1.0 INTRODUCTION
1.1 Definition term of
1.1.1 Internet
In the context of universalization, the internet has become listed in our
necessities. What is the internet? Internet is a short form of Interconnected
Network of all the Web Servers Worldwide which is also called the World Wide
Web (JavaPoint). The Internet may be described simply as "the network of
networks." It is the joining of computer networks from all around the world into
a single entity. It is not a single large computer, but rather a collection of
networked computers linked together. Based on an analysis, the internet is a
global computer network providing a variety of information and communication
facilities, consisting of interconnected networks using standardized
communication protocols (Oxford English Dictionary). According to research,
the internet is a massive network of interconnected devices that allows people
to share information, visit websites, and communicate with each other using
the platforms that were provided (Cambridge Dictionary).
1.1.2 Society
In this era of humankind civilization, people are not going to get away from
interacting with one another for a particular reason. By that, a society is formed.
What is society? Based on a study, a society is a wide selection of people who
live in a structured manner, making decisions about how to do things and
sharing the work that needs to be done. All the people in a country, or several
similar countries, can be referred to as a society (Cambridge Dictionary).
According to an analysis, the essential meaning of society is people in general
thought of as living together in organized communities with shared laws,
traditions, and values (Encyclopædia Britannica Company).

2.1 History of
2.1.1 Internet
Figure 1 shows the internet history timeline.
Who invented the Internet? The Internet, unlike innovations like the light bulb
or the telephone, does not have a single "inventor." Rather, it has progressed. The
invention of the Internet can hardly be attributed to a single person. Hundreds of
pioneering scientists, programmers, and engineers worked on the Internet, each
developing new features and technologies that finally came together to produce the
"information superhighway" we know today. The Internet originated in the United
States more than 50 years ago, in the 1960s, as a way for government researchers to
share information.
ARPANET, the Advanced Research Projects Agency Network, created the first
functional prototype of the Internet in the late 1960s. After scientists Robert Kahn and
Vinton Cerf invented the Transmission Control Protocol and the Internet Protocol, or
TCP/IP, a communications architecture that defined procedures for delivering data
between different networks in the 1970s, the technology continued to advance. In
1990, computer scientist Tim Berners-Lee created the World Wide Web, which gave
the online world a widely known structure. The Web was a key step in the creation of
the wide array of information that most of us now access daily, and it helped popularise
the Internet to the public. (History.com Editors, 2019).

2.1.2 Society
The word "society" comes from the Latin word "Socius," which means
"companion," "community," or "partnership." It's because man is always in the
company of other people. In research from Lamoureux (2009), human society's history
may have begun as recently as 7,000 years ago when humankind first began to use
agriculture as a main source of food and began to create huge, permanent
communities.
According to new research, The Science Society history is the world's biggest
society committed to studying science, technology, medicine, and their
interconnections with society from a historical perspective. It is the oldest such society,
having been founded in 1924. Through its publications and other activities, the society
presents historical views on science, policy, and the potentials, accomplishments, and
limits of fundamental and applied science to researchers, decision-makers, and the
public. (History of Science Society, 2021).
However, in sociology, society does not refer to a collection of individuals, but
to the complex pattern of rules, engagement, and connections that emerge among
them. Society, on the other hand, refers to the sophisticated web of social interactions
that links every entity to his or her peers. As a result, society takes on an abstract
rather than a tangible quality. We won't be able to touch it, but we will be able to fill it.
Because civilization is made up entirely of citizens' thoughts. Different social processes
such as mutual co-operation, competitiveness, and conflict occur in society when more
than one individual lives together and develops mutual relationships. Society is formed
by the ties formed around them. Between parents and children, brothers and sisters,
there is a bloodline (Mondal, 2013).

3.0 IMPACTS OF THE INTERNET TOWARDS SOCIETY
3.1 Positive Impacts of the Internet towards Society
The Internet is the greatest invention of the 20th Century because it changed the
course of humanity. It has had a positive influence on all of us. Internet services have enabled
us to achieve the inconceivable. The internet's accessibility and availability of information have
drastically impacted the globe, transforming it into a global village.
3.1.1 Connectivity
The Internet has improved communications, making it undemanding and
convenient that it enables us to communicate with people globally from the urban area
to even the most remote places or rural areas on earth. It is reasonable and affordable
because the cost that we will be charged is to pay the Internet Service Provider (ISP).
People can get in touch with one another throughout the entire world, whether they are
in the same country or international using communication applications. In addition,
most of the communication applications not only provide the chatting service, but also
the video call service so that we can look at each other’s faces as we talk. For
instance, WhatsApp, Telegram, Twitter, Instagram, and others. Some people may
construct up a virtual office by working from home if they have access to the internet.
There may be a condition for any company to enable its workers to work from home
using their computers at reasonable hours. In this situation, the Internet connects all
personnel, allowing them to interact and analyze any project with one another.
3.1.2 Education
As a university student, I personally think that the Internet plays a crucial role
in education be it for university, high school, or middle school students. I honestly
cannot imagine how my education would look like without the Internet. It is now
commonplace to use the Internet to conduct research and acquire information for
homework, assignments, and office presentations. Students may simply attend their
online classes by using the internet, and whether it's reading e-books from the online
libraries, academic papers, or even exchanging media, it's all achievable through the
Internet. The Internet offers better education opportunities and skill development and
helps increase literacy levels. For example, the QuillBot AI website is a paraphrasing
tool that helps millions of people rewrite and enhance any sentence, paragraph, or
article using state-of-the-art AI. Another example is the Grammarly website cloud-
based writing assistant that reviews spelling, grammar, punctuation, clarity,
engagement, and delivery mistakes.

