A Pearl is a beautiful thing that is produced by an injured life. It is the
tear that results from the injury of the oyster. Likewise, the treasure of our
being in this world is also produced by an injured life. If we had not been
injured through life experiences, then we would not produced the Pearl. -

ASSISTANT GOVERNOR'S SPECIAL OPENING MESSAGE
Greetings Rotary Club of Kota Kinabalu Pearl
It is a privilege, and my pleasure to be able to share my thoughts on your Club in this first
issue of your quarterly bulletin for RY2021-22.
My warmest regards and congratulations to President Majella Marjorie
Tan Marquez and the new Board for RY2021-22, as well as all of your
Club members on your recent successful virtual installation on 31/07/21.
Heartiest congratulations also to Immediate Past President Eliza Goh
and her Board of RY2020-21, for a very successful term during the
toughest period of our times - the start of Covid-19 pandemic.
We are still in the throes of the current pandemic, and a lot of
physical activities are still restricted. However, your Club has shown
the resilient spirit of Rotary and also persistence in continuing to do
good for the community despite the challenges we are all facing. I do
hope that in the midst of your busy Rotary activities as well as your
own lives, your Club finds time for fellowship to strengthen the bond
among members, and avoid the boredome of a regimented
task-focused-only Club. Though we are in a period restricted physical contact, virtual
fellowship is available to us and a safer alternative.
In the outworkings of any Club's service projects or charitable works, good leadership and
teamwork as well as proper planning go hand-in-hand to achieve the utmost impact on the
community. From what I've seen of your Club, you are already practicing such good values
successfully.
It is my hope, and I'm sure, that your Club will continue to strive to do your best in doing
good deeds, not just during this term but also for a much longer time into the future.
Let's work together to #ServeToChangeLives.

THE PRESIDENT'S "PEARLS OF WISDOM"
My beautiful fellow Pearls in service,
I am honoured to have the privilege of serving as your President for RY2021-22, and I
welcome you to our Club's first issue of bulletin for this term.
What an inspiring theme we have this year under our Rotary International
President Shekhar Mehta, and our first ever lady District 3310
Governor Dolly Yeap - SERVE TO CHANGE LIVES. Indeed as
Rotarians, our commitment is to implement impactful service projects
that are long lasting and life-changing in our community.
Our new RI President's mantra is to "DO MORE TO GROW MORE".
I'm proud to say as your fellow Pearl, that our Club has been living
up to this mantra ever since the Club was chartered in 2015, and
more so in the past term RY2020-21 under the leadership of our
beloved Immediate Past President Eliza Goh, who rose to the
challenge of leading our Club successfully at the start of the
worst pandemic this century has ever seen. I humbly hope to
emulate her success, as well as the successes of all our Club's
Past Presidents, through this new term with the help of all you
amazing Pearls. Congratulations to you IPP Eliza Goh and to your Board of
RY2020-21.
Thank you very much to the vibrant Pearls who agreed to become my new Board of
Directors, and who have already assumed their mantle of responsibilities with diligence
and care.
Thank you very much too, to our Club's installation Organising Chair, my Vice President
Rosie Chong and her hardworking committee for the success of our recent virtual
installation on 31/07/21, with a beautiful Gatsby-era theme. Well done indeed everyone!!
Though we are now in the second year of Covid-19 pandemic, our Club has never ceased to give
hope to the community through our service projects. In fact even though we are just three months
into our new term, our Club has already been striding out to continue helping underprivileged
families who have been badly affected by the devastating effects on world economy of Covid-19.
We have our very committed Community Service Director Tulip Noorazyze and her dedicated
committee of Pearls to thank for the successful planning, as well as execution of our Club's service
projects.
We still have nine more months to go for this term. My fervent wish is that, all you beautiful
hardworking Pearls will continue to support my term so that our Club will continuously deliver
impactful service towards our community, and keep on making our Club proud in District 3310.
Together we join hands as one to #ServeToChangeLives, and make this world a better
place.

km away from Kota Kinabalu, food aid and
other necessities were delivered to Rumah
Kanak Kanak Bondulu Toboh, a Catholic

Sabah. Covid-19 pandemic made travel to
this area impossible, hence the Club relied
on Pearl member Leslie Jane Jainol to do the
purchasing and delivery of the food items
and other necessities, as she was residing
in Tambunan at this point. This particular
food aid is a spill-over from previous term

which included infant formulas, were generous donations
of Pearl member Mary Chung and her husband Allen, who
both made the 187km trip to Kudat, along with Club

tough roads nearing the village. Due to the huge volume of
food items, a truck had to be used to transport it all. All the
food supplies were delivered to Good Shepherd Church in

place.

