EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW
ET-Star invited Mr. Lemma Yadecha, A/MD
Ethiopian International Services, to discuss
the contribution that Ethiopian International
Services made during COVID-19. Mr.
Lemma briefly explained the recent Ethiopian
International Services status. Enjoy your
reading!
What is the current status of
Ethiopian International Services?
Ethiopian International Services is one of the
eight business units. It generates 80 to 85%
of the company’s revenue yearly. International
Services represents 112 Ethiopian Airlines
destinations.
The number of destinations that Ethiopian flies
vary from time to time. It often reaches over
or below 217 destinations. It indicates that
Ethiopian almost flies everywhere in the world
except Australia. We are studying the market
to start the flight operation to those remaining
areas. Of course, Ethiopian is in a better
strength to successfully increase its destinations.
Many other airlines have started reducing
their flight capacity during COVID-19. On
the other hand Ethiopian, has continued
flying to all destinations. We have only
reduced the flight frequency during this
pandemic time. For instance, we used to
have a flight schedule to Nairobi four or
five times a day before the pandemic. But
now, it has declined to only two flights a
day. COVID-19 brought us an opportunity
as well. We had a massive cargo operation
with enhanced capacity of 60% from
last year. I can definitely say, despite the
COVID-19 crises, we’re in good shape.
4
ET-Star
What challenges did you face
during COVID-19?
COVID-19 is a challenge for all. The first
challenge is that passengers lost their
confidence in traveling. Many of them fear
that they could get infected while traveling.
people have avoided non-essential travel.
Above all this, the biggest challenges we
are facing is that many countries have
declared flight restrictions and suspension
rules. Embassies do not provide a visa to
travel. These have created a massive impact
on our industry.
What should we expect from
Ethiopian International Services
in the near future?
Ethiopian has a proven track record of
flying high against all the odds. It has
disciplined and hard-working employees
and management members who stand the
test of time.
It has become a challenging year since July.
We have been working hard and making a
lot of decisions to cover all the expenses the
company has. We have shifted some of our
aircraft to the cargo business. to stay afloat.
until the vaccine is ready. IATA stated that
the recovery period might take five years.
But, we believe, with the strength and
commitment of our employees, Ethiopian
will recover in two years.
Message to employees
We should know that terrible things come
for the better. When this kind of stressful
situation appears, we create a better world
and a better airline. It gives us time to think
and help to plan. It also helps us to know
our strength and weakness and help us
develop our strength and make our airline
world class in achieving 5-star service with
4-star airline.

LEADERSHIP BRAVERY IN THE EYES OF THE STORM
By: Eskinder Alemayehu & Eskinder Kadir
Saturday and Grinning
We all have a favourite from fruits, flowers, colours, songs and favourite from days of the week. Sitting for a coffee
with friends, we discussed the unique features of Saturday. We tried to make a kind of analysis without drawing
any sort of mathematical graph and tried to conduct the discourse of 'Beloved Saturday' without referring to
any of the philosophical genres. We could not really tell what really made us act like a school kid when Saturday
arrives.
ቀበና’s Rendez-vous
As usual, we sat at Kebena's finest cafeteria inhaling edible air, discussing failure-success stories, secular -spiritual,
ups-downs, misery-ecstasy, temporal -eternal, life-death and almost everything is discussed under the sun.
Leadership changes Reality
One of my 'Literature graduate ' friend said, 'Oh ...' as if he remembered something and took his phone out. He
follows international media in consistent manner and comes with extra-ordinary- stories.
The title that he gave for today's piece is 'የእስኬው፡ መሪዎች' and we were all excited to hear from him what it
was all about. His story was about an interview conducted by Joanna Bailey with Ethiopian A/Chief Commercial
Officer, Mr Esayas Woldemariam .Joanna Bailey is a contributor to ‘Simple Flying’ and worked in publishing for
more than a decade and provided commentary for outlets including the BBC ,CNBC and other medias.
No Uncle Sam
The COVID-19 crisis has seen airlines all over the world crying out for support, as an unprecedented downturn
in travel demand swings every carrier to huge losses. Some airlines have secured record bailouts from their
governments, while those who haven’t are on the brink of collapse. To date, Ethiopian has received no bailout;
neither is it hopeful of getting this type of support.
Mr.Esayas said:
“Many of the European and American carriers have got a very rich Uncle Sam who is supplying them with these
funds. But for us, we do not have that kind of a luxury. So, we have to run for our own life.''
6
ET-Star
Tackling The Unprecedented
Mr.Esayas has made a very important remark, how Ethiopian sailed through the cyclone of COVID-19 crisis.
“So far, we have not pursued anything of the sort, because we’re getting by with cargo, with repatriation flights
and with reopening the passenger flights. We are making ends meet and getting by, we are paying all our
overhead costs and fixed costs and all our other commitments. “We have not defaulted on any payment so far.”
Number one is our agility. [Ethiopian is] not just an airline, it’s a complete aviator. We have a lot of strategic
business units like ground handling, catering, repair, maintenance and overhaul, our aviation academy, full cargo,
a full international passenger network … So when one line of business is failing, it is easy for us to switch to the
other because, by strategy, we have been well situated with a diversified business.”
Why Ethiopian?
When repatriation emerges, the early bird is catching the fat worm. The fact that we have been responding
quickly, and we have competitive prices, we have a high standard of hygiene and protection, which is stipulated
by CDC and World Health. So, all this put together has made us a better choice.
The Storm Has Passed/As view of ቀበና’s Rendez-vous /
Even though there is a huge task ahead of us, we are pretty much out of the swamp.Mr. Esayas's remark made
it clear how we have managed to defeat the uncertainty, doubt, fear of losing our livelihood and not be able to
bring bread on our kitchens table.
Witness of Joanna Bailey
Throughout the crisis, Ethiopian has been working hard and working smart. The airline is in an incredible position
to weather the crisis, without the need for the level of bailout we’ve seen in other companies.
Back To ቀበና’s Rendez-vous
Friends are now inviting me an insanely nice cup of coffee to mark the SUCCESS OF ETHIOPIAN AIRLINES
and ITS EXCEPTIONAL LEADERSHIP.

