All Service Directors, Chairs and Project Managers kick off multiple projects, events and activities. From distribution of Dictionaries, Site Visits, Youth Activities, Decoupage workshop, fellowship celebrations and trips it has been an activity filled 3 months. It has been indeed a busy second quarter of the 2022-23 term. We kicked off the month of October with the grand celebration of our 7th Anniversary Gala Dinner. This was the first time we have celebrated our event at such a grand scale. Everyone was dressed to elegantly to the theme of the "OSCARS" and the night was lively with everyone enjoying the entertainment from our singers, dancers and performers. We also took the opportunity to recognise our partners and sponsors that have made our projects possible. The night was a massive team effort by all members headed by President Elect Rosie that successfully raised funds for our service projects while bringing together Rotarians, partners, sponsors, family and friends from the community. LUSTRE 2022-23 | ISSUE 2 President's Message Yours in Rotary Datuk Hjh Aminah Ambrose President Rotary Club of Kota Kinabalu Pearl 2022-23 2 Our signature project, REAL (Rural English Focus for All), WASH Project (Water, Sanitation & Hygiene), Hope in Sight (Helping B40 women who suffers from cataract, to give these women free lens and free medical & surgery) are all going full steam ahead with all 3 projects having a busy schedule! I had the honour representing RC KK Pearl to receive the BEST STRATEGIC Partner Award presented by the Sabah Education Department for our commitment to education with Project REAL. World Sight Day marked our Hope in Sight Project this term with free cataract surgeries for 11 deserving women. And we continue to support the Gift of Sight- Joint Club Project. Club, Foundation, Youth, Vocational, Membership and International Service has also had a busy few months organizing various activities and events. A special mention to our PI Chair, Rtn Norma Alpines who has done an amazing job of keeping up with all the activities and publishing them on our Facebook. December brought the Christmas spirit and we shared the Christmas Cheer with children the Likas Women and Children’s Hospital and celebrated Christmas fellowship with our members. 5 LUSTRE 2022-23 | ISSUE 2 DISTRICT GOVERNOR CLUB VISIT AND CLUB ASSEMBLY 8 OCTOBER 2022 District 3310 Governor Joanne Kam made her official visit to RCKK Pearl. DG met with the BOD to receive activities reports and plans presented by our Club President Datuk Hjh Aminah Ambrose. This was followed by our Club's 1st Assembly for RY2022/23, but before that, all Pearls along with DG Joanne adjourned to Kowani cafe for a light lunch. Five members of KTYS Rotaractors were also among the invited guests for the lunch meet and greet with DG Joanne. At the 1st Assembly today, our newest member Marianne Naru Kiob, had the honour of being inducted in the presence of DG Joanne. Marianne's sponsor, our Club Vice President Roxana Jamaluddin also received her sponsor pin. AG Eliza Goh was also recognized by DG Joanne for her generous donation of usd$1k to polio fund. AG Eliza is now officially a member of ROTARY'S Polio Plus Society. CLUB SERVICE


6 LUSTRE 2022-23 | ISSUE 2 CLUB SERVICE Rotary Club Of Kota Kinabalu Pearl AGM and election of BOD for next term July 2022 to June 2023 was held on 27 December 2022.


