ONLINE DATABASE IMC406

PREFACE

One of the most essential aspects of the Library Skills subject in the Bachelor of
Information Science is the online database. Our lecturer for IMC406, Library Skills of IM1H,
Madam Kasmarini Binti Baharuddin at UiTM Campus Puncak Perdana assigned this project.
It's the part of an investigation or research when you learn how to use tools like surveys to
search a library database. The purpose of this project is to help information students become
the best future information professionals they can be.

ABSTRACT

The objective of this project is to assist students to demonstrate a step-by-step strategy
for searching an online library database. Several online databases are available through the
PTAR portal. However, we've picked two online databases to show each aspect of the
database search. This assignment focused on the online databases Medline Complete and
Emerald Insight, and we discussed both databases in depth.

SEARCHING TECHNIQUES

Our lecturer encouraged us to use the searching techniques to find an article on the
global issue in the Online Database. Finding the correct article will not happen by chance.
Some databases function in a somewhat different manner than others. The strategies listed
below may assist to enhance things in most databases. There are four variety of searching
techniques available to seek the article, as shown below:

1. Basic searching

2. Wildcard searching

3. Truncation searching

4. Boolean searching

P a g e 4 | 44

ONLINE DATABASE IMC406

INTRODUCTION BOOLEAN SEARCHING

Boolean Operators are simple phrases like "AND," "OR," and "NOT" that are used
as conjunctions in searches to combine or exclude keywords, resulting in more focused and
productive results. This should save time and effort by removing irrelevant hits that would
otherwise have to be scanned before being discarded. These operators can drastically reduce
or increase the number of records returned. Boolean operators can help save time by focusing
the search for more on-target results that are more relevant to the needs while excluding
irrelevant or unsuitable results. Each search engine or database collection handles Boolean
operators differently, and some may need the operator to be entered in capital letters or with
unique punctuation. The exact phrasing can be discovered in either the guide to the specific
database located in Research Resources or the help screens of the search engine.

i. “And”

To be included in the final collection, an item must match both of the standards specified
to obtain the specific information. It's a mash-up of numerous ideas. Each of the items
returned must include both terms. If one phrase appears in the document but the other
does not, the item is excluded from the list.

Example: “Stock market” AND “Trading”
“Parliment” AND “Government”

P a g e 5 | 44

ONLINE DATABASE IMC406

ii. “Or”

Connecting terms using OR retrieves items that contains one term, the other or both terms.
OR expands and broadens your search by connecting two or more synonyms. You will get
more result. For example, will return any results containing the word tourism, or travel, but
not necessarily both.

For example: “Tourism” OR “Travel”
“College” OR “University”

P a g e 6 | 44

ONLINE DATABASE IMC406

iii. “Not”

“NOT” limits your search by excluding defined keywords and/or phrases from your results.
NOT narrow a search by finding one search term and not the other. For example, if you
wanted to search for programming but are not ICT, anything contains the word ICT will not
appear in your search results.

For example: “Programming” NOT “ICT”

P a g e 7 | 44

ONLINE DATABASE IMC406

INTRODUCTION WILDCARD SEARCHING

Wildcards are special characters that can be used to replace unknown characters in a text
value. They're useful for finding several objects that have similar but not identical data.
Wildcards can also aid in the retrieval of data based on a pattern match. Middle truncation or
internal truncation are terms used to describe wildcard.

i. Percent (%)

Any number of characters, including letters, spaces, numbers, and punctuation, can be
represented by the % sign. For reference, if you want to find a specific individual and are
not sure if their last name is Richardson or Richardmond, you can type Rich% in the Last
Name column. The Search Results panel shows all people with surnames that start with
the letter R, such as Richards, Richardson, Richie, or Richardmond.

ii. Asterisk (*)
Any amount of characters will be matched. The asterisk (*) can be used anywhere in a
character string.
Example: to get words with American & British spelling;

Practi*e will retrieve practise and practice.
to get singular and plural;
M*n will retrieve man and men.

iii. Question marks (?)
Matches a single alphabet in a specific position.
Example: b?ll finds the ball, bell, and bill.

P a g e 8 | 44

ONLINE DATABASE IMC406

INTRODUCTION TRUNCATION SEARCHING

Truncation refers to shortening a word or removing certain characters from a lengthier term.
Symbols can be used at the end or in front of the root word. The symbols used to signify
truncation differ from one system to the next. The asterisk (*) is frequently used. Truncation
can occur to either the left or right.

Example: Psychol* is an example of right-hand truncation which will retrieve
psychology, psychological or psychologist.

L*chee* is an example of right–hand truncation which will retrieve, lichee,
lichees, lychee, or lychees.

*ment is an example of left-hand truncation which will retrieve management,
statement, fragment, refreshment, or ornament.

ONLINE DATABASE IMC406

INTRODUCTION ONLINE DATABASE

A database is a structured collection of information that can be readily accessed,
administered, and upgraded. Databases can contain a variety of content categories, including
bibliographies, full-text, numerical, and graphical data. An online database is a computer
application that is delivered from the Internet that stores and organizes data to make it
accessible to the user (Online-Database Meaning). It is hosted on websites which means that
access is supplied via a web browser. It is used for both professional and personal purposes.

Online databases can be free or require payment, with monthly subscriptions being the
most common method of payment. It contains articles, research papers, journals, conference
papers, proceedings, case files, and other material. Depending on the library's subscription
type, this material is provided in the form of complete texts or abstracts.

A database search will offer an abstract, or brief synopsis of an article, which will assist
us in determining whether to retrieve the entire text or not. As a result, we will use the Tengku
Abdul Rahman Library, commonly known as the PTAR Library, to select two online databases:

1. EBSCO: MEDLINE Complete
2. Emerald Insight

As attached below is the home page for Tengku Abdul Rahman Library (PTAR). It can be
