በአስተዋይነቱ እና በምክር ለጋሽነቱ በወዳጅ ዘመዶቹ ሁሉ ይወደድ ነበር። የወጣትነት እድሜውን ሀገር እየተሻገረ ሲነግድ ስላሳለፈ፣በርካታ
የህይወት ልምዶችን ከሀብት እና ከንብረት በላይ አካብቷል።መፍትሔ ፈልገው ለሚቀርቡት ሁሉ ያለስስት እየጨለፈ እና እየሰፈረ በልክ
በልካቸዉ የሚሰጥ ባህረ-መፍትሄያቸው ነበር።

ከማለፉ በፊት በአንዱ ቀን ከወዳጆቹ አንዱ እንዲህ ሲል ጠጋ ብሎ ጠየቀው ፣’’አንት ጥበበኛ ሰው በህይወት ዘመናችን ሁሉ እያስታወስንህ
የምንጠቀምበት ትምህርት ስጠን። ’’ሰውየውም ትንሽ ካሰበ በኃላ ፣’’በህይወት ዘመንህ ሁላ የምትገለገልበትን ትምህርት እንድሰጥህ
የተወሰነ እድሜ-ጊዜ እፈልጋለሁ።ያሉኝን የከበሩ ንብረቶች ውሰድና ተጨማሪ ጊዜ ግዛልኝ።’’ ብሎ መለሰለት ። ጠያቂውም በመገረም
‘’የዚህን አለም ውድ ነገሮች ብንጠቀም ጊዜን መግዛት እንዴት ይቻላል?’’ ብሎ መለሰለት።

‘’አየህ!በማንኛውም ዋጋ መግዛት የማትችለው ነገር ቢኖር ጊዜ መሆኑን ካወቅክ በቂ ነው።ሀብት፣ክብር፣ስኬት እና ታላቅነት በጊዜ ውስጥ
የሚገኙ መልካም ፍሬዎች ናቸው።እነዚህ ሁሉ ተግባራዊ የሚሆኑት ጊዜ ሲኖርህ ብቻ ነው።ጊዜ ከሌለህ ይመክናሉ።የጊዜ ዋጋ ይበልጥ
የሚገባህ እንደእኔ ወድቀህ ስትቀር እና ነገን የማየት ተስፋህ በመነመነበት ሰአት ነውና ጤነኛ ሆነህ ዛሬ ላይ ስለደረስክ አመስግን።እድለኛ
ሆነህ የነገዋን ጠዋት ካየህ፣ምሬትህን እና ተቆጥረው የማያልቁ መከራዎችን መዘርዘር ትተህ አመስግነህ አዲሱን ቀን ተቀበል ።

ተጨማሪ ቀናቶች የሚሰጡህ ትላንት ያሰናከሉህን ፈተናዎች እየቆጠርክ ዛሬን እንደትላንት እንድትኖር ሳይሆን፣መሰናክሎቹን በጥበብ
አስወግደህ እንድታልፍ ነውና በጥንቃቄ እለፋቸው።ያለፉት ስህተቶች የምትማርባቸ እንጂ እለት-እለት እየመነዘርክ የምትገደብባቸው

ENKUTATASH-GIFT OF JEWELS

The epagomenal days, five or six extra days at the end of the year is a week of preparation for
Ethiopians who celebrate New Year (Enkutatash) on the 11th of September or on the 12th
during a leap year.

Enkutatash marks the advent of New Year in Ethiopia. According to popular legend, Queen Assefa Batu
of Sheba had presented unique gifts of spices and jewels to King Solomon during her visit to
Jerusalem. When she returned from her expensive journey, her chiefs greeted her with enku, Sr. Tour Operator ET- Holidays
jewels, to replenish her treasury. Enkutatash, meaning the “Gift of Jewels” has supposedly been
celebrated since the time of the Queen of Sheba.

