Spiritual Transformation
Spiritual transformation is both an end in itself in that it brings glory to
God and it is a means to other ends that it enables us to mediate the
presence of Christ to others and to discern loving action in the world.
The true test of mature spirituality is obedience to Christ’s
commandments (Matthew 28:18-20), which always involves an increasing
capacity to love God and to love others. (Mark 12:30-31; I Corinthians 12; I
John 4:7)
Loving presence and action in the world include sharing our faith
(evangelism), giving generously of our resources, reconciliation, and
peacemaking (interpersonally and also across lines of race, gender,
socioeconomic status, and people groups), working for justice, exercising
compassion and care for the poor, and working for the betterment of life
in the human community in Jesus’ name.
While our spiritual practices certainly include private disciplines
(solitude and silence, prayer and meditation, scripture, self-examination
and confession, retreat, spiritual direction), to be effective they must also
include disciplines in the community (corporate prayer and worship,
teaching, communion, Sabbath, hospitality, caring for those in need,
spiritual friendship, and direction), and disciplines of engagement with
the world (evangelism, caring for the poor, compassion, justice, etc.)
Spiritual transformation takes place incrementally over time with others
in the context of disciplines and practices that open us to God. In
general, while we are still on this earth, our transformation will happen
by degrees (II Corinthians 3:18) and we need each other in order to grow.
(I Corinthians 12).
Paul’s teaching on spiritual transformation in Romans 12 and in the other
epistles is always given in the context of community—the body of Christ
with its many members. We are given to one another in the body of
Christ for mutual edification and to spur one another on to love and
good deeds. Our spiritual gifts are given, not primarily for our own
benefit or self-aggrandizement, but so we can be agents of grace for one
another, building up the Body of which we are only one part. All true
Christian spiritual formation is for the glory of God, for the abundance
of our own lives, and for the sake of others or it is not Christian spiritual
formation. For this, we toil and struggle with all the energy that God so
powerfully inspires within us.
While we cannot transform ourselves into the image of Christ, we can
create the conditions in which spiritual transformation can take place.
This is where spiritual practices come in. Spiritual practices are not
ways to make brownie points with God or to prove our spiritual
superiority to others. They are not a self-help program by which we take
control of our journey and change ourselves. Rather, spiritual disciplines
are concrete activities that we engage in in order to make ourselves
available for the work that only God can do.
This is what Paul is referring to when he appeals to the Christians in Rome
to “present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God,
which is your spiritual worship.” (Romans 12:1) “Therefore, brothers and
sisters, in view of the mercies of God, I urge you to present your bodies as a living
sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God; this is your true worship” He is saying that
we can be intentional about creating the conditions for transformation
by engaging disciplines that help us surrender ourselves to God –not just
in theory but in reality.
Spiritual disciplines are the main way we offer our bodies up to God as a
living sacrifice. We are doing what we can do with our bodies, our minds,
and our hearts. God then takes this simple offering of ourselves and does
with it what we cannot do, producing within us deeply ingrained habits
of love and peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit.
I deeply believe that Spiritual transformation is the process by which
Christ is formed in us …for the glory of God, for the abundance of our
own lives, and for the sake of others. (Romans 12:1, 2) reflects this
The possibility that human beings can be transformed to such an extent
that they image Christ is central to the message of the gospel and
therefore it is central to the mission of the Church. Spiritual
transformation in the lives of the transformed is a testimony to the
power of the Gospel and it results in an increased capacity to discern and
do the will of God.

The 3P's
The Plan, The Pain, The Purpose.
Philippians 4:13, Romans 8:37
Sometimes we just got sit in it. We are running from the pain. But God is
saying it's a part of my plan. As he told Jeremiah before I formed thee in
the belly I knew thee; so embrace the pain because it's all a part of God's
plan for you. You also must ask God to sharpen your discernment. He
will do just that by giving you the proper tools you will need.
Romans 8:37 Apostle Paul is simply saying you can handle the pain
because you are more than a conqueror, Jesus love has equipped you with
some special tools, so don't run from the pain embrace it. It's a part of
whom you were chosen to be. In your pain is someone's purpose.
Philippians 4:13 Paul was letting us know in this chapter that whatever
state you are in; to be content with it. If you are in the valley embrace it
or on the mountain top be cool with it. Because you can do all things
through Christ which strengthens you.
So see Romans 8:28 says And we know that all things work together for
good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his
purpose. To understand the 3P's you gotta Accept the Plan - Embrace the
Pain - Walk in the Purpose. Because it's all working for your good.
Because you been called and chosen. Embrace The 3P's.

