MESSAGE FROM
2021-2022 ROTARY INTERNATIONAL
DISTRICT 3310 GOVERNOR
DOLLY YEAP
Dear Fellow Rotarians,
I look forward to this Pan Borneo Meet every year as it gives me the opportunity to
meet fellow Rotarians and friends from this Borneo region and from far and near too.
We are indeed blessed to be able to organise this Pan Borneo Meet physically,
something that all of us are looking forward to. Nothing can beat meeting in person.
Thank you to Rotary Club of Kota Kinabalu Pearl for accepting the invitation to be the
host club. I have every confidence that the event will be colourful and lively. You will
not find a dull moment as the committee has laid out programs that are interesting
and enjoyable.
I am excited about the yearly joint project that you have for Pan Borneo and the theme
chosen is most appropriate as it is in line with one of our areas of focus, that is the
environment. Let’s go under the sea to explore, which is something we have not done
for a long time. Please contribute generously to the success of this conservation
project.
I hope to meet all of you again to rekindle our friendship and fellowship and make this
event a great success. Unity amongst the clubs in Pan Borneo started long ago and
may it continue for years to come.
I wish to thank and congratulate the Organizing Chairperson
Rotarian Rosie Chong, Vice President of the Rotary Club of
Kota Kinabalu Pearl, and her entire committee for coming
together to make this event possible. Let’s celebrate!
Yours in Rotary,

MESSAGE FROM
HOST CLUB 2021-2022 PRESIDENT
MAJELLA MARJORIE
TAN MARQUEZ
Dear Fellow Rotarians,
Welcome to Kota Kinabalu, Sabah and the 31st Pan Borneo Inter-clubs Meet. As your
host club we have prepared a 3-day program that aims to provide opportunities for
Rotarians to meet and greet physically, exchange ideas and identify projects that could
be jointly undertaken by the clubs.
Our theme for the 31st Pan Borneo Inter-clubs Meet, is "The Enchanting Ocean" which
relates to the Environment. Very befitting as it is in line with Rotary International’s 7th
Area of Focus. The 25 clubs headed by the Rotary Club of Kota Kinabalu Pearl (RCKK
Pearl) are partnering with Marine Ecology Research Centre (MERC) in an effort to
rehabilitate Giant Clams and Coral Reefs at the Malohom Bay, Kota Kinabalu.
RCKK Pearl is indeed honoured to be given this opportunity to host such an event and
is very thankful to the District 3310 first woman Governor Dolly Yeap, for her trust and
confidence in us. To PDG Datuk Haji Zainie Abdul Aucasa for his advice and guidance
all the way. To the Organising Chairperson Rosie Chong, who is also Vice President of
RCKK Pearl, and her vibrant team for their excellent effort in making this 3-day 31st
Pan Borneo Meet become a reality.

MESSAGE FROM
ORGANISING CHAIRPERSON
ROTARIAN ROSIE CHONG
Fellow Rotarians, Spouses and Friends of Rotary,
Welcome to Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, the Land Below the Wind - home to this year’s Pan
Borneo Meet.
Thank you to DG Dolly Yeap for entrusting the Rotary Club of Kota Kinabalu Pearl to
host the 31st Pan Borneo Meet. We are thrilled that we can come together amidst this
endemic. As borders reopen, we are honoured to have participants from Rotary Clubs
in Borneo, but also from other Rotary Clubs in District 3310 and beyond!
Connect, Knowledge Exchange, Network. These are the pillars of this year’s 31st Pan
Borneo Meet Conference. Meet global industry leaders, policy makers and
environmental advocates who work towards a shared goal of marine ecosystem
awareness and conservation in line with the 7th area of Focus; the environment.
As part of the joint project undertaken by the participating Rotary Clubs of the Pan
Borneo Meet, we are also excited to collaborate with Marine Ecology Research Centre
(MERC) in an effort to rehabilitate Giant Clams and Reefs in Kota Kinabalu. This is an
amazing opportunity to learn how we can apply Rotary’s Motto of Service Above Self in
supporting activities that strengthen the conservation and protection of natural
resources, advance ecological sustainability, and foster harmony between
communities and the environment.
This joint project aims to protect and restore the marine ecosystem
in Malohom Bay to extend MERC’s efforts in replanting broken
corals and restocking Giant Clams on the sea bed. Giant Clams are
the kidneys of the ocean - they filter the water by absorbing
nitrates, ammonia and harmful organics that may harm the reef
and its inhabitants. Likewise, Coral reefs aren’t just a source of food
and medicine, they protect coastlines from storms and
erosion, provide jobs for local communities, and offer
opportunities for recreation. This joint project will not only
benefit the marine ecosystem, but the surrounding
geography and communities as well. With that, we hope
this Pan Borneo Meet will inspire us to take on more
environmental projects through connecting, networking
and knowledge exchange.
Join us, as we serve to change lives.
Yours in Rotary,
Rosie Chong

