Letter from the President and Chair
To Our Spark* SF Public Schools Community:
This has been a challenging year for all of us. Right as the year

in this fight together and our collective energy is more important
than ever right now. This annual report provides a snapshot of
our community’s support for the 2019-2020 year, one which was
unprecedented in public education and far beyond.

We appreciate Spark’s efforts and hard work to address the immediate and longer-
term needs of San Francisco’s most vulnerable residents who have and continue to be
impacted by COVID-19. In addition to posing public health challenges, this outbreak
strained resources and prompted mass closures of schools and businesses. Your
immediate response to address these challenges is truly what sets you apart.

SPARK INVESTMENTS
Initiatives & Priorities
Spark* SF Public Schools was created in 2015 to activate private philanthropy and
invest in the big changes needed to make Vision 2025 a reality. Spark* leverages private
philanthropic support to pilot new programs, scale proven practices, and invest in high-
need areas across the district, all in service of driving innovation and achieving equity
across San Francisco’s public school system.
Since 2018, Spark* has focused on district priorities that are helping to improve
outcomes for SFUSD’s 54,000 PK-12 students. These priorities include Career
Pathways, STEM Initiatives, the African American Achievement and Leadership
Initiative (AAALI), PITCH, Initiate Wonder, and Educator Pipeline Programs.
19
Spark Learning
Career Pathways
SFUSD’s Career Pathways program provides opportunities for high school students to
explore and access high-wage, high-demand careers while also preparing for post-
secondary education. Through experiences such as dual enrollment and work-based
learning like internships and job shadows, students are able to deepen their understanding
of the workplace while gaining both industry-related skills as well as “soft skills” like
collaboration, leadership, critical thinking, and networking. One of the key goals of Career
Pathways is to amplify the unique experiences, backgrounds and talents of our diverse youth
while also helping to build a more representative, diverse workforce in San Francisco.
Impact Over the past two years:
(2018-19 & 2019-20 school years)
2,240 students have completed an
internship or job shadow experience
1,831 students have completed a
career pathways program
20 764 career pathways students have earned college
credit through dual enrollment
Impact
50% Dramatic improvements in SY20 that include
SFUSD as the first large urban district to reach
50% proficiency for all students in math and
significant drops in the number of Algebra repeaters
(from 50% to 10%).
1/2 Before 2013, less than 1% of middle grades students
took a course in computer science; in SY20, nearly
half of these students have a substantial course in
this discipline.
3X Since 2013, the number of students enrolled in
Advanced Placement computer science has
tripled with a course enrollment that now reflects
our district wide race and gender demographics.
STEM Initiatives
Over the past seven years, one of the key foundational components of Salesforce’s support of Spark* 21
and SFUSD has been to improve math and science education for all students. This partnership has
led to the development and implementation of the nation’s first PreK-12 Computer Science curriculum
and the bold detracking of math classes to break down inequities. SFUSD’s STEM initiatives have
included robust professional development, such as training educators on the impactful use of
technology and coaching groups and individuals to dramatically improve how curriculum is delivered.

AAALI
68%
The African American Achievement and Leadership Initiative (AAALI) was founded 90%
five years ago to promote the success of African American students and families by
supporting academic and social-emotional learning, elevating effective practices and
strategies, and cultivating leaders in the work of deconstructing systemic barriers
to African American achievement. Spark* has worked closely with AAALI to support
targeted postsecondary programming, build tighter collaboration between students, parents,
and counselors, and provide more engaging learning opportunities and real-world career
exposure to the STEM field.
PITCH
In early 2018, SFUSD Superintendent Dr. Vincent Matthews announced a multi-year
initiative to close the achievement gap by cultivating five necessary conditions of a
high-quality learning environment: Professional capacity, Instructional guidance,
Transformative mindsets, Collaborative culture, and High-quality staff. Through
the PITCH initiative, a cohort of twenty schools were selected based on African American
student data across multiple years (performance, trends, and achievement gaps). Early
results have been promising, although SBAC data for 19-20 is unavailable due to shelter in
place requirements at the end of the school year.
22
The four-year trend for African
American graduation rates is overall
positive (76.8% in 2016-17 to 80.6% in
2019-20).
Over the past three school years,
more African American families have
reported feeling a sense of belonging
and school connectedness
The percentage of African American
students with a favorable growth
mindset grew from 58% to 68%

Spark Innovation
Initiate Wonder (Middle Grades Redesign)
The Middle Grades Redesign initiative was launched in 2015 in an effort to address
inequities in access to electives such as visual arts, dance, computer science,
health and foreign language for students in middle grades. After years of stakeholder
engagement, design thinking, and community input, SFUSD developed a clear vision
for deeper learning and is redesigning structures to provide universal access to electives,
incorporating personalized and project based learning, and standardizing teacher
collaboration at all middle schools. Now called Initiate Wonder, the redesign is being
implemented across middle schools, including two pilot schools during the 2019-2020
school year.
Impact In the 2019-2020 school year: 25
+30% there was a more than 30% increase in the availability of
electives such as the arts and world language in pilot
schools because of the systems changes underway
+30% there was a more than 30% increase in students accessing
Computer Science courses at one of the pilot schools
Spark Talent
Educator Pipeline Programs
SFUSD has designed and launched a portfolio of educator pipeline programs with the goal
of recruiting, training, and supporting a diverse pool of teachers and administrators
from a wide range of backgrounds who are prepared to excel in SFUSD classrooms and
schools. Through this work, the district aims to build a system that actively recruits aspiring
leaders of color into a workplace that is intentionally welcoming and nurturing and then
supports them to develop and thrive as they transform their schools to work for African
American and Latinx students, families, and educators.
Impact During the 2019-20 school year:
87% More than 100 educators were enrolled in teacher
pipeline programs, with 87% of teachers retained
in SFUSD
42% of new administrator hires identified as African
American or Latinx, moving the district closer to
26 its goal of a representative leadership

Let’s close the digital divide right now.
Digital learning is the new normal
There are many inequities in life. But few threaten an entire generation of
underserved San Franciscans like the digital divide in our public schools. Every
student without access to a computer, the internet, and the technology support they
need to use it is denied the opportunity to succeed. And low-income students are
the hardest hit by this inequity.
Even without the pandemic, the reality is that middle and high school students in
the 21st century must have a computer and internet service to fully participate in
public education. With the distance learning required by COVID-19, elementary
students and their families also need tech access and support.

In total, the district has distributed 34,500 laptops and 11,500 internet
hotspots to enable students to connect with their teachers and classmates
for distance learning. But there is still a great need for additional
devices, ongoing tech instruction and support for students and families,
language support for English learner students and their families, and
teacher training to ensure effective use of this technology.
SFUSD is partnering with Bay Area industry leaders, and others who
want to be agents of change during this pivotal moment, to put essential
technology in the hands of the kids who need it most.

The Stocker Foundation remains committed to closing
the education equity gap and making good educational
practices great by supporting kindergarten readiness and
ensuring students can read at or above grade-level by third
grade. Partnering with SPARK* SF Public Schools allows
us to positively impact the lives of San Francisco students
through Literacy + STEAM, an integrated grantmaking
approach that encourages teachers and students to
engage in experiential learning, embrace collaboration,
and work through the creative process.