In the 2007 Ethiopian calendar, I got the

I served Ethiopian airlines for two &

Perks I enjoy the most
I get so many advantages and
opportunities working in Ethiopian
Airlines. As we all know, Ethiopian is
working on globalized world so as staff
inherits the work ethics and discipline,
culture and tackle challenges in a very
smart way. Exploring the world with
people from all walks of life by itself
lets you share different ideas and life

It is a big opportunity to secure an

Food for thought
Our day to day activities leave us with
instructive experiences. All we have to
do is learn from our mistakes and try our

as much as we can. Even if we feel like we

we want if we are determined and work
hard for it with the help of God.

HEALTH CORNER
Balance sheet of your life
Just like the BSC, ISC, and KPI to evaluate our performance at work, we have
different evaluating tools, indicators, and targets to evaluate our health status
regularly.
A healthy lifestyle is a great way to improve your health. The little choices you Dr. Saba Fikru
make every day, such as what you have for lunch or how you spend your evenings, Head Medical and Health Services
all affect your health and even how long you might live. Here are some health indicators that you can use when
evaluating your health status:
1. Body weight → Make sure you have the right weight for your height. Simple lifestyle changes can
help you achieve a healthy weight.
2. Blood pressure → Check your pressure once in 3 months if your pressure is normal. If you have high
blood pressure, follow your doctor’s advice for frequent & regular check.
3. Dietary habit → Eat wisely by choosing a balanced diet. Healthy food choices go a long way toward
good health. You can still eat your favorite foods but should be in moderate amount. Watch your fat,
salt & sugar intake.
4. Physical exercise → Exercise regularly, building it into your everyday activities. A 30 minutes of
moderate physical activity on most days of the week can make a big difference in your physical and
mental health.
5. Water intake → Drink plenty of water. What's enough? Your pee should be clear or slightly yellow.
6. Tobacco habit → Kick the tobacco habit if you are a smoker. If you don’t smoke, take steps to avoid
people who smoke.
7. Alcohol intake → Restrict your alcohol intake – or even abstain.
8. Safety → Take steps to protect yourself from various harms such as wearing seat belt when driving, to
avoid driving while under the influence of alcohol, avoiding crowded areas during pandemics (such as
COVID-19), getting health safety information from reliable sources are some examples.
9. Stress management → Take breaks regularly and de-stress yourself. Taking deep breaths helps to
de-stress. Try to maintain a positive attitude to cope with stress. Try some activities with friends or
family. You may meet for coffee or may walk together. Don’t overlook your mental health. Attitude
and stress can affect your physical health. Talk to your doctor if you need help managing stress.
10. Periodic checkup → If you have chronic illness (such as diabetes, hypertension, depression), follow
your treatment plan closely as your health depends on it. Have regular health check recommended for
your age including vaccines.
REMEMBER THAT;
Your knowledge is your investment, Your character is your capital and, Your bad habits are your liabilities.
You can prepare your health BSC and rate your health score. Have a nice balance sheet of life!

