IN DETAIL. IT'S FUNNY PEOPLE ASSUME AND JUDGE BEFORE THEY KNOW OR SEE; I JUST
WISH THEY WOULD FLIP THE PAGES PAST THE COVER AND READ "THE BOOK OF ME" YOU
SEE HER MOTHER IS A DRUG ADDICT AND SO WAS HER FATHER; ACCORDING TO STATIS-
TICS THE BABY WOULDN'T BE SH*T SO WHY EVEN BOTHER. RAISED INTO CHAOS PART OF
HER FAMILY TREE; GRANDMOTHER HAD ELEVEN CHILDREN BUT ONLY TWO WERE DRUG
FREE. BUT IT'S NO WONDER CAUSE THERE MOTHER WAS THERE DEALER YOU SEE; SHE
THOUGHT INSTEAD OF GIVING YO MONEY TO THE DOPE MAN YOU CAN GIVE IT TO ME! SHE
EVEN HAD BABY GIRL WORKING, EXCHANGING MONEY AND DRUGS UNDER THE BAR DOOR;
NO DISHES, NO VACUUMING DELIVERING DRUGS WAS HER CHORE. A COLD THING FOR
CHILD TO SEE COMING HOME AFTER SCHOOL; GRANNY BUTT NAKE ROCKING COKE, NOW
SAY THAT SH*T AINT CRUEL. AND NOW THIS LITTLE GIRL IS EXPOSED TO A WHOLE WORLD
OF DRUGS;WHEN SHE SHOULD OF BEEN EXPOSED TO DREAMS,ASPIRATIONS,AND HUGS.
SHE'S BEEN MOVED AROUND FROM AUNT, TO GRANDMOTHER, TO ANOTHER AUNTY; THIS
LITTLE GIRL IS MOVING MORE THAN A DAMN SHIP IN THE SEA. WATCHING HER MOTHER
SHOOT UP WHILE HER COUSIN'S POP PILLS; THIS GIRL'S ONLY THIRTEEN , WITH A STRONG
MIND AND WILL. SHE'S MISSING HER DADDY, SO SHE CRIES HERSELF TO SLEEP AT NIGHT;
WONDERING WHEN , AND IF HER LIFE WILL EVER BE RIGHT. SHE'S CALLING HER AUNTY
MOMMA LOOKING FOR SOME KIND OF SALVATION; AND SPENDING TIME IN SAN BERNADINO
WAS WHAT SHE CALLED A VACATION. THE OTHER SIDE OF THE GAME WHAT A FAMILY
SHOULD BE; A WORKING AUNT, LOVING COUSIN'S, AND UNCLE WITH A DEGREE. LOVE AND
SUPPORT MAYBE THAT KEPT HER GROUNDED; A PEACE OF HOPE THAT HER LIFE WASN'T
AS BAD AS IT SOUNDED. WELL LOW AND BEHOLD THE LITTLE GIRL'S GROWING UP; SHE'S
FILLING OUT, LOOKING CUTE, AND GROWING INTO HER BUTT. BUT NOW HER INNOCENCE
AT STAKE CAUSE SHE'S BEING TOUCHED BY HER MOTHER'S COUSIN'S; NOT ONCE, NOT
TWICE, BUT MORE LIKE A DOZEN. INCEST, MOLESTATION, TO MAKE A LONG STORY SHORT;
BABY GIRL HID HER PAIN BY BEING INVOLVED IN A SPORT. SHE GRADUATED HAD A BABY,
NOW KEEP HER PAST IN MIND; PEER PRESSURE WAS THE WINNER IT WAS JUST HER FIRST
TIME. GROWING UP FAST IS WHAT SHE KNEW BEST; WAS THIS ANOTHER MISFORTUNE OR A
SPIRITUAL TEST. CONSTANT STRUGGLES SHE ENDURED IT SEEMED ONE AFTER ANOTHER;
SINGLE BLACK FEMALE AND DON'T FORGET, NOW A MOTHER. WORKING HARD IS WHAT SHE
DID TRYING TO FORGET ABOUT HER PAST; SHE FINDS A WAY TO JOKE ABOUT HER PAIN
MAKING OTHER'S LAUGH. ALL GROWN AND MATURE SHE FOUND HER PLACE IN THIS
WORLD; NO LONGER A VICTIM BUT A SURVIVOR IS THIS LITTLE GIRL. SHE FOUND REFUGE
THROUGH POETRY AND HELPING OTHER'S TOO; CAUSE I KNOW "THE BOOK OF ME" MAY AL-
SO BE THE BOOK OF YOU.

“The Gratitude in Taking A Knee”

Colin Kapernick set the NFL and media on fire by taking a knee on September 1, 2016. He
was booed for over 50 minutes by football fans on that day. Colin went on to be black-
balled out of the NFL, publicly ridiculed and judged by many of his football peers and
friends. All because he stood up for what He, as a man, believes in. It did not take for Ka-
pernick to be shot by police for him to speak up for the injustices we all are witnessing,
when it comes to racism in America. Colin Kapernick sacrificed everything to stand up
against the menacing violence the American Justice System continues to perpetuate
against Black Men/People of Color. Regardless of if you feel like Colin and the rest of the
NFL should kneel or stand, there is something to be said about a person having such a
strong belief, that they will take on an entire country. We often say, “if you do not stand for
something, you will fall for anything.” What Colin did on September 1, 2016 is what people
of color and our allies have done for hundreds of years: refused to bend or be quiet in the
face of oppression. Colin gave this generation official permission to start giving a damn
about ourselves and our place in this world, even if no one else sees our value. We know
our value and will gladly “take a knee” to fight for what rightfully belongs to all humans:
“life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” I encourage each of us to reflect on our own
beliefs and what is within your own life that you may need to take a “Kapernick Knee” to.
