Memory Matters is a local award-winning not for profit organization that serves persons with dementia
and their families. There are three major components to our organization.

1. A social day program for persons with dementia that focuses on their abilities through dementia specific
programming such as music, art, and pet therapy. In addition, Memory Matters invested in a computer
program, It’s Never Too Late (IN2L), which offers over 4,000 programs to stimulate the brain.

2. Caregiver support groups which allow for people to share their experiences as they move throughout their
journey while receiving resources and building relationships with others.

3. Community-wide education for people to learn more about dementia, caregiving, and other resources in
our community through events, speaking engagements, and educational classes.

As an active member of the Hilton Head and Bluffton community, Memory Matters wanted to revolu-
tionize our community. In 2015, Memory Matters launched a program called the Purple Angel Project. The
Purple Angel Project is an international program that started in the UK. Memory Matters partnered with
the international movement to bring the program to the Hilton Head-Bluffton area to create one of the first
dementia friendly communities in the United States.

The goal of the Purple Angel Project is to educate the community about dementia. Our vision is to create a
community that is understanding and supportive of persons with dementia and their families.

patients needing physical rehabilitation, it’s a path to get back on their feet and the activities they
enjoy. For expectant parents and their relatives, it’s the beginning of one of life’s greatest journeys.
No matter what the circumstance, Hilton Head Hospital and Coastal Carolina Hospital are dedi-

Hilton Head Hospital: Specialized Treatment to Save Lives
Since opening its doors over four decades ago, Hilton Head Hospital has provided critical care

and proudly served the residents and visitors of Hilton Head Island, Bluffton, Okatie and
surrounding communities. With a core of dedicated, skilled physicians and well-trained staff,

the hospital has been able to develop highly
specialized programs for treatment of diseases
and injuries right here at home.

At the 93-bed hospital off of Beach City
Road on Hilton Head, patients and visitors
can find a vast array of healthcare services,
such as award winning cardiac care including
open heart surgery; a dedicated spine center
and orthopedic center, obstetrics/gynecology,
surgical services, physical rehabilitation and
wellness. Specialty orthopedic services include,
MAKOplasty, a robotic arm-assisted surgical
procedure designed to relieve pain caused by
joint degeneration due to osteoarthritis. At
Hilton Head Hospital, MAKOplasty® is cur-
rently being used to treat the damaged part of
the knee.
Patients with serious injuries or dangerous symptoms can find treatment at the hospital’s 24-
hour emergency department. An online emergency room check-in service allows patients with
some symptoms to reserve a place and come to the ER at a designated time for care.
Hilton Head Hospital’s cancer care program, affiliated with the Medical University of South
Carolina Hollings Cancer Center, features Beaufort County’s only nationally accredited Breast
Health Center. It offers 3-D Breast Tomosynthesis and a dedicated breast surgeon.
Outpatient services are available at the two-year old Bluffton Medical Campus, located on 75
Baylor Drive in Bluffton – midway between Hilton Head and Coastal Carolina Hospitals. While
patients and their families will find a range of services at the hospitals, they can find access to
other convenient care at our Bluffton Medical Campus. The 60,000 sq. foot outpatient center was
designed as a one-stop shop for the convenience of patients. They can schedule appointments
with a primary care doctor, have blood drawn, receive their imaging and attend physical therapy
all in one building.

In the last year, our surgical services offerings have been enhanced with the addition of the da
Vinci® Robotic Surgical System. Our surgeons have been trained to use da Vinci to perform
procedures such gall bladder removal and hysterectomies through tiny incisions.

The hospital also is one of two places in South
Carolina where men can have prostate biopsies
done with the aid of Artemis - a new technology
that brings detailed, three-dimensional imaging to
bear on prostate cancer. Physicians have long been
unable to accurately visualize tumors during pros-
tate biopsies, but that has improved thanks to the
Artemis device.

Advanced technology has made it possible for
persons suffering with a stroke to receive a higher
level of care. The hospital’s stroke program is part
of the Medical University of South Carolina’s tele-
medicine network. The network provides around-
the-clock access to MUSC’s neurosurgeons, who
can help diagnose patients with stroke symptoms
via video – saving time and lives. The launch of this
service earned Coastal designation from The Joint
Commission as a primary stroke center.

Patients and visitors to Coastal will find many other essential services at the 41-bed acute care
hospital. Among there are primary care, a dedicated Women’s Pavilion, 24-hour emergency car,
imaging, laboratory and pathology services, surgery, physical rehab and the only certified
pulmonary rehabilitation program in South Carolina. The hospital offers wound healing and
ostomy care at its Center for Hyperbarics and Wound Healing at the Bluffton Medical Campus.