Pan Borneo Inter-Club Meet
A History
The Pan Borneo Inter-Club Meet started in 1984 as an intercity meet for the Rotary
Clubs in Kuching, Sibu and Miri in Sarawak, East Malaysia, which were then under
Rotary International District 330 Group 11. As these clubs are geographically far apart
and were not easily accessible, the concept of an intercity meet was proposed by the
Rotary Club of Kuching, which was then under the leadership of President Kang Tee
Yong, in response to RI President Carlos Canseco’s theme of “Discover A New World Of
Service”.
The intercity meet would alleviate the difficulties being experienced by the three clubs
coming together to exchange ideas and would also permit closer ties to be formed
between them. Prior to this, the only time the clubs made contacts was when visiting
Rotarians from one of the clubs attend the Rotary meetings of another club.
The objectives of the intercity meet were:
To provide opportunity for Rotarians in these clubs to meet
To exchange ideas on all aspects of the Rotary movement
To identify a project that could be jointly undertaken by the clubs
The proposal was readily accepted by the Rotary Club of Sibu and Miri, which was
under the leadership of President Clement Tiong and Kiu Chiong Ming respectively.
The first Pan Borneo Intercity Meet was held in Kuching on 8th December 1984. It was
attended by the Presidents of all the three clubs and more than thirty Rotarians. In
1987, the Intercity Meet expanded to include Rotary Clubs from Sabah and Brunei to
become the Pan Borneo Inter-Club Meet. A tradition of the annual Pan Borneo Inter-
Club Meet started then with a Pan Borneo project being carried out by the hosting
club, funded by RM1,000.00 contribution from each participating club in the Pan
Borneo region.
The Rotary Club of Miri hosted the first Pan Borneo Inter-Club Meet and the first Pan
Borneo project was the donation of medial and sports equipment to the Home for the
Aged in Miri. The second Pan Borneo Inter-Club Meet was hosted by the Rotary Club of
Bintulu although there was no Pan Borneo project carried out then. It is now held
annually and hosted in rotation by a Rotary Club in Borneo.
In the true spirit of Rotary, participation in the Pan Borneo Inter-Club
Meet has not been confined to Rotary Clubs from Borneo alone. At
each Meet, Rotarians from our neighbours join us in the spirit of
fellowship, in peace and understanding, in furthering our guiding
principle of Service Above Self.
30th Pan Borneo Inter-Club Meet
Report
The Rotary Club of Kuching Central (RCKC)
hosted the 30th Pan Borneo Meet from 2-4
November 2018. After hosting in 1992 and
2013, this was the 3rd time for RCKC to play
host. This time, a grand total of 228
participants from 49 clubs in District 3310
and 4 in District 3300 converged at the
Riverside Majestic Hotel for the 3-day event.
PDG Henry Tan declared the start of the 30th Pan Borneo Meet officially with resounding booms of
the ceremonial gong at the Official Opening Ceremony. This was followed by the vibrant Welcome
Dinner where everyone was dressed up in their finest batik or cultural costumes. After Organising
Chair PP Thomas Ngu and President Jong Kiam Ngee warmly welcomed all guests to Kuching, guests
were feted to a fusion buffet of Sarawakian and international dishes, and entertained by the talented
children of Yayasan Prima Unggul from Jakarta.
The next day, Rotarians got down to business as they listened to local experts sharing their knowledge
