IRREECHAA FESTIVAL

One of the distinct thanksgiving celebrations in the traditional religion of the Oromos (Waaqeffannaa)
iscalled“Irreechaa”or“Irreessaa”which means thanks giving and has been taking place for more than 6000 years.
The festival attracts many people from all walks of life to witness the unique and color fulcele bration of thank
fulness, blessings and prayers to God (Waaqa) for their achievements and requesting peace and harmony between
nature and man and for the health of theirfamilies, relatives, animal sand the country as awhole.

The observance of this unique festival marks two seasonal shifts. The Irreechaa Tulluu is an annual festival observed
in May at the top of mountains to mark the end of the dry season and the onset of the rainy season. The second
festival Irreechaa Malkaa takes place normally at the end of September or beginning of October with the onset
and welcome of the dry season and to pray for a good harvest after the rains. Many Oromos come to the river
or the sea or the lake with an outlet that has since long been chosen to be the place for this annual and colorful
thanksgivingcelebration.

In the traditional religion of the Oromos, the spirit is the power through which Waqaa (The Almighty God)
governs all over the world. Thus, Oromos believe that every creation of Waqaa has its own spirit. Most of all,
they believe that this spirit resides over the sea and rivers and that mountain peaks are holy. The Irreechaa is the
main part of the Gadaa system-the basis of democratic political system among the Oromos with the power to
administer the affairs of the nation and the power to make laws belong to the people. Every male member of
the society who is of age and of Gadaa grade has full rights to elect and to be elected, and is the time of peace
and tranquility to be celebrated by all; a time of peaceful coexistence and mutual respect.

The Gada System, which is the social, political and cultural reflection of the traditional Oromo people, was
registered in the UNESCO list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in October 2016.

ETHIOPIAN HISTORY

HARAR- A CITY OF LOVE

The fortified historic town of Harar

(ሐረር) is located in the eastern part

of Ethiopia, 525 km from Addis Ababa.

From the 11th century on, Harar

grew into a crossroads for commerce Assefa Batu
Senior Tour Operator,

East, and also became a gateway for

the spread of Islam into the Horn of

Africa. In the later period, it served as the political capital

of an independent emirate that survived until 1887. Harar is

often referred to as the fourth-holiest city in Islam and known

in Arabic as Madeenat-ul-Awliya (the City of Saints).

Harar is a city that leaves a lasting impression on those who
set foot in it. Harar is like Noah’s Ark of culture. It is a home
for multi-ethnic and multi-religious communities. Harar is the
best example where so many cultures; Islamic and non-Islam,
indigenous African, and Asian, coexist peacefully. In 2003, the
city was given a World City of Peace award by the United
Nations, in honor of Harar’s unique ability to accommodate
many cultures and religions in a small space without conflict.

The city of Harar is divided into two parts: the “new” and
“the old” Harar. The latter is registered in UNESCO’s world
heritage list in 2006, highlighting its unique and exceptional
architecture, which captures the African and Islamic culture
of its inhabitants. UNESCO hails the city as a “rare example
of a relatively well-preserved historic town that has retained
its traditions, urban fabric, and rich Harari Muslim cultural
heritage to the present time”.

Harar is Ethiopia’s only walled city. The five-meter-high walls,
surrounding this sacred Muslim city were built between the 13th and 16th centuries as a protective barrier against
intruders. The old Harar is enclosed by 5 entry gates.

This historic city has kept its traditional housing reasonably intact. Harar Jugol numbers 82 mosques, three of
which date from the 10th century, 102 shrines and several traditional, Indian and combined townhouses with
unique interior designs, constitute a spectacular part of Harar’s cultural heritage. The building types and the
entire urban layout reflect the impact of African and Islamic ensemble traditions, which give a particular character
and even uniqueness to Harar Jugol.

The beauty of Harar does not end with its architecture. The locals’ traditional costumes are as colorful and
captivating as the architecture in the city. The city is well known for its superb handicrafts that include woven
textiles, basketries, silverware and handsomely bound books.

In Harar, a long-standing tradition of feeding meat to spotted hyenas also evolved into an impressive night show for visitors.
As evening falls, local men attract wild hyenas to the city in a bizarre spectacle as they bravely feed these dangerous scavengers.
Porridge feeding of hyenas during Ashura (a holiday) is also equally interesting. During Ashura, villagers prepare bowls of
porridge and present it to the hyenas that act very disciplined and let a white hyena, believed to be a leader, test it first before
they join in. Depending on how the ceremony goes down a forecast of the coming season is made.

The presence of four museums makes Harar a city with the second-highest number of museums in Ethiopia,

ET-STAR GUEST

About myself

My name is Aziza Mahmud. I was born and raised in Addis Ababa. I am married and a mother of three.

I have a BA degree in Business Administration and Information System (BAIS) from Addis Ababa University, College
of Commerce. I had worked in different offices before I joined ET in November 2015. I currently hold the position of
Team Leader, Employee Benefits & HR Records.

