Eagle Scout project

Paul Hornbeck’s Buddy Benches.
Wellington High School junior, Paul Hornbeck, recently
completed his project for Eagle Scout certification and we are
grateful to be part of his efforts. Paul constructed two Buddy
Benches for the Westwood Elementary School playground.
The Buddy Bench program was created a few years ago by
a young student in Pennsylvania as a way to spread kindness
and foster friendships among students at recess. Kids who feel
lonely are encouraged to sit on the bench and other students
are encouraged to can ask them to join in playing. Paul solicit-
ed donations to pay for supplies and completed the work with
help from his fellow scouts and others. Superintendent Edward
Weber wishes to thank everyone for providing the elementary
students with such an important addition to the playground.
“Growing Nutrition” program

LCOOA and Thrive are co-sponsor a “Growing Nutrition”
program for qualified southern Lorain County residents.
“Growing Nutrition” is a program to facilitate growing fresh
produce at your home. Children and families who already qual-
ify for free/reduced lunches, or are at least 60 years old and
live in Southern Lorain County can apply for this program.
Twenty-five eligible applicants will be given supplies to grow
produce at their home, such as a raised wooden garden planter,
soil, trowel, 3-4 plants, seeds, wire for vines and tomato cages.
This project will begin in May and finish at the end of Au-
gust. Distribution of supplies will be through Well-Help and
the Southern Satellite Office and the Lorain County Office on
Aging. Each participant will receive a production log tracking
the success of their garden which will be submitted at the close
of August. Throughout the growing season one contact will be
made to check the garden progress and also provide assistance
with pest or disease management if necessary.
Apply now to grow your own produce! To apply, send your
name, address, phone number and email (please include the
names and ages of the people in your household) to: spoling@
lcooa.org or mail to 508 Dickson Street, Wellington, Ohio
44090. Questions please call Sarah Poling at (440) 647-0777.