Ingredients CHEESEBURGER SOUP
1/2 pound ground beef
4 tablespoons butter, divided
3/4 cup chopped onion
3/4 cup shredded carrots
3/4 cup diced celery
1 teaspoon dried basil
1 teaspoon dried parsley flakes
1-3/4 pounds (about 4 cups) cubed peeled potatoes
3 cups chicken broth
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
2 to 4 cups shredded Velveeta
1-1/2 cups whole milk
tap here
3/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon pepper
1/4 cup sour cream
Directions
In a large saucepan over medium heat, cook and crumble beef until no
longer pink, 6-8 minutes; drain and set aside. In the same saucepan, melt
1 tablespoon of butter over medium heat. Saute onion, carrots, celery,
basil, and parsley until vegetables are tender, about 10 minutes. Add
potatoes, ground beef, and broth; bring to a boil. Reduce heat; simmer,
covered, until potatoes are tender, 10-12 minutes.
Meanwhile, in a small skillet, melt the remaining butter. Add flour; cook
and stir until bubbly, 3-5 minutes. Add to soup; bring to a boil. Cook and
stir for 2 minutes. Reduce heat to low. Stir in cheese, milk, salt, and
pepper; cook until cheese melts. Remove from heat; blend in sour cream.
CHEESEBURGER SOUP TIPS
What can I substitute for the Velveeta and ground beef?
Any low melting-point cheeses, such as Swiss and cheddar, can be substituted
for the Velveeta. Or for a kick, use pepper jack. If you’re looking to cut some fat
from this soup, replace the ground beef with ground sirloin, round or turkey.
How do you store cheeseburger soup? Can I freeze it?
You can store soup by letting it cool completely and placing it in a tightly
covered container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Soups with starches and
dairy (like cheeseburger soup) are not ideal for freezing. But these soups are!
Can I add bacon?
Yes, you can always add bacon. Top bowls with crumbled cooked bacon for a
bacon-cheeseburger twist.
September Meditation
By Burton D Carley
I do not know if the seasons remember their history or if the
days and nights by which we count time remember their own
passing.
I do not know if the oak tree remembers its planting or if the
pine remembers its slow climb toward sun and stars.
I do not know if the squirrel remembers last fall's gathering or
if the bluejay remembers the meaning of snow.
I do not know if the air remembers September or if the night
remembers the moon.
I do not know if the earth remembers the flowers from last
spring or if the evergreen remembers that it shall stay so.
Perhaps that is the reason for our births -- to be the memory
for creation.
Perhaps salvation is something very different than anyone
ever expected. Perhaps this will be the only question we will
have to answer: "What can you tell me about September?"

"Two steps forward, one step back."
It's just how it goes sometimes in life.
Sometimes we are on the fast track, sometimes we are stuck, sometimes we
move along, and sometimes....we take a couple of steps back. It's all good.
The step back is probably more important than I've given it credit for,
honestly. Taking a step back allows us to see things from a different
perspective, maybe to better see things in their wholeness. Like when you
take a step back from a painting or sit in the back row at the movies... you
get a better sense for the "whole picture".
The problem I have is that one step back can easily turn into two, or three,
or four steps back. Then I get upset with myself, which hinders me from
moving on, and promotes a lot of negative energy.
The way I see it now... "two steps forward, one step back" is really not that
bad at all. It means constant progress (as long as there are two steps forward
for each step back, you will never fall behind). It also means that there is
always the ability to assess the whole picture before moving on, which
would probably result in better decision-making anyways.
So from now on, I am trying to move forward, but also to embrace the step
back when it comes along. I know one step back doesn't HAVE to mean two
steps back, and two steps back don't HAVE to mean three or four steps back.
Sometimes a step back is just a step back, and it can make us better if we use
it wisely.
In a lot of ways, I have taken a step (or two, or three, or four..) back from the
progress I started to make. With this blog especially!!! I haven't made a post
in almost 2 months!
Not gonna lie, I started down that spiral back to old ways and habits of
thought...
But then I came back, to realize that I know much more now. I can see
the difference SO clearly in my life and my happiness from when I was
making consistent progress (giving myself physical activity, writing in
my blog, reminding myself to think positive, being productive even with
the little things) to when I started getting stuck and falling behind ("oh I
missed two days of working out, so who cares if I miss three or four" or
"I'm already bleeding so why not make it worse, either way, it's fucked
up" or "I'm probably not going to accomplish these things anyways so
why even try"). My steps back have allowed me to see myself objectively
like this, and it motivates me to want to keep getting better, becoming a
better person, for myself and also for everyone else.
ANNNNNNNND not to mention I had a little epiphany about my life's
path since I last wrote to you, so despite the slight backtracking thus far, I
am making moves to follow my passion and create the life I want.
Literally.
I'll keep you posted ;)