media. If our followers see we are being active and responsive, they are much
more likely to engage with us.
What is the current status of the page?
As of today, the Ethiopian Airlines Digital

GONDAR: THE CAMELOT OF AFRICA
Gondar, located in the Northern part of Ethiopia, is one of the major attractions in the Northern Historic Circuit.
It was the 17th century capital of Ethiopia and known for its remarkable collection of medieval castles and churches.
The city holds the remains of several royal castles, including those in Fasil Ghebbi (encircled by a 900-metre stone
wall), for which Gondar has been called the "Camelot of Africa". The castles were built by successive emperors
reigned between 1632 and 1855. These dramatic castles display richness in architecture that reveals the Axumite
traditions as well as the influence of Arabia. Gondar and its surrounding countryside constitute the homeland of
most Ethiopian Jews, before they were moved to Israel.
Other treasures of Gondar include the 18th century palace of Ras Beit, the bath of Fasilades, the ruined palace of
Qusquam, and the church of Debre Berhane Selassie with its unique murals. Gondar is the gateway town to the
Simien Mountains National Park . The Simien Mountains is one of the most beautiful natural landscapes in Africa,
and is dubbed ‘’The Roof of Africa’’.
Gondar is also known for its warm celebration of Timket ( Epiphany), which takes place in January. The old
swimming pool in the palace of Emperor Fasiladas is filled with water during this annual occasion where thousands
jump in the pool to commemorate Jesus's baptism in the river Jordan.

Leadership & Career Development Training School Dr. Zewdu H/Mariam
The Leadership & Career Development School was established as Manpower Head Leadership & Career
Development Program (MDP) with the main objective of training and Development Training
developing management personnel at different levels of the organization.
Since its establishment, the school has delivered different leadership and career
development trainings both to Ethiopian Airlines Group staff and third-party
customers including foreign airlines. It is one of the Five schools under Ethiopian
Aviation Academy Providing leadership training to the different levels of
management team and also functional trainings related to career development.
The school also provides English language proficiency trainings under its Language and Communication
Development Center (LCDC) which is also responsible to conduct aviation English proficiency rating for pilots
and cabin Crew and assessment of English language proficiency level of candidates joining the different schools
of the Academy.
The School has to-date given Leadership and career development trainings to over 60,000 employees out of
which 22,576 are third-party customers. The feedback that the school has been getting from third party trainees
that include government and non-government organizations, commercial banks and big private firms witness how
beneficial the trainings offered have been. The beneficiary’s continuous requests for various types of tailor-made
trainings affirm this fact.
Consistent with the Academy’s vison, the school is currently working on restructuring itself to start offering
management and system consultancy services leveraging on ET’s amassed tested and proven organization and
leadership success experience over several decades to external customers. Currently, it is generating a substantial
revenue from third party trainings. The training agreement that is about to be concluded with Commercial Bank
of Ethiopia and the international bid worth of about USD 50,000 that the school has won recently competing
with many international bidders to offer a “Train the Trainer” program in Customer Service to Ethiopian Electric
Utility clearly indicate how Ethiopian’s best practice in various fields is a marketable brand in big demand for sale.

AVIATION FACT
Why are planes painted white?
Planes are nearly always painted white. There are several reasons for
this:
• Heat reflection. If an aircraft is painted white, it
accumulates less heat. This is better for passengers and
economically profitable for airlines.
• White paint is less expensive. While paint is way
cheaper than other paint.
• Preventing collisions with birds. Birds can see the
reflection from white surfaces better and don’t often
collide with airplanes for this reason.
• White paint helps reveal even small cracks and dents.
White details are easily recognized in case of an accident
and it’s easier to notice damages.

