SWCD Milkweed Pod Collection JVS students get High-Tech learning opportunity
For the third year in a row, Lorain County Soil & Water
Conservation District (SWCD) will be a Common Milkweed
pod collection center, in coordination with the Ohio Pollinator
Habitat Initiative (OPHI). Since the project started in 2015, vol-
unteers have collected approximately 5,000 gallons of common
milkweed seed pods, totaling over 22 million seeds! Milkweed
is the only host plant for the Monarch butterfly for egg laying
and caterpillar rearing. It also serves as a food source for Mon-
archs, as well as many other pollinator species. The disappear-
ance of milkweed across the U.S. has contributed to the 80%
decline of the eastern Monarch Butterfly population over the
last 20 years. We are working hard to change this, and you can
help! Let’s make our collection efforts in 2018 even better by
following these simple tips!
Make sure that before you collect seed, you become famil-
iar with the common milkweed to avoid harvesting pods from
similar plants such as hemp dogbane and swamp milkweed. It
is best to collect the pods when they are dry, grey or brown. If
the center seam pops with gentle pressure, they can be harvest-
ed. Store the pods in paper bags; plastic bags collect unwanted
moisture. Put the date and county collected on the bag when
you turn them in. Keep the pods in a cool, dry area until you can
deliver them to the nearest collection site.
Collections will be taken until November 1. The nearest
collection site is Lorain SWCD, 42110 Russia Rd., in Elyria
(Lorain County Agricultural Center’s lobby). For more infor-
mation, visit http://www.agri.ohio.gov/divs/SWC/searchlo-
calSWCD.aspx. For questions, call (440) 326-5800.
Fun at Columbia Fest
Industrial Equipment Mechanic seniors proudly stand by the tractor with instructor Mason Bremke, Superintendent Dr. Fair-
cloth, Principal Petitti and Wellington Implement GM, Mr. Stannard
Thanks to the partnership and generosity of the Wellington Implement Company, Lorain County JVS students in the
Industrial Equipment Mechanics (IEM) Program have a unique opportunity to be trained on one of the most hi-tech pieces
of farm equipment on the market.
Tom Stannard, General Manager of Wellington Implement, delivered a Case IH Maxxum 135 tractor to the JVS IEM
students, who will have the opportunity to learn on this high-tech piece of machinery for the 2018/19 school year. According
to Stannard, this tractor, valued at close to $200,000, is made in Basildon, UK, is equipped with all the same technology
that the larger tractors have and the series of these tractors start at 90 PTO horsepower and go up to 130 PTO horsepower.
Stannard said it is really hard to find skilled technicians that can work on the high-tech equipment. “What works best
for us, is to bring young people in that have a strong work ethic and have had exposure to this type of equipment. The
technology changes so fast, that is why the JVS is so important, because having students that come from a career-technical
background, means they are more prepared for our workforce.”
Mason Bremke, Industrial Equipment Mechanics Instructor and 2011 graduate of the same program, is excited to have
this donation as part of his lab, especially for his first year teaching at the JVS. “My students are the future techs of the
world, and a donation like this helps them develop the skills they need to be ready for their career field.”