on electrification, solar energy, clean water and empowering local women in Sarawak in the morning
plenary session. The attendees were privileged to hear from distinguished Rotarian speakers on
topics ranging from membership growth to disaster relief and management.
At the same time, the spouse programme had several engaging
speakers sharing on local biodiversity and efforts to engage local
women in sustainable crafting business ventures. They were also able
to try out some arts and crafts of their own.
That evening, the Governor’s Banquet began with the thunderous
welcome provided by the Chung Hua Middle School’s drum troupe.
Besides that, the Yayasan Prima Unggul group was back to captivate
everyone’s eyes and ears with their performances as participants
enjoyed the dinner. The fellowship continued late into the night in the
ever-popular House of Friendship.
It was an early start that Sunday with a simple handover ceremony
for the joint Pan Borneo Meet project as per tradition. This year, 12
belian wood benches with a panel showing the names of the
contributing clubs from Borneo and Beyond were handed over to the
Kuching Waterfront Management and Council of Kuching City North
(DBKU). It is hoped that these benches would provide people with
more relaxing spots to enjoy the beauty and charm of our waterfront
for many years to come.
Although it was a short 3-day event, there were engaging talks,
sharing of knowledge, great entertainment, plenty of fellowship and a
multitude of laughs and smiles. The Rotary Club of Kuching Central
would like to thank all for the continued support of our activities over
the years. We wish the organisers of the 31st Pan Borneo Meet and
those in the future every success!
31st Pan Borneo Inter-Club Meet
Joint Project
Gaya is the largest island in the Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park and a 20-minute
boat ride from the mainland of Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. Malohom Bay, located at the
coast of Gaya Island, has suffered severe damage from destructive fishing activities,
indiscriminate dumping of rubbish as well as unmanaged recreational activities like
snorkeling.
The Joint Project for the 31st Pan Borneo Meet will involve the adoption of corals and
giant clams, to participate in coral restoration and giant clam propagation at Malohom
Bay. This project is in line with Rotary International's 7th, and new, area of focus in
strengthening and conserving the environment. The project partner, MERC (Marine
Ecology Research Centre) is a privately funded research and rehabilitation facility
whose work is in the conservation and restoration of the marine eco-system and the
coral reef.
Corals are essential to the biological balance of the ocean and amongst other reasons,
corals provide habitats and shelter for many marine organisms. Upon the adoption of
each precious coral, MERC will provide updates on the growth and progress of each
coral. Giant clams are the marine world's filters as they take in harmful waste
nutrients.
In appreciation of the donation of RM27,000 from this joint project, MERC has agreed
to extend 50 giant clams and 50 corals for adoption in the name of the participating
Rotary clubs. For the first year, MERC will share bi-annual updates on the progress and
growth of each clam.
Through this project, Rotarians will be able to participate in the important
environmental mission to produce life of threatened and endangered species which
are likely destined for extinction, namely the beautiful and precious coral, as well as
the giant clams.

