Cheng U SHI
This year, we were finally able to play against other schools in Shanghai and participate in ACAMIS
Basketball to end the season. Our success was not only measured by our remarkable results during
the SISAC season (about 5 wins, 1 loss), but was also reflected in the vast improvement of each and
every player in the team. Although it is regretful not getting the first place in ACAMIS since it was a
tight game against WISS, the experience only motivated us to train and fight harder in the coming
years! We are proud of our second-place finish at ACAMIS and the trophy represents the most
memorable game of the tournament. Go SABRES!!!

Sports and Activities

SISAC Track & Field

SISAC Track & Field Player: Si-Fan CHEN
This year our season started strong with great determination. Many athletes have worked hard
outside in cold weather to break their own personal bests, or trying to recover at their peak
performance from injuries. We were fortunate to have a few fun and challenging trainings to show we
are stronger together. However, our season was cut short and we missed our track 2022 meet. It is
a big disappointment for many athletes especially for the seniors, as they won’t be able to compete
with together with the track and field family next year.

Sabres Swim Team

Other than learning how to swim during Physical Education lessons, students from Grade 2
onwards have the opportunity to join the SSIS Sabres Swim Team. Being part of the Shanghai Swim
League, our swimmers get to participate in 'fun' development meets and various swim events and
competitions. Take a look at how much our swim team have achieved this year!

SSIS Aquatics Director: Mr. Mark GLOVER
Well done to all of our swimmers who choose to take part in the swim trials or were fortunate to be
asked to join the swim team from their curriculum PE lessons, your energy and commitment shows
how much you enjoy and love your swimming, that makes us proud and more determined to help
you on your swim journey.

Sabres Crew

Sabres Crew has been doing an awesome job
keeping up the Sabres spirit. It’s a student-
led organisation promoting Sabres spirit and
hosting fun sport events and activities. Members
are allocated to different committees based
on their interests and skills, which include the
CISSA tournament, Sports Award Night, Sabres
Crew Creative, Sabres TV, Spirit Day Committee
and many more. This allows members to use
their skills for the betterment of the school
community. GO SABRES!
82

The New Chapter

Student Council

The student council provides students with the opportunity to practice and demonstrate their
leadership skills. Both Primary School and Senior School student councillors have been great role
models for their peers. They also planned events, shared ideas and raised funds for school functions.
This has helped them to improve on so many skills, including leadership, communication, public
speaking, organisation and teamwork. They will surely make wonderful future leaders!

83

Sports and Activities

Model United Nations (SSIMUN)

This year was the birth of Shanghai Singapore International Model United Nations (SSIMUN). While
there have been restrictions on travelling and gatherings, we didn’t want our students to miss
opportunities to solve world problems through MUN. Therefore, this year we decided to have our
own internal conference, where students could still practice their research, public speaking, writing
and debating skills to help prepare them for futures as global leaders.

84

The New Chapter

Robotics Scrimmage

Robots brought SSIS to life when they were placed in the arena to face off in different challenges
during a friendly scrimmage. We hosted 22 teams from five different schools under the Association
of China and Mongolia International Schools (ACAMIS). After months of hard work, they placed their
creations in the arena to show off their abilities. It was truly a student-led initiative. Students were
involved in organising the event, kept track of scores, prepared the arena after each battle and more.
The skills they practiced in this event makes for wonderful Future Global Leaders!

Our Community

Parent Education Programme

We pride ourselves in providing a holistic education. While we take care of children’s various needs,
we also extend a helping hand to parents who might feel they need to know more about their child’s
education and how to assist them at home. Various PEP workshops were available for parents
to choose from. Some of the topics included positive discipline, early literacy, STEAM, university
guidance counselling and ways of supporting children at home. The workshops were well attended
and parents left feeling inspired by our influential teachers.

TEC Christmas Gala

We joined a Christmas gala hosted by The Expatriate Center (TEC) to help spread some festive
cheer to the less fortunate. TEC held its annual Christmas Charity Gala on 4 December where guests
dressed to the nines and enjoyed an evening of fine dining, spectacular performances – including the
Senior School showband – and fundraising for three charities. The showstopper was our sustainable
Christmas tree that was designed and handmade by SSIS teachers and students. The evening got
everyone into the Christmas spirit.

Christmas Light Up at the Bund Centre

The Senior School choir sang carols at the Shanghai Bund Centre. They were led by Ms Chan Chan
HO. Our talented students sang the classics and spread the holiday spirit for the wider Shanghai
community. Representatives of several consulates were among the audience.

91

Our Community

iLead by Example Speakers

We welcomed amazing motivational speakers to the Senior
School assemblies as part of the iLead by Example Speaker
Series. From clapper rap and philanthropy to installation art –
the students were left feeling inspired and motivated to achieve
greatness! The students also had the opportunity to interact with
speakers, and asked their burning questions. The Speaker Series
aims to inspire our students’ intellectual curiosity, influence their
perspectives and action, and instill values and a global mindset.

Teachers’ Professional Training

Professional learning at SSIS is ongoing, with many external and internal professional development
participation opportunities, formal and informal sharing, and professional learning collaboration. This
does never stop, whether we are physically on campus or not.
Our Preschool and Primary School teachers have completed three successful online workshops
with National Institute of Education (NIE) Singapore. Other professional trainings include ‘Theory of
Knowledge’ workshop by Mr Michael DUNN, ‘Civic Online Reasoning Course’ by Standford University
and ‘Leading Effective Teams: For New and Aspiring Teacher Leaders’ by ACAMIS.
Last but not least, our annual internal professional development session: Mini Conferences - Virtual
IdeaSLAM 2022, was held online during the lockdown. Each teacher shared their individual ‘golden
nugget’ from the distance learning experience in terms of teaching and learning.

Online House Shirt Day

Distance learning could not stop the SSIS house spirit! Our community of students, staff and parents
celebrated House Shirt Day by donning house T-shirts and sharing their photos with us.