7 There's something about the Christmas season that brings out all the love, good cheer and fellowship among people, and that's exactly what our Club enjoyed tonight! We had a blast at Zing Lucy's Kitchen Tg Aru KGC tonight with our Christmas fellowship gettogether that was led by our Club President Datuk Hjh Aminah Ambrose, as well as celebrating the birthdays October/November/December 2022 Pearls. There was laughter, joy and exchanging of gifts among members and guests, as well as fun games to play. We had several guests to make the event merrier - among them were David and Jody Reese from California USA, representatives of the LDS Church Foundation here in Sabah, which have been sponsoring a lot of our Club community service activities since the start of covid-19 in 2020. We also had the pleasure of Celestina Chin and her spouse Dr Terrence Soong, along with Dr Lisa Tan all from EyeMedics Specialist Eye Centre, our partner in our Hope In Sight project that provides free cataract surgery for eligible B40 women. 13 LUSTRE 2022-23 | ISSUE 2 ESCAPE TO DANUM VALLEY 04 - 06/11/22 The "great escape to nature", was organised by our Club Membership Chair Catherine Liew, A group of 38 adventurers decided to take a trip all the way to Danum Valley, Lahad Datu Sabah to get away from it all. From our Club, the Pearls who went along with some members of their families were Club President Datuk Hjh Aminah Ambrose, trip organiser Catherine Liew, PE Rosie Chong with two of her invited guests, Club International Service Director Nicole Lee, Club Secretary Hanna Ghani-Loh, members Datin Phyllis Lo with her family, Jenny Koo, Vivian Chu and Irene Chan with her friends and family. Altogether there were 25 participants just from Pearl's side (friends and family included). From our sister Club RCKLDR came Sreedaran Raman and his family, Michael & Mirella Hagelbach, Thomas Varughese and Dr Alaric Nathan. The group also included our Club's Project WASH joint partner PP Alice Teoh of RCPJ. Danum Valley is considered to be one of the world's most complex ecosystem - and is classified as Class 1 (Protection) Forest Reserve under the Sabah Forestry Enactment 1968. It serves as a natural home the world's tallest tropical tree the Yellow Meranti and wildlife species such as the clouded leopard, orang utan, slow loris and much more that inhabits this enchanted, vast green heart of Sabah. 17 LUSTRE 2022-23 | ISSUE 2 VOCATIONAL SERVICE DECOUPAGE WORKSHOP An artistic VOCATIONAL SERVICE activity was held on 10 December 2022 (Sat) at House of Decoupage Art and Crafts organised by our Club's Vocational Service Director Adelina Adenan. Our members had the opportunity to explore their artistic side and experienced how to create beautiful decoupage on bottles. The workshop was conducted by the owner of House of Decoupage Art and Crafts, Ms Annie Lai.

ROTARY has been committed in its fight to end polio for more than 30 years now. It's getting close to achieving its goal of completely eradicating this debilitating disease that attacks young children, and can cause paralysis.

21 LUSTRE 2022-23 | ISSUE 2 SISTER CLUB VISIT TO KOTA KINABALU 1 OCTOBER 2022 International Service Director Nicole Lee coordinated the visit from our sister club, RC KL Diraja who were here for our 7th Anniversary Gala Dinner. For the benefit of our international guests, a load of fun fellowship as well as nature conservation education was organised On Saturday 01 October 2022, our President Datuk Hjh Aminah Ambrose hosted lunch for our guests along with Pearl members at her home in Sutera Residence which was followed by Happy Hours @ Horizon Roof Top, Pacific Sutera for more fun and fellowship. The night before that guests had a sumptuous welcome dinner spread @ New Gaya Seafood Restaurant.

Installation of the BOD of Rotaract Club of Yayasan Sabah College of Technology (YSCT) took place on 22/10/22 on their campus at Jalan Sembulan, Kota Kinabalu. The college was formerly known as Kolej Teknikal Yayasan Sabah. Rotaract Club of YSCT is sponsored by our Club, and established since 2017. 25 LUSTRE 2022-23 | ISSUE 2 INTERACT CLUB OF SRI INSAN BORNEO IU DAY International Understanding Day (IU DAY) 23/10/22 AT SURIA SABAH Rotary Club of Kota Kinabalu is the annual organiser of this event to help raise awareness about other countries' customs and cultures. The participating Interactors showcase their selected countries through their booths/stalls, the costumes they're wearing, cultural dances, food display (which are also sold to the public attending the event), and even modelling traditional costumes of each country. This is their first time participating in this annual event. Kolopis Penampang Puan Lobua Binti Yahya, all the way from Kg Karakit, Pulau Banggi Kudat Puan Ramlah Binti Basri, a housewifefrom Kg Darau, Menggatal Puan Norijam Binti Pidli from Penampang Puan Rabaiah Binti Bujang from Kimanis Papar Madam Leo Fatima Chan from Tanjung Aru. Free cataract surgeries were performed on six B40 women at EyeMedics Specialist Eye Centre under our Club signature project "HOPE IN SIGHT", that was initiated by our Club Past President, the current District 3310 Assistant Governor Group 13, Eliza Goh. They are: To-date a total of 27 women have had their lives changed. Thank you very much EyeMedics Specialist Eye Centre - Dr Terrence Soong, Celestina Chin, and Dr Lisa Tan who has been performing all the free cataract surgeries since World Sight Day in October 2022. 29 LUSTRE 2022-23 | ISSUE 2 PROJECT REAL VISIT TO TENOM 7 OCTOBER 2022 SK Mandalom Lama, nearest to PPD. This school has a total of 98 pupils. SK Gumisi. This school has a total of 135 pupils. This school which is an hour's drive outside of Tenom town has just suffered from a very bad and the school library was empty of books as it was partially submerged during the floodings. SK Simpang Tenom. This school has 85 pupils attending it. The school is well prepared for Project REAL, and after the briefing, our REAL team were hosted to a lovely home cooked meal with durians SK Pangi – the school has 67 pupils attending it. The team was unable to visit the school but was able to to discuss about the project with Mr. Petrus Bin Tanggau, principal of the school. The club's Project REAL team consisting of our President Datuk Hjh Aminah Ambrose, Project REAL Chair/Club Community Service Director Tulip Noorazyze and REAL committee volunteer Soh Yuen Mee, took, two and half hour drive Tenom district. The purpose of the trip was to visit the schools under Project REAL RY2022/23 and to brief them on what the project entails, as well as to pay a visit to Tenom's Pejabat Pendidikan Daerah (PPD). Schools visited were : PROJECT REAL (RURAL-FOCUSED ENGLISH FOR ALL)


