L U S T R E | JULY 2018 Club of Kota Kinabalu Pearl

July has been an eventful month and a great way to kick start the new Rotary year. We started our first meeting with a
Hari Raya celebration’s fellowship, served with sumptuous food and cookies, as well as introducing the new members of the
Board of Directors (BOD) 2018/2019.

We also renewed our Sisterhood Pact with our sister club, Rotary Club of Meycauayan Jewels, Bulacan, Philippines and our
Friendship Pact with Rotary Club of Taipei, Taiwan for another 2 years. Well done to the International Service Committee for
organizing the event and attending to the delegates of the 2 clubs as well as delegates from our sister club, Rotary Club of
Cebu Gloria Maris, Philippines during their recent visit.

Our 4th Installation Night was succesfully and wonderfully held on 18 July, 2018. I am grateful for the dedication and effort
poured by our Installation Night working committee into ensuring the event was a success. The new BOD was officially
installed in the presence of our Deputy Chief Minister cum Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment, Yang Berhormat
Madam Christina Liew and our sponsors, Pearls, Rotarians, family and guests. We were fortunate to have such a beautiful
entertainment line up from the talented dancers to Sabah’s very own songstress, Mia Palencia, together with the Derwent
Valley Concert Band, all the way from Tasmania, Australia, as the highlight of our entertainment for the evening.

Only 2 days after our Installation Night, our Project REAL team headed North to Kota Marudu with the Australian High
Commission (AHC) representatives, Deputy High Commissioner, Mr Michael Growder and his First Secretary, Ms Jane Bartlett,
to launch Project REAL in 2 more schools, SK Ongkilan and SK Kota Marudu II. The expansion of the Project was made possible
with the grant received from the AHC and we will be launching in 2 more schools in Pitas under the same collaboration.

On 23 July, 2018, we welcomed our new District Governor, Mr Henry Tan, hailing from the Rotary Club of Singapore West. He
was here for his official visit to 4 clubs in Kota Kinabalu in which RCKK Pearl was the first to host him. I am very happy to share
that it was a successful visit and DG expressed his highest appreciation and gratitude for the presentation and warm welcome
from all Pearls. This is a great start to our relationship with DG Henry.

We will be focusing on leadership development, member relationship and engagements this term. We have also been in
discussion with other leaders in our group under the purview of Assistant Governor Lee Swi Heng to conduct joint meetings and
fellowships to further increase camaraderie amongst Rotarians not just within the Club but with other Rotary Clubs as well. We
will sponsor another school for early development of Interactors and Rotaractors. I would like to invite all of you – fellow Pearls
– to be part of any one of the subcommittees led by its respective Directors and Chairs and be part of what makes this Club
great.

A club is only as strong as its members and with your continuous support and dedication, and having such a great start to
the term, I am optimistic that Pearls will continue to Be The Inspiration to the community.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Datuk Dr. Hjh. Tarsiah TZ Taman
President RCKK Pearl 2018/2019

District Governor Henry Tan’s Visit and New Member Induction | 2nd
Club Meeting| 23rd July 2018

RCKK Pearl welcomed the District Governor Henry Tan, of
Rotary Club of Singapore West, who was on his official
visit to the Club on 23rd July. During his visit he joined in
the Board of Directors’ meeting and later the Club’s
meeting. Vice President Eliza Goh warmly welcomed DG
Henry and thereafter, he gave his address. He
emphasized the importance of the Rotary Foundation.
Every club’s contribution can be channeled back to the
District to be disbursed back to the clubs to fund club
projects, for example, RCKK Pearl’s Project REAL.

DG Henry encouraged Rotarians to build fellowship and

friendship, and then after that go on to build business networks. He Welcoming DG Henry Tan at the KKIA
said that his mission as a District Governor this year is to promote the

fundamentals of Rotary, which are fellowship and friendship. He

believes that friends are important so that we may enjoy our lives everyday, especially at (his) age. DG Henry

posed a question to the members, whether the club is prepared for change, to ensure that the club is

relevant 10 years down the road. He advised that every

club should have a leadership program. The club

should encourage the old and the young members to

evolve together to move towards what is relevant. The

younger members need to accommodate the older

members. DG Henry expressed his heartfelt thanks for

the warm welcome extended by the Pearls and

congratulated the club on its achievements.

Thereafter, the
meeting continued
with the new
members’
induction. The new members’ respective sponsors were invited to give an
introduction of the new members. VP Eliza conducted the induction and
the 4 members, namely Datin Rocy Chong, Carmen L Pilcher, Frida Farah
Bungga and Nicole Lee, were inducted as the new members of RCKK Pearl.
To the new members, welcome to the club!

During the sunshine fund fine session, DG Henry generously contributed to 3310 District Governor Henry Tan
the sunshine box when he was fined for being more handsome in real life
than in photographs! It was a laugh out loud moment for the Pearls. DG
Henry was presented with the beautiful RCKK Pearl handmade native
necklace as a memento. The sunshine fund collection was RM197.00 and
members attendance was at 65.45%, with 4 guests attending.

The Guide to Daily Living

Before doing the things we want to do, consider first, the precept of the guide. Ask ourselves 4
questions and act upon them:
First: Have I spent some time in self-examination?
Second: Have I spent quality time with my family?
Third: Have I given my best to my work?
Fourth: Have I given some time to someone near and far?
The first question prompts us to evaluate ourselves and our ability to serve.
The second question reinforces our commitment to the family – our “Intimate Community of Life and
Love”.
The third question requests us to commit ourselves to work excellence and the practice of high
ethical standards.
The fourth question reminds us of our duty to Lend a Hand, rendering compassionate service and
world peace.
The Guide, in fact encompasses the 4 parts of the Object of Rotary.

THE ROTARY GUIDING PRINCIPLES

Object of Rotary

The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy
enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

• FIRST: The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;
• SECOND: High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the

worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as
an opportunity to serve society;
• THIRD: The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal, business,
and community life;
• FOURTH: The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace
through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of
service.
