History erased in downtown Grafton
Grafton residents wished
it was just an April Fool’s
trick when fire consumed
two historic buildings
downtown on Monday,
April 1. Many could only
watch as members of elev-
en area fire departments
came quickly to help Graf-
ton firefighters put out the
blaze around 8:45 a.m. at
216 Fusion, located at 931
Main Street. The build-
ings downtown are in close
proximity of each other and
fire fighters were concerned
the fire could spread quick-
ly to neighboring buildings
along the entire street. The
building at 931 Main Street
collapsed and a portion of
the burning structure leaned
against the Allstate Insur-
ance Agency building next
door at 927 Main Street.
The brick building suffered
significant structural dam-
age, but a sprinkler system
and action by firefighters
kept the fire from spreading
further into the building.
The fire also spread to the
neighboring building on the
other side, 935 Main Street,
which housed the local
iconic Lu’s Pizza for more
than 40 years. The build-
ing housing Lu’s Pizza was
structurally unsafe when
the fire was extinguished.
Equipment was brought to
the site late in the afternoon
to bring the remains of the
building completely down.
Smoke and water also did
some damage to the build-
ing next to the pizza shop,
formerly known as Bob’s
Barbershop. The building
was recently renovated for
Kryszak & Associates, Co.,
LPA attorneys, who were
set to move into the office
space.

the downtown area at times,