30 LUSTRE 2022-23 | ISSUE 2 President Datuk Aminah Ambrose and Club CommunityService Director/Project REAL Chair Tulip Noorazyze accompanied by Kudat's School Improvement Specialist Coach (SISC) Dr Azlan Shafie Abdullah @ Raymond Majumah from the Kudat Education Department to visit four (4) schoolsthat were earmarked for Project REAL. The schools are SJK(C) St Peter, SK Tiga Papan, SRK Lok Yuk Tamalang and Parapat Darat. All four schools have all allocated a space for the setup of an English Corner already planning to paint their respective allocated spaces to brighten it up, beforet he respective schools' representatives collect the necessary materials from our Club, to set up the Corner based on our Club's Project REAL template. Club Community Service Director/Project REAL Chair Tulip Noorazyze, accompanied by REAL Committee volunteer Irene Chan and Marianne Naru Kiob visited the primary schools in Keningau for Project Real. The schools are SK Pangas, SK Liau Apin Apin, SJK(C) Cheng Ming and SK Binuwou. 31 LUSTRE 2022-23 | ISSUE 2 PROJECT REAL VISIT TO KUARA PENYU 18 OCTOBER 2022 SK Menunggang SK Mansud SK Barangkok SK Melikai Our Project REAL Chair/Club Community Service Director Tulip Noorazyze, accompanied by Project REAL committee volunteers Datin Phyllis Lo and Soh Yuen Mee took a road trip to Kuala Penyu, a distance of about 105km from Kota Kinabalu. The team's mission was to visit the four elementary schools in Kuala Penyu that are earmarked for Project REAL RY2022/23, to discuss with the school Principals and English panels on their commitment to the project and to view the space assigned for REAL's English corner in each school. The four schools are:- Our REAL team were met by the Kuala Penyu SISC (School Improvement Specialist Coach) Puan Syadwani Binti Okal, who helped to coordinate the team's visit to all four schools. They also visited the District Education Department, and met with the Pegawai Pendidikan Daerah (PPD) Dr. Suntik Tuin, his Timbalan PPD Sektor Perancangan Puan Monica Sinin, along with the Timbalan PPD Sektor Pengurusan Encik Kipli Gitam.