As the Ethiopian counting of years begins in the year 8 of the Common Era-otherwise referred to as AD, there is seven
to eight years gap between the Ethiopian and the Gregorian calendars. This mainly results from an alternate calculation in
determining the date of the Annunciation to Virgin Mary. The Common Era (AD) follows the calculations of Dionysius, a
6th-century monk, while the non-Chalcedonian countries continued to use the calculations of Annius, a 5th-century monk,
which had placed the Annunciation of Christ exactly 8 years later. As a result, Ethiopia is either seven or eight years behind
the Gregorian calendar, depending on whether the date is before or after 1st January.

The Ethiopian calendar has twelve months of 30 days plus five or six epagomenal days, which comprise a thirteenth month.
The sixth epagomenal day is added every four years. The Ethiopian New Year is characterized by the end of the long rainy
season, a bright sky and dazzling sunlight. The countryside turns into gold with the yellow daisies (Adey Abeba) covering
the entire fields in rural areas of Ethiopia, which are in bloom at this time of the year.

The New Year eve celebration kicks off with the lighting of the bonfire. Male members of the family light a bonfire made
of branches and leaves of trees to say goodbye to the concluding year and wishing for a brighter year, peace, and prosperity
for the family and the country as a whole.

The festival is celebrated by rejoicing girls and Ethiopian New Year is manifested by
boys with New Year’s songs. Girls dressed in numerous attractive sceneries that see
traditional clothes sing New Year’s songs while off the departing old year and usher in

MESKEL FESTIVAL

Meskel celebration is a religious holiday held to commemorate the discovery of the True Cross upon which Jesus
was crucified. The legend goes that in the 4th century AD the Roman Empress Helena, mother of Constantine
the Great, received a vision in a dream where to find the cross. She ordered the people of Jerusalem to collect
wood, and the smoke from a huge bonfire indicated the location where the cross was buried. Meskel is celebrated
for two days beginning on September 26th.

The first day is Demera (September 26), the eve of Meskel in which bonfires are built topped by a cross on which
flowers are tied. The eve of Meskel is observed with great celebration and festivity with friends and family, the
Demera burns until it turns entirely into ashes. As it burns and collapses the direction where the Demera falls is
believed to predict the major events to happen in the year ahead.

The largest Meskel celebration takes place at Meskel square in Addis Ababa. The next day which is the actual
Meskel, people go to the spot of the Demera and use the ashes to mark their foreheads with the sign of the cross.
There is a lot to eat and drink as people celebrate together. One of the significant occurrences of the festival is
the coinciding with the mass blooming of Meskel flowers, the golden yellow daisies. During the leap year the
celebration takes place on September 27, otherwise it is celebrated on September 26.

In 2013, UNESCO has inscribed Meskel on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of
Humanity. Meskel celebration attracts hundreds of thousands of tourists to Ethiopia and it has become one of
the major boosts to the country’s tourism industry.

10 My Childhood: My name is Gelebo Kussia. I was
born and raised in a small town called Yabello. I
completed my elementary and high school there. I
joined Bahir Dar Poly Technic College and studied
for 3 years. After I got my advanced diploma, I joined
Ethiopian Tele Communications Corporation and
worked as a technician for a year and a half. After
that, I joined the Aviation Maintenance School
in 1996 GC. I have been working here in ET since
March 1997.

Remarkable and unforgettable experience as an
Aircraft Technician: I was junior and first assigned to
Hangar Maintenance. My first project was to open
up a 757 wing leading edge with one of the senior
Technician. I was very happy. I immediately started
referring to the manual and saw the panel where we
were going to assemble. Back then, we never had a
power gun instead use speed handle to open access
panels.

I started opening up the panels without any rest,
with no tea break. Everyone laughed at me. I finished
the job at 11:00am which was going to take the
whole day. I was so tired I couldn’t even move after
completing the task.

Best Technician for me: A best technician is the one
who performs/executes tasks by strictly following
procedures stipulated in the approved maintenance
documents without fail.

My advice to Junior Aircraft Technicians: Everyone
should love what they do. They should be interested.
When they come to work every day, they should feel
like they are going to contribute something to the
company.

