Girl Scouts Polar Bear Survivor Challenge
Those words can’t even begin to resonate the appreci-
ation that we have for the overwhelming support we have
received these past few months. Family, friends, acquain-
tances and strangers have touched, and will be in our hearts
forever. Your generosity and prayers have helped and con-
tinue to help us get through each day. We are hopeful that
this small gesture of appreciation reaches each and every
one of you.
As for an update, Sean is a survivor with an overwhelm-
ing strength to set goals for a future. It is your support that
has given him the foundation to build on and the continued
ability to ride this rollercoaster.

“…if we accept that a mother can kill even
her own child, how can we tell other people
not to kill one another?”
Saint Teresa of Calcutta
(Mother Teresa)
Our Nation at its founding – Life is a Gift: Our Nation was founded on the principle that each human life is a gift given by our Creator God. Each one of us is valuable be-
yond measure and is endowed with rights, specifically because God has poured His creative genius into making each one of us.
Our Nation today – Life is Disposable: On January 22, 1973, the U.S. Supreme Court took away the right to life of unborn children. In the ensuing forty-five years, over 60
1
million American babies have been killed by being surgically ripped from the safety and warmth of their mothers’ wombs. Millions more have been killed by so-called “con-
traceptives” which can cause very early abortions. 2
Our Nation’s future – A Culture of Death? Instead of protecting life, the Supreme Court made it the role of government to protect killing. The result has been to put all human
lives at risk. After 45 years of killing innocent children through abortion, our Nation is seeing the right to life eroded in other ways. The cancers of assisted suicide and eutha-
nasia are infecting our Nation, putting elderly, disabled, and ill people increasingly at risk of being killed against their wishes. What can be done?
Help Bring America Back to Life: It’s time to return to the view that every human life is a gift from God to be welcomed, respected, and protected. While abortion pits a
mother against her preborn child, they are not each other’s enemies. We can love and care for them both, even in difficult circumstances. And, in times of illness or disabili-

to a culture of death.. We are dedicated to protecting life -- Join us!

Cognitive decline provides another
reason to quit smoking
Smoking can damage blood vessels, which may be linked
to cognitive decline and dementia.
Smokers have scores of reasons to give up the habit. In
addition to contributing to cardiovascular disease, lung can-
cer and other lung ailments, cancers elsewhere in the body,
wrinkled skin, and diseases of the eyes, nose and mouth,
smoking may also contribute to cognitive decline.
There’s growing evidence suggesting that using ciga-
rettes can affect the brain in negative ways, including caus-
ing cognitive decline as early as age 45. According to the
study “Impact of Smoking on Cognitive Decline in Early
Old Age,” led by Severine Sabia, as published in the journal
Archives of General Psychiatry, smoking is a possible risk
factor for dementia, although the impact smoking has on the
brain may have been underestimated in elderly populations
because of the general shorter life span of smokers.
Study participants were given a battery of tests in mem-
ory, vocabulary and executive function that included rea-
soning and fluency, and a global cognitive score. Both men
and women participated (5,099 men and 2,137 women, with
a mean age of 56), and smoking history was recorded over
the 10-year assessment period. An analysis revealed that
a cognitive decline occurred in all tests except vocabulary
among all participants, but mostly in men. However, fast-
er cognitive decline was observed among current smokers
compared with those who had never smoked. The size of
the effect associated with smoking was similar to that of 10
years of aging.
Findings are similar to other research being done on
the topic of smoking and its impact on the brain. The Alz-
heimer’s Society states that smoking is bad for the heart,
lungs and vascular system - including the blood vessels that
feed oxygen and nutrients to the brain. Recent research has
shown that smoking is a significant risk factor for vascular
dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, with smokers twice as
likely to develop the disease as nonsmokers.
The Mayo Clinic defines vascular dementia as problems
with reasoning, planning, judgement, memory and other
thought processes caused by brain damage from impaired
blood flow to the brain. Factors that increase the risk for
vascular dementia are high cholesterol and smoking.
Dementia can be brought on by stroke, whether it’s a
large stroke or a series of mini-strokes. WebMD says vas-