Employee benefits given in our office

The service we offer from our office involves providing various supporting documentation for our staff. This includes
embassy and other affidavit letters to various external organizations. We also offer reduced ticket and cargo shipment
services depending on employees’ privileges. Then there is the maintenance of employee records which starts from the
day they are hired and goes on until they leave our company; of course, we do work with our retired colleagues and their
families long after they have left the company. Based on these records we also issue ID cards to both employees and their
dependents. With regards to health, we offer the services of a state-of-the-art gymnasium. We offer breast pumps on
loan to our colleagues who are breastfeeding. When it comes to financial support we facilitate various discounts between
our staff and various external service providers via discount and credit sales. We also offer vegetables at a discounted rate.

What makes our benefit unique?

The fact that we offer our services to an employee – and their families – from the day they are hired until they leave ET makes
our services unique. Even when an employee has passed away, we still offer services to their surviving family members.

How ET-staff automation helped my department

This system has made it easier and safer to continue to offer our
services, especially when considering we are in the middle of the
COVID-19 pandemic. It has also eliminated the back-and-forth
that was common when tickets needed to be issued manually –
our customers are happier.

The challenges of our internal customer

We aim to satisfy all our clients; from top to bottom, and with
no exception. Ideally, we love if everyone leaves our office with
smile. But, there are times when that isn’t so. This is usually caused
by incomplete documentation, not fulfilling requirements, and

not following instructions. To solve this
issue, we highly recommend our clients
get all the required information before
they even come to us. We have shared our
contact information in which our customers
check whether they have all the required
information at hand before they come to
our office.

My good experience

Some of my best memories come from
working with Mrs. Hizbawit Samuel and
Mr. Mesfin Teffera. I started working with
them when I joined ET and it has been a
privilege working with them. They set good
examples for me to follow in their footsteps.
They instilled positivity in me; they taught
me to go the extra mile to help others. It is
an experience I will never forget and hope to
pass on to the next generation.

Aircraft Redelivery is one of the major process in ET-MRO that won’t miss anyone untouched in the division.

THE SECRET OF LIVING A HAPPY LIFE

Lots of people are seen struggling and searching for happiness in
life, but happiness is already in their hands. It available at any time, it
doesn’t cost a dim it’s free and doesn’t depend on age, looks, career
or income. This is because it is a choice!

In all circumstances, happiness remains to be the result of three Dr. Saba Fikru
major factors;
Head Medical and Health Services
♦ Letting go of what was in the past and what will be,

♦ Accepting what there is for now and,

♦ Having gratitude for what you have and appreciate it.

These three factors will help people to free themselves from burdens of the past, anxiety of the future
and will start living in the present moment and will be able to see all the beauty of life by focusing on
what they have and being grateful for it.

Every day in our life, we make decision which is based on our choice over many things and its outcome,
which could be a positive or a negative thing that can affects our life. These choices and decisions have
a wide range which could be our relationships, carriers & jobs, lifestyle, health and the list could be
long. Living a complicated life, having no time for ourselves, unable to sleep well because of the many
thoughts popping in our heads constantly and many more are a results of the decisions we make due to
our choices.

Being healthy physically, mentally, socially and emotionally is also result of such choices and decisions.
Being healthy in all these areas has a major contribution to stay happy. The choice we make over our food
selection, choice to engage in physical activities, the choice to consume alcohol, chat, drugs or not, the
choice in coping with stress are decisive for our happiness.

The good news about all these is that whatever our situation is, we can change it. So, let us make the
right choice and a decision to achieve happiness.

VIRTUAL TRAINING AT ETHIOPIAN AVIATION ACADEMY
Aviation Academy
Beyond the impacts of COVID-19 global crisis, there are identified growth areas in
the 21st century and one of them is education thus people will increase their investment
on education as more and more people are realizing that education is the greatest
equalizer in our world today. We followed the trends and took first mover advantages
by paving the way to use the virtual training.

The virtual training delivery platform is developed at EAA to continue delivering
classes that were interrupted due to Covid-19.

Virtual training is a synchronous training method in which a virtual environment is used by instructors to conduct
training to learners who are in separate locations from the instructor via a shared collaboration software program
specifically created to host virtual training. Virtual training includes a visual connection between the instructor
and learners.

To realize the virtual training there are different tools that it uses such us Learning management system (LMS):
It is a software application for the administration, documentation, tracking, reporting and delivery of electronic
educational technology (also called e-learning) courses or training programs.

The virtual classes set up is secured by making sure that: the classroom is quite and with no background distractions
is reserved in advance, there is a strong internet connection, there is optimize communication techniques, all other
applications are closed and app and email notifications are disable, notice paper is placed which shows that a
virtual training is in progress.

Quiz and assignments are prepared and uploaded at the LMS in advance. The instructor releases it to the trainees
at the appropriate time with clear instruction on how and when to submit the assignment or exercise.

EAA will also continue using the virtual training platform as an alternative to deliver selected courses in the future.

INFORMATION AND TECHNOLOGY

Augmented Reality in Aviation Industry

The principle behind Augmented reality is that the camera captures the real-world image and presents it to
the user along with digital information using different variables. AR is an interactive experience of a real-world
environment where the objects that reside in the real world are enhanced by computer generated perceptual
information.