12/07/21 - Food supplies were donated to a Center for

in Kg. Makatip Tambunan. Once again the Club had to
rely on Pearl member Leslie Jane Jainol, to do the
purchasing and delivery of all the donated supplies as
travel was restricted from Kota Kinabalu to Tambunan
during this time due to Covid-19 pandemic. The purpose
pf this Center is to temporarily house disabled adults and
children, troubled teens, and once in a while, single
mothers seeking shelter. 61 year old Sister Mary, as she
is fondly known to the villagers, was formerly attached to
the Order of St Claire in United Kingdom, before retiring
back to her home town Tambunan, Sabah. She came out
of retirement due to the many calls for help from the
villagers of Kg Makatip to have a Center for Crises built.
Our Club would like to thank all the contributors for Sister
Mary's cause from PDG Chris Chen of RC Queenstown,
PDG Henry Tan of RC Singapore West, and from Mr

how an opportunity to help can be presented to a
Rotarian in this case. These families' plight was
made known to our Pearl member Irene Chan
through one of her hiking friends Mr Edward
Moris Alus as she sometimes go hiking around
the hilly areas of Kg. Mansiang. What followed
was a chain of reaction that resulted in our Club
Community Service Director Tulip Noorazyze
purchasing food necessities for the three families
and coordinating the delivery, which was done by
IPP Eliza Goh, Irene Chan herself, Datin Rocy

IPP Eliza Goh and Irene Chan also donated solar
lights to the families as their houses had no

Persatuan Etnik Cocos Sabah or PECOS (Sabah Ethnic Cocos Association), Haji
Alipa Bin Haji Jackery was the one who reached out to NGOs to get assistance for
these families who have been quietly suffering throughout this pandemic period,
without receiving any assistance. The 59 families that were targeted resided in
various different areas in Penampang, Putatan, Sepanggar, Menggatal, Inanam

food assistance on our own. Hence all the food supplies were handed over to Haji

COMMUNITY SERVICE - SPECIAL UPDATE ON FLOOD DISASTER AID
On 15/09/21, heavy downpour resulted in the worst ever
mud flood occurrence in Kg. Sugud Maang and Madsiang
Penampang, as well as other areas. The flood caused
devastating damages to properties, submerging homes,
cars and everything else in its path, leaving hundreds of
family without proper water supply and food, as well as
having to temporarily shelter on higher grounds.
Our Club took action with Community Service Director
Tulip Noorazyze immediately coordinating purchases of
food supplies using funds donated by the LDS Church.
Meanwhile our Club Secretariat have been housing bags
of donated pre-loved clothings. One of our Pearl member
Carolyn Goh who is a member of the Buddhist
Compassion Relief Tzu Chi Foundation, took the pre-
loved clothes off our Club's "hands" which the Tzu Chi
association donated to the flood victims.
The displaced villagers lacked basic amenities so Club
members also were rallied into donating their own homes'
extra pots and pans, crockery, and other kitchen
appliances and utensils, as well as beddings, pillows,
blankets, towels and even pre-loved footwear - all of
which were stored at VP Rosie Chong's ATTHIYA SPA.

O I do hope this first issue of our Club bulletin have done
justice in covering all the activities/services carried out by
R our very vibrant and shining Pearls.
' We still have more months to cover for this term, so rest Norma Apines
assured there will be more tales of "Rotary Adventure" by

Pearls to report. In the meantime, let's take a stroll in the next feature pages
and refresh our eyes with visions of green plants and beautiful flowers that
C our lovely Pearls have been prolifically cultivating at their homes, and
O contributing much healing to Mother Earth's atmosphere. Each quarterly issue
R will feature more Pearl members' beautiful gardens. This is after all a ladies'
Club, and ladies love the beauty of plants. So, shall we walk through the
