COMMUNITY AWARENESS
IN HONOR OF BLACK HISTORY MONTH

Jan Ernst Matzeliger

(September 15, 1852 – August 24, 1889)

He was an American/Dutch and Surinamese inventor in the shoe industry. Matzeliger was
born in Paramaribo (then Dutch Guyana, now Suriname). His father was a Dutch engineer
and his mother black Surinamese slave. He had some interest in mechanics in his native
country, but his efforts at inventing a shoe-lasting machine began in the United States af-
ter a life of working in a machinery shop. He settled in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania at 19 af-
ter working as a sailor. By 1877 he spoke adequate English and had moved to Massachu-
setts. After five years of work he patented his invention in 1883. His machine would speed
up the production of shoes considerably. Previously, working by hand, one could produce
50 pairs of shoes a day, but his machine could produce between 150 to 700 pairs of shoes
a day. His shoe-lasting machine also cut the shoe prices across the nation in half. Despite
that, a combination of early death in Lynn, Massachusetts from tuberculosis and other fac-
tors, meant he never saw the full profit of his invention. In recognition of his accomplish-
ment he was honored on a postage stamp on September 15, 1991.

A phrase that floats around Greek life and is the mantra of those seeking unity is:
“No Matter The Letter, We Are All Greek Together.”

This could not be truer. We may be in different organizations, participate in different activities,
have different charities, and have different people joining our organizations—but at the end of the
day we are all Greek and we are all aiming toward the same things. Whether it be creating sisterly/
brotherly bonds or raising awareness and money for our charities; we are doing the exact same
things but we just have different ways of going about it.
Two years ago, The Gazette launched to shine a light on LGBTQA Greek letter organizations and
did so with flourish. Since its debut, The Gazette has extended the hand of unity and lived the man-
tra “No Matter The Letter, We Are All Greek Together.”
Greek unity should be about lifting up all of the organizations and their members to be the best. It
should be about living by meaningful values, bonding with your peers, and doing important philan-
thropic work during the most transformative years of a person's life. The Gazette continually
demonstrates this by providing an open medium that showcases the best of LGBTQA Greek life.
I'll wrap it up with a quote by Ernest Hemingway, “There is nothing noble in being superior to your
fellow man; true nobility is being superior to your former self.” The Gazette expressions us this
with each issue.

GZRFI Gazette has provided a much-needed national forum for LGBT Inclusive Greek and Social
Service Organizations. It honors LGBT Greek identity by portraying the LGBT lifestyle, refuting
stereotypes, and inspiring readers to overcome barriers to success. Its contents is centered on
Greek History, Entertainment, Small business Ownership, Health, Greek Unity, and Community
Service. By highlighting the accomplishments of our community, the newsletters offers its read-
ers new measurements of Greek success. It has earned a strong national reputation for its cele-
bration of Greek identity and culture. GZRFI Gazette continues to inspire an appreciation of the
LGBT heritage and commemorates and encourages LGBT Greek contributions to American socie-
ty.

As a organization, Nu Phi Zeta Fraternity, Inc., always endeavors to make a difference in the
world through our leadership, community service and programmatic offerings. Sequentially,
there are several ways in which the GZFI Gazette impacts non-collegiate LGBT Greek
community. Primarily, the Gazette is a launching pad for community connections and
collaborations. Most if not all non-collegiate greek organizations share one thing in common; we
do not not always know what each other is doing. The Gazette facilitates a space for information
sharing so that we are able to support each other in presence and with resources. This permits
non-collegiate greek organizations a way for our missions to collide with collective synergy to
make all of our work meaningful and full of purpose for our world.

Secondly, the Gazette is a place for our socialization. Every group of people need a outlet to find
the latest updates and information and the Gazette’s impact on current events and perspectives
on what is happening in our world give us the ability to see how our individual and collective la-
bors can make the world a better place. The Gazette gives our work a sense of purpose and in-
tentionality. We all talk about being how we are different void of spending much time on how we
are alike. We are different in that we represent different groups but we are alike in that we all
want to make the world a better place. The Gazette allows us to see how we can do that by shar-
ing real stories and relevant perspectives. Because our communities are affected by a multiplici-
ty of vicissitudes we can know that we are making real impacts as the Gazette records what is
happening around us. Further, we gain a continued sense of purpose to our work so that we re-
main relevant in a real world that is every growing; ever changing.

Lastly, as a hub for the appreciation and recording of LGBT heritage, the Gazette is a place
where the history of our organizations and stories can be told while valuing the importance of
our rich history. As a published medium, the Gazette can impact the way our history is told. In
his writings, systematic theologian and professor, Rev. Dr. Obey Hendricks offers these words
(in paraphrase): “When we change the narrative of history and tell it from the perspective of the
Lion versus that of the hunter, we allow shocking truths that will leave us with a sense of pur-
pose to pervade the earth.” This is what the Gazette does and can do to continue to impact our
realities; record our history from our eyes. As we celebrate your anniversary, we encourage to
continue to chart new paths and walk the road less traveled, remembering that we stand with
you and for you and command that continue you to let your light shine even in the darkest of
hours. It is our prayer and hope that you continue to do the work, knowing that your impact is
valued and celebrated. God speed!

Black Single Mothers and the Child Welfare System examines the struggles women of color face in working with the
child welfare system and how social workers who investigate childhood abuse and neglect can effect positive change.
This book addresses intersectionality and ideological, institutional, interpersonal, and internalized oppression and how it
affects the safety, permanence, and well-being of children. Through research and case examples, the reader will be im-
mersed in a historical perspective of oppression faced by black single mothers involved with social service systems, ex-
amine ways oppression plays out in child welfare supports and services, and discover new integrated methods of ad-
dressing oppression.
