RCKK Pearl 13th Club Meeting & 2nd Club Assembly | 9th January
RCKK Pearl had its 2nd Club Assembly on 9th January. President
Datuk Suzannah shared with the members our club’s focus and
achievements to date. From June to November 2017, the club
successfully completed the implementation of Project REAL at 3
schools, ie, SK Pomotodon, SK Mandalipau and SK Rugading.
Project REAL is RCKK Pearl’s signature project. The next phase will
be at schools in Pitas and Kota Marudu.
For the Medical Outreach for Women and Girls project, RCKK Pearl
worked together with our partner, the Lembaga Penduduk dan
Pembangunan Keluarga Negara (LPPKN) (National Population and
Family Development Board) and carried out the project at Kota
L-R: Rtn Hazel, Rtn Hanna, Rtn Marudu, Kg Likas and Beaufort in 2017. The club has also rendered
Valerie and Rtn Sylma aid and assistance to victims of natural disasters. The Youth Service
team conducted an Eye Brow Grooming workshop for the Kolej
Teknikal Yayasan Sabah Rotaractors in October 2017 and were involved in the SINDEX briefing at schools in Ranau
and Kundasang in November 2017.
The Vocational Service team organized a Google Workshop in November and a visit to the Sabah State Archives in
December. In January, 2 workshops were organized, ie the Social Etiquette workshop conducted by President
Datuk Suzannah herself and Corporate Grooming workshop by Image Consultant, Rtn Doris Lim.

RCKK Pearl 14th Club Meeting | 23rd January
President Datuk Suzannah Liaw welcomed all the members
and guests to the club’s 14th meeting. She then invited Past
Assistant Governor (PAG) Emily Chong of Rotary Club of
Kinabalu Sutera (RCKS) to share about the upcoming Rotary
Charity Dinner. The Charity Dinner will be held on 29th April
2018 and the beneficiaries of the fundraising are the Polio
Plus Fund, Persatuan SLE Malaysia (Sandakan Chapter) and
other local community projects.
Puan Hajah Azizah Itam
SLE stands for Systematic Lupus Erythematosus and is an
autoimmune disease characterized by acute and chronic
inflammation of the tissues of the body. It was saddening
to note that about 90% of SLE sufferers are women while
about 10% are men and children.
PAG Emily appealed to all Pearls to assist in the sale of the
tickets for the Charity Dinner which are at
RM1,000.00/table. The Organisers aim to raise
RM120,000.00 in total from the ticket sales. Club President
President Datuk Suzannah presenting a token Datuk Suzannah assured her that Pearls will give our
of appreciation to Azizah Itam support. The RCKS President, Datin Betty, was also present at
the meeting. PAG Emily Chong
Puan Hajah Azizah Itam was invited as the speaker for the day. She gave a
talk on The Importance of An Emcee. Azizah Itam was a popular radio
presenter in the 70s. She served in RTM as a radio and TV producer between
1971 and 2005. After retiring, she continued to serve as Radio News Editor.
Azizah said that an emcee should know the proper protocol especially for
official functions, must have a prepared script, should attend event meetings
or rehearsals, must be able to adapt to any given situation and must keep
abreast with the current news. An emcee should not fight with the
organisers, she quipped. The audience was tickled when Azizah shared the
do’s and don’ts of an emcee.

Vocational Service | Corporate Grooming and Social Etiquette &
Formal Dining Workshop | 20th January
On 20th January 2018, the Vocational Service
Committee organised a half-day workshop on
Grooming and Etiquette conducted by Pearls’ very
own members, Rtn Doris Lim, as the first speaker with
the topic Corporate Grooming - Dressing for the
Female Executive and by RCKK Pearl President, Datuk
Suzannah Liaw as the second speaker, on Social
Etiquette and Formal Dining.
Rtn Doris shared with the participants some of her pearls
of wisdom. She said that grooming is all about looking
your best at any age and as a professional you are to
dress like one. Your outfit can be a dress, blouse and skirt
or a smart pantsuit, and have a jacket when you must. To
look professional, having light makeup is important and
your hair should be groomed, not in a college ponytail!
The participants enjoyed a 4-course Western meal while
learning about formal table setting and cutlery
etiquette from President Datuk Suzannah. She also
covered topics such as Social Conversation – the dos
and don’ts of conversation - and Social Behaviour.
The Pearls and guests were very fortunate to have the
professional speakers impart their knowledge that day.
Before the end of the workshop, VP Tulip gave a word of
thanks to President Datuk Suzannah and Rtn Doris, while
Rtn Adora presented the speakers each with a beautiful
token of appreciation.

Rotary Founder: Paul Harris
Paul Harris founded Rotary International on the 23rd of
February 1905, nearly one century ago.
However, he was not the first president of a Rotary
club. There is an easy explanation to this apparent
contradiction. Although Paul Harris was the founder
and organizer of the first Rotary club in Chicago in
1905, the man selected to be the first president was
one of the other founding members, Silvester Schiele.
By the year 1910 there were 16 Rotary clubs, which linked up as an organization
called the National Association of Rotary Clubs. Two years later the name was
changed to the International Association of Rotary Clubs, as Rotary was
organized in Winnipeg, Canada and then in England, Ireland and Scotland. In
1933 the name was changed to Rotary International.
When the first organization of Rotary clubs, the National Association of Rotary
Clubs, was created in 1910, Paul Harris was selected as its first president. He
served for two years from 1910 to 1912. Thus the founder of the Rotary idea,
who declined to be the president of the first Rotary club, became the first
president of Rotary International.
Those Rotarians who are interested in further literature about Paul Harris and
the history of Rotary International will enjoy visiting the following sites:

The Guide to Daily Living
Before doing the things we want to do, consider first, the precept of the guide. Ask ourselves 4
questions and act upon them:
First: Have I spent some time in self-examination?
Second: Have I spent quality time with my family?
Third: Have I given my best to my work?
Fourth: Have I given some time to someone near and far?
The first question prompts us to evaluate ourselves and our ability to serve.
The second question reinforces our commitment to the family – our “Intimate Community of Life and
Love”.
The third question requests us to commit ourselves to work excellence and the practice of high
ethical standards.
The fourth question reminds us of our duty to Lend a Hand, rendering compassionate service and
world peace.
The Guide, in fact encompasses the 4 parts of the Object of Rotary.
THE ROTARY GUIDING PRINCIPLES
Object of Rotary
The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of
worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:
• FIRST: The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;
• SECOND: High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of
the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s
occupation as an opportunity to serve society;
• THIRD: The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal,
business, and community life;
• FOURTH: The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and
peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united
in the ideal of service.
19