3.1.3 Information
As we all be familiar with, the Internet has turned into the main source of
information as it contains countless of information. In order to get about the information,
we just have to use the search engines such as Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox,
Microsoft Edge, and so forth. This has drastically transformed the worlds of research,
technology, and education by allowing users to learn about nearly anything with a
single mouse click. The Internet also keeps us up to date on the newest advancements
in health, illness, and other fields of study. The usage of the Internet in the medical
industry has expanded accurate disease monitoring by tracking epidemic outbursts
and treating chronic sickness, hence enhancing general public health.
3.1.4 Financial Transaction
With the emergence of e-commerce, the Internet radically transformed the
retail business in our lives. The Internet enables individuals to find and purchase
products without having to go to a store because of the existence of online shopping.
We can now buy almost everything we need with the click of a mouse, whether it is
food, apparel, furniture, hardware, tools, gadgets, or books. It may all be shipped
straight to our home in a matter of days. Some of the well-known online shopping
platforms or e-commerce companies are Shopee, Lazada, Zalora, Carousell, Amazon,
eBay, and many more. People no longer have to wait in the queue to pay their bills,
buy postage, or deal with leaking envelopes. By hitting the button, one may
conveniently pay off debts such as vehicle loans. We could even receive bills by email
and be notified when they are sent.
3.1.5 Entertainment
Modern civilization has always included some form of entertainment. The
entertainment and show business industries have gained new heights thanks to the
Internet, with sports, films, music, theatre, and other types of entertainment all
becoming more accessible. People may broadcast their favourite shows from
anywhere in the world using the Internet as a resource. The days of renting DVDs and
buying any movie you wish to see are long gone. Watching movies has gotten much
convenient because of the advent of online video streaming services such as Netflix,
Disney, YouTube, iQiyi, and many more.

3.2 Negative Impacts of the Internet towards Society
We cannot dispute that the internet is a constant demand for us. From playing a game
of cards to checking the weather, we rely on the internet for everything. It has a significant
impact on our way of life. With the internet's invasion, life is surely growing more comfortable
and speedier because everything is just a click away. However, with all of its virtues and
pleasant features, the internet has a dark and sinister side too. We must also be aware of
some of the Internet’s drawbacks.
3.2.1 Internet Addiction
Some people spend a ridiculous amount of time online, which has an impact
on their social engagements. Although staying at home and having everything they
need will be delivered to their doorstep is a superb advantage of the Internet, it
completely isolates them from the outside world. A person who is addicted to the
Internet may spend his or her valuable time on the Internet rather than doing anything
beneficial. As a result, anyone who is hooked on accessing the Web might have a
negative impact on career productivity.
3.2.2 Health Problems
As a university student myself, I frequently do assignments until late at night
and only use the dimmed study desk lamp. Since we need to use the internet for work,
our eyes are constantly exposed to a computer screen or a mobile device that emits
light. As a result, over a prolonged time of internet usage, we may get eye-related
issues. In addition, teenagers and young adults who spend too many hours or even
days locked indoors in front of the computer can lead to obesity, backaches, carpal
tunnel syndrome, poor posture, and might experience various mental health issues. It
leads to an unhealthy lifestyle that lacks muscular activity as only sitting at a computer
for long durations has negative health consequences. In certain conditions, extreme
cases such as social anxiety, psychosis, and even depression are not impossible to
occur.
3.2.3 Cybercrime
With so much information publicly available on the internet, identity theft and
misuse are a definite possibility. There has been a spike in cybercrime since the
internet's inception. It is a crime that can be committed through the internet network. It
poses a threat to an individual's safety, national security, or banking. Cybercriminals
undertake internet scams and steal a person's personal information. Hacking,
scamming, infecting a computer with viruses, stealing identity, and stealing personal
Page | 8
INTERNET AND SOCIETY IMC402
data are just a few examples of cybercrimes. A hacker is a type of cybercriminal. A
hacker targets the most accessible computer network and steals the victim's personal
information. Due to cybercrime, we have seen several financial scams in which the
hacker wipes away all of the money in the bank account. Moreover, they are harmful
software that causes chaos on the web. They assault a computer intending to harm it
and cause it to malfunction. This can be quite expensive, especially if crucial data is
lost.
3.2.4 Child Security
The Internet may also have a harmful influence on children. Even with parental
restrictions in place, young children can be exposed to a lot of material on the Internet
that is not appropriate for their developing minds. Pornography and other age-
inappropriate content can be found on the internet. Unfortunately, children may obtain
such relevant data. Although parents can block hazardous websites to keep their
children safe, children can still access the internet through other devices. They are too
young to understand what right or wrong information is.
3.2.5 Information Overload
Millions of individuals can be connected via the Internet. It may deliver false or
inaccurate information which may be the reason for panic and disruption. The
dissemination of undesired material on the internet wastes a lot of time and money in
terms of finding useful information, and individuals can easily be misled. Many
governments and online media platforms have gone the extra mile to verify facts before
posting them online in order to avoid spreading misleading information and causing
unneeded complications. Nonetheless, the false information would still be around
spread by the third parties.

4.0 CONCLUSION
In today's globalized society, the internet has grown more prevalent than television and
radio. It includes uncommon information and instances that were previously unavailable. The
Internet's importance is felt not only in the scope of communication but also in every aspect of
life. The Internet has evolved to the point that anybody, from anywhere, may access any
information. There are no longer any geographical barriers because Internet communication
technology has eliminated them all. As we live in the modern civilization where information is
just at our fingertips, we should know what is good and harmful for us on the Internet so that
we can stay away from anything that might harm us in any manner. As a result, we should
utilize the internet with caution. We must not allow the internet to take over our life. We should
spend quality time with our families and participate in outdoor activities. There is no such thing
as too much of anything when it comes to maintaining a healthy mind and spirit.
