8 girls will be competing in this year’s Elyria Apple Festival’s Princess Pageant,
themed “Apple Cheerleaders”. This is the 37th year for the festival and the pag-
eant, led by Linda Brown. The event will take place on Saturday, September 16,
2017 at 12:30p.m. on Ely Square in downtown Elyria.
The Elyria Apple Queen is awarded cash and prizes donated from local busi-
nesses and organizations. These prizes are valued at over $3,000. In addition,
awards and prizes are given to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Runners’ Up as well as
Most Creative Costume and Miss Congeniality. Miss Congeniality is selected by
her peer contestants at the last practice before the pageant. The Queen will be
crowned by the 2016 Apple Queen, Emme Wysocki.
Contestants are judged on creative apple themed costume, poise, personality,
appearance, conversational aptitude and group talent. Prior to the stage presen-
tation of the pageant, each contestant meets with the panel of judges for a formal
interview the morning of the event.
The Emcee for the day will be Matt Lundy accompanied by musician, Keith Ran-
som. The 2017 escorts will be Staff Sergeant Luke Jamison and Sergeant James
Humes of The United States Army Elyria Recruiting Of?ce.
These girls have put in many hours of hard work and dedication to participate in
the pageant and always leave with many new friends and an increased pride for
the City of Elyria. This experience gives them memories they will never forget. If
you are interested in participating in the 2018 pageant, visit www.elyriaapplefesti-

Apple
Origins
Through the years, the
image of apples and
classrooms have become
synonymous, as has the
idea of giving a teacher
an apple as a gift. There
is debate as to the origins
of this tradition, but many
sources have traced this
practice back to the 19th
century. School teachers
in little farm towns were
often paid in kind: sacks
of potatoes, apples and
so forth. Some think the
practice originated as
a simple gift of food for
poorly paid teachers. Ap-
ples still remain a popular
treat for teachers in the
United States, Denmark
and Sweden.