My New Year wish: I wish the employee could bring
out the best in them in the coming year.

May the coming year be full of hope and change
for the employees.

Winglet Modification in Ethiopian MRO

Ethiopian Airlines started winglet modification of the first two B767-300(ET ALO & ET ALJ) aircrafts
in 2012.Likewise,ET MRO accomplished this heavy and complicated structural major alteration on ET-
ALP, This winglet modification project on Boeing 767 fleets, is the first in the African aviation.

Winglets are vertical extensions of aircraft wingtips that improve an aircraft’s fuel consumption efficiency,
payload lift, and cruising range. Designed as small aero foils, winglets reduce the aerodynamic drag associated
with vortices that develop at the wingtips as the airplane moves through the
air. By reducing wingtip drag, fuel consumption goes down and range
extends.

In the late 1970s, when the first B767 aircraft was
designed, the Winglet concept was not matured
enough for the implementation stage, and these
fleets practiced without any advancement.

According to the airline’s report and the
aviation studies, fitting aircraft winglets
will reduce fuel consumption per airplane
up to 500,000 gallons (~6.5%) yearly.
It also means a carbon dioxide (CO2)
emission reduction of up to 277,000
metric tons annually. This figure makes
installing blended winglets the greenest
innovation in the aviation industry.

Using the special winglets also extend
the airplane’s range by 360 nautical miles
(666 km) as well as increase the payload by
12,000 pounds (5450 kilograms). It enhances
aircraft’s takeoff performance levels without
any engine update.

Taking this wonderful aviation innovation into an
advantage, Winglet becomes into effect as a built-in
system during production in all youngest fleets such as B777
and B787.

The team of technicians and engineers are working day and night including their day-offs to finish the
project on time. Even though the aviation industry is being affected by the pandemic, it is creating an
opportunity and ample time to modify the aircraft. This is an achievement and fundamental milestone
particularly for Ethiopian Airlines and African aviation MRO.

staying home, practicing lockdown, vacationing,
or working continuously. But the measures that

Marshaling at ADD Hub

Marshaling is visual signal, radio communication and part of aircraft ground handling. It is dedicated on radio
communications (VHF) with Air Traffic Controller (ATC) and receives the Estimate Time of Arrival (ETA)
and disseminates ETA (Estimate Time of Arrival) to announcer and pre planning Aircraft parking positions for
landing traffics. Simultaneously inform the aircraft parking stands to ATC and other concerned bodies.

On the aerodrome (airside) the Marshaller signals communicate with the pilot for the direction of the aircraft
to park safely on proper parking position to turn, slow down, stop, and shut down the engines. It also leads
aircrafts by the Follow- me car to proceed to the VIP stand, taxiway and runway while the incoming and
outgoing time of the Aircraft.

Marshallers are also aerobridge operators which entail connecting Passenger Boarding Bridge (PBB) with
the designated aircrafts to embark and disembark the passengers from aircrafts. They also record and transfer
financial reports on how many aircrafts parked on the apron.

In line with Ethiopian strategic move in overcoming the challenges that we faced as a result of the COVID-19

Pandemic, the marshaller department is working on creating short and long term solution for parking aircrafts

which aren’t flying at this time by following safety rules on the general aviation apron which is built by Ethiopian

Airports

Ethiopian Airlines Group IT department is implementing softphone technology; so that, all-analog systems
(landline phones) will be replaced with softphones.

A softphone is a piece of software that simulates the action of a telephone and allows us to make, receive, and
manage voice calls over the internet. Softphones run on computers, tablets, PCs, and smartphones, are necessary
for placing VoIP calls and video calls. They typically take the form of dedicated voice-calling or chat apps, or apps
embedded within other sites and services (e.g., Skype, Facebook Messenger, and Google Hangouts).

Softphone systems – otherwise known as VoIP (voice
over internet protocol) phone systems – come with
a whole load of benefits, and you will find out more
about these benefits in the sections below.

Landlines only offer very basic call functionality.
The typical house phone generally allows you to
mute a call, forward and block rogue numbers.

