Pumpkins, corn mazes, farmer's markets & all the colors of Autumn come to Ohio

Hook's Greenhouse had a large selection of mums and other Red Wagon Farm, on Rt. 252 in Columbia Station, has a large Bring the kids to your favorite pumpkin patch, like this one at the Red

store on Rt. 18 in Wellington for a larger selection. delicacies.
Say hello to Autumn in Ohio! It always seems to come too early for some and not soon enough for others. Whether you like it or not, cooler tempertures and shorter days are here to stay.
But there is no denying the beauty and splender that Autumn brings to Ohio in mid September into late October. Road trips are planned around the colorful landscapes when the trees
change from summer green to red, yellow, orange and every hue in between.
Another special thing about this time of year is the bountiful selection of late summer/early fall produce at local farms and farm markets. It may be a bit late for peaches this year, but I
have noticed some still have them. Honey is available all year round, but particularly fresh this time of year in many flavors. Corn is coming to an end by mid to late October, depending on
the type. Tomatoes, peppers, onions and other home grown products, along with pumpkins, gourds, corn stalks for decorating and much more are in abundance at your favorite farm market.
Buy corn now and cook it, scrape the kernels off the cobs and freeze it for your Thankgiving meal. Can your tomatoes for winter favorites like spaghetti sauce and salsa. My grandma
used to can peaches for eating and baking and make applesauce from local apples.
If you have never shopped at a local farm or farmer’s market, you are missing out on some of the best home grown produce, flowers, and fall decor available in the county. Just to men-
tion a few in Lorain County that advertise in our newspaper are: Hook’s Greenhouse on Rt. 18 in Wellington; Red Wagon Farm on Rt. 252 in Columbia Station; J&J Greenhouse on Folley
Rd., in Columbia Station; Beriswill Farm Market on Station Rd., south of Rt. 303, in Valley City; Albert's Fresh Market on N. Main Street, in Grafton; and Brasee's Corn Maze & Pumpkin
Patch on Rt. 58 in Wellington. Please shop your local farm markets and other businesses this year for all your holiday needs. Story and photos by Randi MacWilliams (Staff Writer).

Delicious soup perfect for the season

Cooler weather arrives just as prime entertaining season heats up. Those who
will be hosting gatherings soon can expand their recipe repertoire to feed guests
and keep them satisfied. Borrowing some flavors from the season can make enter-
taining festive and even more flavorful.
Pumpkins and winter squashes are popular in fall, and their versatility undoubt-
edly contributes to that popularity. However, when chilly days require something
to warm you up from the inside out, nothing can beat a soothing soup. And soup
recipes can be altered to easily feed a crowd.
Cooks can step out of their chicken soup comfort zones and try this recipe for

6 tips for taking stunning fall

photos

Exploring the great outdoors is a rewarding way to
bear witness to the majesty of nature. Nature fre-
quently presents awe-inspiring vistas that can take
individuals' breath away. Some nature lovers are
content to bask in the moment and set the scene to
memory. Others may want a more permanent way to
commemorate the view.
Amateur photographers eager to capture the majes-
ty of the great outdoors can practice their picture-tak-
ing skills. According to the photography tips and
technique experts at Picture Correct, many factors are
involved in taking nature photographs. These tips can
help anyone take stunning nature photos.
· Invest in quality gear. The right photography gear
makes it much easier to take great photos. Lenses are
very important for capturing shots. Macro lenses are
designed for insects and flowers. Wide-angle lenses
help snap landscapes. Telephoto lenses can focus on
animals without having to get too close.
· Take the foreground into consideration. When
you find an inspiring landscape to photograph, skip
the empty landscapes and think about zeroing in on
something interesting in the foreground. This can be a
particularly attractive flower in front of a vast field, or
even a rusty watering can left out in a row of crops.
www.jmcarpentryltd.com • Fredericksburg, Ohio 44627 Items in the foreground impart interest in the photo.

RURAL-URBAN RECORD, September 25, 2023 Page 17
Fall Home & Garden

· Consider depth of field. Sometimes you will have
no control over the busy background an interesting
subject is in front of in a planned photograph. A shal-
low depth of field achieved with a wide aperture can
blur a background and separate the subject from that
background, according to Shotkit, a photography and
gear authority. Some post-production work also can
be done to blur backgrounds in apps like Lightroom
or through Photoshop.
· Zoom in and crop subjects. Smaller pictures can
be just as compelling as larger ones. Zoom in on the
bark on a tree, the details of a leaf or the wings of an
insect. Closer looks at what is hiding in plain sight in
nature can lead to compelling pictures. Zoom in and
think about a macro lens, which will magnify even
the tiniest details. ® ® ® ® ® ® ® ®