The fisheries sector faces many threats and issues. Fisheries and
aquatic environments are severely degraded in many parts of the

focused mainly on fish and fishing without considering that many
issues are interlinked. Since the inception of the Coral Triangle

actively promoting the Ecosystem Approach for Fisheries
Management (EAFM) into fisheries management.

13th March 2022, which was officially declared open by our Minister of
Health, YB Khairy Jamaluddin. RC Tawau donated a total of 200 sets
Intraocular lens (IOL) for the underprivileged cataract patients with a total
cost of RM80,000 which was secured from the Global Grant of Rotary
International.
This project was successfully carried out with the strong support from
sister club, Rotary Club of Damansara-West, who assisted to liaise with
Datuk Dr Fariza of Malaysia National Ophthalmology Services to bring
along a team of doctors and assistants together with private eye
specialists, Dr Chung and Dr Peter Kong. With the team of specialists and
doctors, our club helped Tawau General Hospital clear part of the backlog
of 360 cataract patients who have been waiting to be operated on since
the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The event was made possible with the participation and collaboration
from Malaysia Medical Association, Johnson & Johnson Malaysia, Carl
Zeiss Sdn Bhd and Teck Guan Regency who has sponsored 250 sets of
refreshments for the doctors and nurses.
RC TAWAU TANJUNG
In 2012, Rotary Club of Tawau Tanjung started the ‘SMILE’ project as
our club's signature project. There are many cleft lip and palate cases
amongst the local community in Tawau. Cleft lip and palate is the
most common facial birth defect, affecting one in 700 babies
worldwide. In Malaysia the ratio might even be higher.
Cleft lip and palate affects not only the appearance of a baby but can
interfere with eating, speaking, breathing and can cause dental
problems, ear infections, and hearing loss as well. A cleft lip or palate
can be successfully treated with surgery, especially so if conducted
soon after birth or in early childhood. The ideal age to receive
corrective surgery is between 10 and 12 weeks for cleft lip and
between 9 and 18 months for cleft palate.
Working together with the Tawau General Hospital, with funding
support from our Taiwan sister club, over the years we have
sponsored more than 30 patients. To continue benefiting local
communities in 2020, we submitted our 'Bring a Smile' Global Grant
Project application that has now been approved. Now, patients from
Hospital Kunak, Hospital Semporna and Hospital Lahad Datu will also
benefit from this project.
RC SANDAKAN
Our club, together with the Rotary Club of Sandakan North and the Sandakan Chinese Women's
Association, held a blood donation campaign in aid of the Sandakan Duchess of Kent Hospital's Blood
Bank.
The campaign received much publicity and support from various sponsors who kindly donated
packets of rice, instant noodles, eggs, biscuits, cooking oil, sugar, face masks and hand sanitizers to
the blood donors. The campaign was held successfully on 19th December 2021 where we managed to
collect 98 pints of blood.

The establishment of Elopura Recreation Park was
initiated by previous State Assemblyman Datuk Au
Kam Wah where RC Sandakan was invited to be a
partner in this project. We took this opportunity to
make this the joint community project in conjunction

us in March 2011.
With the approval and blessing from the Majlis
Perbandaran Sandakan former president Datuk Ir.

Au, the construction works were carried out smoothly
and completed ahead of schedule before the 24th Pan
Borneo Meet.
The Elopura Recreation Park is equipped with jogging
track, pavilion, barbeque area and car park. This park
is not only a tourist spot for visitors to enjoy the
spectacular scenery of Sandakan, but also a great
place for local residents to work out and relax.

Past President Ku Ah Kong (1999-2000) to
commemorate the millennium 2000 and also to make
this tower a landmark to attract tourists from local and
abroad and thus promote Rotary image in the public.

Our club recently provided the Gift of Sound to two 4-year
old girls. The cochlear implants done in November proved
successful as the toddlers both responded well to sounds.
Not only will this help restore their hearing, but will aid in
their understanding of speech, which is crucial at their age
as they begin to learn how to speak and communicate
with others. This project was in collaboration with the
Ministry of Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women,
Family & Childhood Development, Borneo Medical Centre,
Hearing Concept, Professor Dr Tang and Hotel 56.
We also collaborated with the Rotaract Club of SEGi College Sarawak to carry out the District 3310
Covid-19 Response Grant project ‘Hope for Infants’ Needs’ to provide milk powder to mothers
affected by the economic impact of the pandemic. The committee worked closely with the doctors
from Klinik Ibu dan Anak Sekama to identify mothers in need of the support. The first phase of
deliveries to 13 families was completed over two weekends in early January. Besides the milk powder,
generous Rotarians also contributed food parcels and angpows to be given to each family to help ease
their burden slightly during these difficult times.

The Rotary Club of Miri Oil Town are pleased to announce the
completion of the pre-fabricated structure which has been
modified to function as a Drive-Through Pharmacy within the
compound of the Tudan Health Clinic at Jalan Tudan Permyjaya,
Miri.
This project was a result of an ‘answer to a call’ of the Tudan Health
Clinic where we were informed that the management of the Tudan
Health Clinic had requested for a drive-through pharmacy. The
need for such a facility was primarily to ease the congestion at the polyclinic, and the move will be an
integral part of the polyclinic’s series of measures to improve customers’ convenience and safety, in
the wake of the social distancing and hygiene regulation mandated by the Ministry of Health Malaysia
due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