RCKK Pearl was one of the six recipients of Sabah's Education Department (JPN) award for BEST STRATEGIC PARTNER of JPN for our PROJECT REAL (Rural focus English for All). Our Club President Datuk Hjh Aminah Ambrose accepted the award at Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC) during JPN's Majlis Perutusan Akhir Tahun Pengarah Jabatan Pendidikan Negeri Sabah - the Pengarah being Datuk Tah Nia Binti Haji Jaman. The five other recipients were Sabah Credit Corporation, Petronas, Eco Yap, FINCO (Financial Industry Collective Outreach) and Tuan Haji Arif Tun Sakaran. Project REAL is the brainchild of our Past President Datuk Hjh Noni Said, who initiated this project during her term in RY2016-2017. The objective is to help rural children bridge the gap of education with their urban counter part through elevating their English language proficiency. English language proficiency would also help these children later in their lives when they go for higher education or seek employment. Project REAL Chairperson, our Club Community Service Director Tulip Noorazyze has worked tirelessly over the years since REAL's inception to ensure its success. The team works with the Education Department to select rural elementary schools and coordinate with District Education Officers, School Improvement Specialist Coach and all the Guru Besar of the selected schools. This also includes quarterly meetings with all involved to check the progress/ implementation of REAL. 40 Kg Nampasan Lama - the team had a discussion with the village's AJK Perpaipan on how to build the water catchment, the laying and connecting of water pipes, as well as placement of water tank, as all the necessary materials to build a bigger water catchment have already arrived at the site - new water tank/pipings/fittings. Kg Monggis - the trio met with the Pengerusi of JPKK Encik Hanif Matamin to confirm the Kampung's requirements and works to be carried out for their water needs. Kg. Tarawas - for this kampung, WASH team did a two hour reconnaissance to their current water catchment area to assess what works need to be done and explain to their Kampong's AJK on how to solve the clogging problems at this water catchment. The Wash team headed by WASH Committee Chairperson PP Datuk Suzannah Liaw and WASH Treasurer Catherine Liew and PP Wong Chu Lai from RC Likas Bay technical team visited 3 villages as part of the ongoing WASH project. The following are the villages and purposes of visit : For WASH RY2022/23, Kg. Tarawas and Kg Monggis are among the 6 villages that will be provided with new pipings to replace their existing rusty and leaky ones. 42 This year we were able to bring the spirit of Christmas cheer to brighten the little patients' day at Likas Women & Childrens Hospital. The Club's team of volunteers led by Club President Datuk Hjh Aminah Ambrose and our Assistant Governor Group 13 Kapitan Eliza Goh, along with KTYS Rotaractors gathered at the Hospital's Bilik Persidangan Pusat Perubatan Nuklear & Radioterapi on the 7th floor to meet the children with their parents. They enjoyed a fun Magic Show and Rotactors from Kolej Technology Yayasan Sabah organized colouring, origami and a fishing game for the children. The club prepared Christmas gift packs for 200 children which included colouring books, stationery, toys and snacks. Also included were 250 bars of chocolates from COCOA KINGDOM, our ever-kind Christmas chocolate sponsor. 48 Rotary Global Grant Project Gift of Sight 2.0 Sabah, Cataract Campaignon the 30th October 2022 for the public in Tuaran was held at the multi purpose hall of SJK (C) Chen Sin school, was led by RC Kota Kinabalu Mandarin. 38 Rotarians and their spouses volunteered from RC Kota Kinabalu Mandarin , RC Likas Bay, RC Kota Kinabalu,RC Kota Kinabalu Pearl, RC Luyang, RC Tanjung Aru and RC Kota Kinabalu Sutera A total of 375 patients were registered, 130 were referred to QEH 1, 67 pairs of reading glasses were distributed to patients after being checked by volunteer Optometrist. Our Club's participation was coordinated by our Club Community Service Director Tulip Noorazyze, and the team of Pearl volunteers were PP Datuk Suzannah Liaw, Club Public Image Chair Norma Apines, Club SAA Caroline Paxton and member Datin Rocy Chong. There were also a team of Cataract Finders - 19 volunteers from KPJ Hospital, and another 8 volunteers from JMC, who performed the preliminary eye checkup before referring the patients to the onsite Rotarian doctors. 49 Rotary Global Grant ProjectGift of Sight 2.0 Sabah, CataractCampaign took place at Dewan Hakka Kudat, from 8.30am till 12.30pm, on 13 November 2022 (Sunday). Our Club was the host club and all six Clubs participated in this event RCKK Pearl, RC Likas Bay, RC Kota Kinabalu Mandarin, RC Luyang, RC Kinabalu Sutera and RC Tg Aru. From our Club, our President Datuk Hjh Aminah, our Club Community Service Director Tulip Noorazyze, who is also the coordinator for this Kudat eye-screening program, Club President Elect Rosie Chong and Club Secretary Hanna Ghani-Loh, went ahead to Kudat on 12/11/22, a day before the event, to organise the venue at Dewan Hakka Kudat. They were joined by RC Likas Bay members, PDG Philip Chong, Dr Asohan and PP Arius Yu. For this Kudat cataract campaign a total of 29 Rotarians including from our club - PP Datuk Suzannah Liaw, Club Membership Chair Catherine Liew, Past Club Treasurer Datin Phyllis Lo, and Community Service committee member Irene Chan made the 187.4km journey to Kudat. Altogether, 344 patients were registered and given free eye screenings by Cataract Finder volunteers from KPJ Hospital (21 volunteers) and JMC Hospital (7 volunteers), out of which 121 of these patients were referred for further treatment at Kudat hospital. A total of 138 pairs of reading glasses were given to patients who needed them. Kudat Hospital Optometrist Puan Crestiani Laisis also participated in this program, and she was joined by two of her hospital staff.
