thousands of amateur radio operators (also known as ham radio
operators) throughout the United States and Canada participate Your Westside Leader in Dermatology Services
by setting up and operating ham radio equipment and antennas
in locations that are not everyday station locations and powering • Adult and pediatric
this equipment using emergency power sources such as battery, patients welcome
generator or solar cells. Others participate by operating from mo-
bile stations or from emergency operating centers sponsored by
their local clubs. Still others, many using some form of emergen-
cy power, participate from their homes.
The primary purpose of this event is to familiarize and pro-
vide amateur radio operators with the experience of quickly set-
ting up and then operating amateur radio equipment should that
become necessary in the event of a natural disaster or emergency,
such as has been done in recent years following hurricanes and
earthquakes. But the event also provides for a lot of fun, friendly
competition and increased activity in the ham radio community
as participating stations all over the US and Canada contact each
other during the event. For many ham radio clubs it is the high-
light of the year.
Field participants had 24 hours to set up their antennas and
equipment, followed by another 24 hours of operation. During
the operating period their objective was to contact as many dif-
ferent amateur radio stations as possible. As each station was
contacted call signs, class of operation and ARRL section (usu-
ally state/province) were exchanged. The exchanged information
was carefully logged and submitted to the ARRL. There are vari-
ous classes of entry based on the number of transmitters in oper-
ation, the number of operators and transmitter power level. The
ARRL will examine all entries and compile the results in their
monthly periodical QST magazine. Each station that participat-
ed will be listed along with the ?nal score it achieved.
One of the many local hams participating was Bob Hayes of
North Ridgeville. Using his callsign KW8N he participated in
the 1 transmitter with emergency power from a regular station lo-
cation class. Powered by batteries and solar cells and using only
5 watts of transmitter, he made a total of 1129 different radio
contacts (1074 using Morse code and 55 using voice) primarily
in North America, but including some in South America, Europe
and the Paci?c, which computes to a ?nal score of 11,565.

and Prevention, there are no safe lead levels in children. How-
ever, lead poisoning can be prevented; which is why the Lorain
County General Health District (LCGHD) educates families and
