L U S T R E | AUGUST | SEPTEMBER 2018 Club of Kota Kinabalu Pearl
Our fellow Pearl, Rtn Soo Yuen Mee, also shared her experience at the 2017 Rotary International Convention in Atlanta,
Georgia. Hope our Pearls are enticed and will take the opportunity for the next RI Convention to be held at Hamburg,
Germany 1-5 June, 2019. The early bird registration discount is still on-going until 15 December 2018 on the RI Convention
website.
We had also celebrated the birthdays of Pearls born in the month of July and August, and celebrated the Hari Raya Haji or
Eid Al-Adha festivities. Eid Al-Adha is known as the Festival of Sacrifice and marks an auspicious event for Muslims, the end
of the annual pilgrimage to Mecca or Haj. This year our Pearl member/Public Relations Director, Rtn Chenderamata Hj
Sinteh, was in Mecca to perform her Haj. Congratulations, Hajjah Chenderamata!
More congratulations are in order this month as we have 10 more Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) graduates from the
recent 2 day training held on the 25th and 26th August 2018. Well done to IPP Rtn Datuk Suzannah, President Elect Datuk Dr
Sharifah Habsah, VP Rtn Eliza, Rtn Rosie, Rtn Majella, Rtn Nicole, Rtn Yvonne, Rtn Irene, Rtn Caroline and Rtn Carmen. I
hope that more Pearls will take part in future RLIs as it is a great opportunity to bond with our fellow Rotarians as well as
expand our knowledge about Rotary, club matters and handling some related issues.
We also had a eUsahawan training with some 20 Pearl members together with our Rotaractors and representatives from
Kolej Teknikal Yayasan Sabah. This is one of the initiatives from the Sabah Women Advisory Council (MPWS) and MDEC to
increase digital knowledge amongst existing and aspiring entrepreneurs. We definitely had a lot of fun learning about
utilizing Facebook, Whatsapp and Instagram for our business(es) and creating beautiful and fun images to add interest to
our social media presence. Our trainer, Puan Wan Raizah, imparted a lot of useful knowledge and tips that I am sure were
beneficial to all the members present.
September had a sumptuous beginning with a string of chocolate-y treats from our speaker, Mr Siaw, of Cocoa Kingdom.
I’m sure our Pearls now are more aware of the many benefits of cocoa products and the quality of our very own home
grown cocoa. I heard we managed to raise more funds for our Sunshine Fund that day through an impromptu auction of Mr
Siaw’s premium chocolates!
We had also sponsored 2 of our Interactors and a teacher from SMK Perempuan Likas to yet another RYLA experience in
Miri. This time around, we had 2 more Interactors.
In our following meeting, our very own Pearl, Rtn Caroline, shared with us why she is passionate about Kangen water. Her
presentation and demonstration was eye opening! There were many advantages to drinking alkaline water and we must
also be wary of the quality of materials used in the various water filters in the market. Thank you Caroline for a wonderful
session! I look forward to hearing more Pearls share about themselves, their work and passions with us in future meetings.
I believe this is a great way for us to learn more about each other.
It was also nice to see so many Pearls and guests at our 3rd Anniversary Celebration on the 22nd September at our dear VP
Eliza’s Zara’s Boutique Hotel. Everyone looked so fancy with the many different hats for such a lovely high tea event. AG
Lee Swi Heng and PDG Phillip Chong had a wonderful time with all of us as well.
I would like to take this opportunity to announce some wonderful news. We have been awarded yet another grant from
JHEWA amounting to RM15,000 for the Youth Leadership Training Programme for both our Interactors and our Rotaractors.
This is in addition to the RM10,000 grant for the REAL project this year. I hope the training programmes under our
Vocational Service Committee in tandem with our Youth Service Committee, will inspire and add value to our youths,
bringing out the leaders in them.
Looking forward for another wonderful month in October.
Sincerely,
Datuk Dr. Hjh. Tarsiah TZ Taman

During our 6th club meeting, the speaker for the day was
our own Rtn Caroline Paxton. She is a Kangen Water
Specialist. She shared with us how Kangen Water made a
difference in her life and health as well as for her family.
She shares “Water is the very foundation for life. It makes
up about 75% of your body. Critical for the transportation
and absorption of nutrients as well as for elimination of
waste, water cannot be overlooked if you intend to
experience vibrant health. Restructured, ionized alkaline
water aka Kangen Water is today's medical
gamechanger. Kangen Water provides a way to flush
acidic wastes from your body, neutralize free radicals, VP Eliza Goh presenting a token of appreciation

The Guide to Daily Living
Before doing the things we want to do, consider first, the precept of the guide. Ask ourselves
4 questions and act upon them:
First: Have I spent some time in self-examination?
Second: Have I spent quality time with my family?
Third: Have I given my best to my work?
Fourth: Have I given some time to someone near and far?
The first question prompts us to evaluate ourselves and our ability to
serve.
The second question reinforces our commitment to the family – our
“Intimate Community of Life and Love”.
The third question requests us to commit ourselves to work excellence and the practice of
high ethical standards.
The fourth question reminds us of our duty to Lend a Hand, rendering compassionate service
and world peace.
The Guide, in fact encompasses the 4 parts of the Object of Rotary.

TAKE TIME TO SERVE
“The time we take to serve those who need us can be the
turning point, not only in their lives but also in our own.”
1980-81 RI President Rolf Klarich
THE ROTARIAN, July 1980
THE ROTARY GUIDING PRINCIPLES
Object of Rotary
The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis
of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:
• FIRST: The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;
• SECOND: High ethical standards in business and professions; the
recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying
of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society;
• THIRD: The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal,
business, and community life;
• FOURTH: The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and
peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons
united in the ideal of service.