ETHIOPIAN HISTORY
The Konso- Masters in Terrace Agriculture
The Konso are East Cushitic language speaking people living in a small rocky and barren Assefa Batu
hill of south-western Ethiopia. The dry-stone walled towns (Paleta) of the Konso are Senior Tour Operator
located on high hills selected for their strategic and defensive advantage. These towns
are circled by, between one and six rounds of dry-stone defensive walls. In order to enter
a Konso village, you must pass through a gate and a series of alleys. These paths are part
of its security system, keeping the village difficult to access.
The cultural spaces in the walled towns, called Mora retain an important and central role in the life of the Konso. The
tradition of erecting a generation marking stone called Daga-hela, quarried, transported and erected through a ritual
process makes them among the last of the megalithic people.
The Konso practice mixed agriculture. They use animal dung fertilizer to grow crops, and their most important crop is
sorghum. Grains, beans, cotton, corn and coffee are also grown by the Konso people.
The konso live in dry area as their land receives inadequate rainfall. Out of necessity for existence, they mastered
conserving their natural environment. They make walled terraces and fortified settlements. The terraces retain the soil
from erosion, collect maximum water and discharge the excess and create terrace saddles that are used for agriculture.
The terraces are the main features of the Konso landscape and the hills are contoured by the dry-stone terraces that
could reach at some places up to 5-meter high. This extraordinary terrace work is a witness of the struggle of man
to harness its environment. Their water reservoirs (Harda) are communally built in the landscape and maintained
culturally. In recognition of their conservation activity UNESCO inscribed the Konso cultural landscape as world
heritage site in 2011.
The labor needed to construct terraces must have necessitated a strong cohesion and unified bond among all the clans.
The social organization that enabled the work forces to execute the terrace construction and the indigenous engineering
knowledge applied have required certain work divisions which still exist in today's Konso traditional system.
The erection of stones and poles is part of the Konso tradition. The Konso erect stones/steles every 7 and 11 years to
commemorate and mark the transfer of responsibility from the older generation to the younger generation, and erect
generation trees (pole) to commemorate a full cycle generation transfer every 18 years. The age of a village can be
determined by how many poles are standing. Carved wooden statues are also used to mark the grave of a famous
Konso tribal member. Wooden anthropomorphic statue called waka, carved out of a hard wood, and mimicking the
deceased is erected as a grave marker. The marker is placed above the grave and smaller statues are then placed around
the larger one representing his wives and conquered enemies. In addition to this, they also erect man-hood stones called
Daga-Diruma on tombs.
The other fascinating place in Konso is the amazing rock formation called “New York” which looks like down town
tall complex buildings.

SAFETY CORNER
A Tale of Two Flying Wings: Birds vs. Aircrafts
Have you ever imagined that those small sized birds which we see in our everyday
life everywhere could be a cause for catastrophic aircraft accidents? not too many
people feel the same way. It’s something that most people can’t get even those who
are working in the airline industry.
Nevertheless, Bird strikes have been and continued to be a critical threat to the Yonas Embiale
aviation industry ever since the beginning of aviation. Many lives have been lost Sr. QMS & SMS Officer
as a result of bird strikes; On top of that, the material and financial damage on the
industry is immense and increasing from time to time costing more than 1.2 Billion
USD per annum. A bird strike is simply defined as a collision between a bird and an
aircraft which is in flight or on a take-off or landing roll.
Different ecological and socio-economic factors contribute a lot to the concentration of birds around airports and as a
result of the occurrence of bird strikes. Airports proximity to large water bodies, farmlands, unmanaged slaughterhouses
and illegal slaughtering activities, dense residential areas and poor waste management are the main factors that increased
the magnitude of the problem. Technological transformations in manufacturing of aircrafts also aggravates the problem as
the size, increased speed, and quietness of the emitted sound of aircrafts make aircraft vulnerable to bird strikes.
The majority of bird strikes occur at an altitude of below 1300m (4265ft) which implies that the largest share of
strikes happen at or in the vicinity of airports during take-off, initial climb, approach and landing phases.
The cost of a bird strike is directly related to the part of the aircraft damaged and the extent of the damage, which
is determined by the impact force created by the collision between the aircraft and bird. A precise impact-force
calculation includes impact speed, bird weight, density, dimensions and configuration, as well as angle of impact.
Expressed in an equation, impact force is proportional to bird mass and the square of impact speed. Nose, wings,
engines, fuselage, landing gear and windshield are the most struck parts of an aircraft by birds.
Birds vary from species to species in their behavior of response towards aircraft movement. Some species are
very adaptive to their surroundings and hence learned to stay out of aircraft path along the corridor. Whereas,
the majority of species behavioral response is very unpredictable and their movement is highly susceptible to
aircraft collision. Generally, birds that feed and loaf on airfields either ignore aircraft threats, avoid busy runways
in advance of approaching aircraft, or respond with fright or panic as aircraft approaches.
To overcome the issue of bird strikes, efforts have been made by different countries and aviation companies such
as applying chemical, biological and biotechnical controls with all its drawbacks. Despite these efforts, bird strike
problems have not been solved or minimized to an acceptable level.
Thus, it seems like the best and the most successful way to avoid birds at airports appeared to be to make airports
less attractive to birds by relentless habitat management activities at airports and its surrounding.