AR opportunities and benefits for the aviation industry

The Ground Staff can see moving cargo containers through the Smart glasses in order to fetch all information
about it including what’s inside, unit number, weight, position and loading sequence for each container within
aircraft hold.

Augmented reality is not a new term in aviation. However, it has been a military technology for a long time. Jet
planes all over the world use augmented reality navigation to fly, target, navigate and complete their mission. A
glass screen in front of the pilot allows him or her to make correct decisions that keep the pilot and the fighter jet
safe. Now, the same technology is coming to the commercial flying.

AR in aircraft Maintenance

The application of AR in aircraft maintenance can result in amazing benefits in terms of safety. The commercial
flight engineers can leverage AR to inspect and maintain their aircraft with such a comprehensive inspection, the
maintenance of the aircraft can become incredibly successful, which brings safety to the industry.

Passage experience enhancement

The below image shows a hypothetical AR view of a passenger, where the view is enhanced with information
(sensory input, static and dynamic information sources, location and object) and functionalities (e.g. buying
lounge access by looking at the lounge access button at the top right corner of the view, and blinking twice)

There is a big change coming in the commercial aviation industry with Augmented Reality

Safety in MRO ET-Star

SAFETY IN MRO

WHAT IS SAFETY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (SMS)?

International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO)
defines SMS as a systematic approach to managing
safety, including the necessary organizational structures,
accountabilities, policies and procedures.

SMS has four pillars: safety policy and objectives, safety
risk management, safety assurance and safety promotion.

Why Safety Management System (SMS)?

Implementing SMS is beneficial to Ethiopian Airlines
Group because SAFETY is the organization’s first priority.
And the structured management approach SMS uses to
control safety risks in the operation helps ET to meet its
objective of providing a safe and reliable service across all
strategic business units.

Safety at Ethiopian Maintenance Repair & Overhaul
(MRO)

As one of the strategic business unit of Ethiopian
Airlines Group, Ethiopian MRO is implementing SMS
in its operations. In order for ET-MRO to deliver a
serviceable and SAFE product (aircraft/component/
engine), safety risks related to the maintenance operation
need to be maintained at an acceptable level, that is, As
Low as Reasonably Practicable (ALARP). This can be
achieved by identifying hazards (reactively, proactively
and predictively) and mitigating the risks associated with
these hazards.

All stakeholders, including the management and
operational personnel has a role to play in the effective
implementation of the SMS.

Safety reports play a key role in maintaining a SAFE maintenance environment because operational personnel
encounter hazards/unsafe conditions on a day-to-day basis. And identifying hazards and safety deficiencies
proactively and predictively will help to manage safety risks to an acceptable level (ALARP) before an incident
or an accident happens.

SAFETY is everyone’s responsibility!

ET-Star Africa and Its Closed Skies

AFRICA AND ITS CLOSED SKIES

Now it’s been more than 3 decades since most of the African countries have come Yonas Embiale
up with the idea of opening up their skies and liberalizing the air transport industry Sr. QMS & SMS Officer
for the very first time in history. Taking in to account the time, a random person with
no idea about the details might easily think that the African skies are already opened Ethiopian Airports
up long ago. Unfortunately, that’s not the reality up until now. From 1988 where
the Yamoussoukro declaration was first signed by most of the African nations, to the
recent Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM) the issue has gone through
many stages of negotiations by the head of states among the signatory countries; Yet
African skies are still full of restrictions for its own carriers and as a result the sky is
dominated by non-African operators.

The Yamoussoukro decision of 1999 which is adopted from the 1988 declaration has put major points regarding
air service liberalization in the continent despite its implementation shortfalls.

Then, after some passive times, the SAATM project has been launched. SAATM is one among other flagship
projects of the African Union Agenda 2063, an initiative of the Union to create a single unified air transport
market and liberalized civil aviation in Africa. Nonetheless, some countries are not showing interest in signing the
commitment until now.

Now, the question arises here. Why is AU not successful in convincing the rest of member states who didn’t
still sign the agreement and fully implement the commitment? In my opinion, there is not much effort made
in advocating the central idea of SAATM where some nations seem like they didn’t get the importance of
putting it into practice. Some even are very challenging to accept it in fear of being dominated by the biggest
carriers of the continent. Had it been proper and continuous advocacy campaign done with those countries,
there would not be such a problem. The irony is, those who are in fear of unfair market shares, doesn’t even have
a competitive national carrier and their skies are already being dominated by non-African operators, yet they are
putting restrictions on their fellow African carriers.

The way the project is handled should also be examined and a new approach might be something necessary to
expedite its full implementation. Studies done in air service liberalization shows that liberalized air service result
in lower transportation cost, and boosts trade and tourism sectors.

Therefore, considering all the opportunities that the SAATM offers for the development of African citizens,
countries should no longer restrict their skies. Nations who are yet to sign the agreement must take action if they
are committed enough to change the harsh economic reality where the continent has been facing so far.