Swapping your landline for VoIP can help you
slash phone bills. This is generally down to the
fact that it’s cheaper to transfer a call via the
internet than the landline. Calling abroad is even
more problematic for businesses that operate
across multiple countries like
Ethiopian airlines. But, if
we say goodbye to our
business landline, we
could save up to 90% on
international calls.

Adding landline to a property usually incurs a cost, plus the time it takes for a technician to install it. You’d
need to add landline if you wanted another phone that used a different number. VoIP phones, however, allow
you to use different numbers on the same line. To add another phone number, just phone up your provider and
they’ll set it up then all you’ll need to do is connect it to your internet or local access network.

Because landlines are analog, the infrastructure requires you to be within the vicinity of a handset docking
station to take the call. However, digital phone systems don’t require the same physical infrastructure.
Therefore, you can pretty much make and receive calls anywhere. Much of the infrastructure of VoIP phone
systems are cloud-based. So, all you need is the software to access it. This software can be hosted on your
regular phone, and it can also be hosted on your computer or mobile phone, thanks to an application called a
softphone.

A typical space menu is made up of a lot of the same items found in homes and restaurants here on Earth.
It might include foods such as: Beef stroganoff, Brownies, Crispy rice cereal, Chicken stew, Scrambled eggs,
Pineapple, Granola bars, Macaroni and cheese, Chocolate pudding.

In recent years, space food has been used by various nations engaging in space programs as a way to share
and show off their cultural identity and facilitate intercultural communication. Although astronauts consume
a wide variety of foods and beverages in space, the initial idea from The Man in Space Committee of the
Space Science Board in 1963 was to supply astronauts with a formula diet that would supply all the needed
vitamins and nutrients.

A flight simulator is a device that artificially re-creates aircraft flight and the environment in which it flies,
for pilot training, design, or other purposes. It includes replicating the equations that govern how aircraft
fly, how they react to applications of flight controls, the effects of other aircraft systems, and how the
aircraft reacts to external factors such as air density, turbulence, wind shear, cloud, precipitation, etc.

Flight simulation is used for a variety of reasons, including flight training (mainly of pilots), the design and
development of the aircraft itself, and research into aircraft characteristics and control handling qualities.

A flight simulator is a device that artificially re-creates aircraft flight and the environment in which it flies.
A flight simulator provides
several advantages and are
integral to modern aviation
programs.

Whenever you are using
flight simulators, fuel costs,
insurance fees and other
aircraft related costs are
going to be cutoff while
adding up Safety, Training
availability (20 hours per
day) and difficult training
scenarios which is not
affordable to try on an
aircraft and a Human life,
such as Engine fire and
disintegration, Ditching,
Upset Recovery Training,
etc.

Most flight training centers
own and operate different
types of aircraft simulators
including Ethiopian.
There are various types,
classifications and ratings of
flight simulators from Home
built to real Full Flight
Simulators.

In general, starting from the August 2020
simple simulation programs
to the complex Full Flight
Simulators, it is going to
cost $15-69 million without
the facility costs. Ethiopian
installed the first Full Flight
Simulator (B767/B757) on
1993.

Ethiopian airlines currently own 7 Full Flight simulators (B767/B757, B737, B737 Max, A350, B777,
B787, Q400), 6 Flight Training Devices (DA40, DA42, C172, B737), 2 Wide Bodied and Narrow
Bodied Cabin Crew trainers (B757, B787, B737 with and without motion), 3 Cabin Crew Door Trainers
(Q400, B767, A350), 5 Integrated Pilot Trainers (B777, B787, .B737MAX, Q400, A350) which is a
total sum of 23 Flight Simulators.

Thousands of pilots, cabin crew and flight crew trainees has been trained from different countries since
the installation of our first simulator B707 several years ago and All of Ethiopian pilots are trained in the
base (HQ) currently.

Ethiopian committed to boost this division because of three main reasons; to Train Safely, to Train any
time in less time for less expense.
