TTThhheeeSSSuuunnn all about the sun A star that holds the solar system together, keeping everything in its orbit. The light of daytime comes from the sun. why can't we live without the sun? heat from the sun makes earth warm without the light from the sun, there would be no plants or animals, and therefore, no food and we wouldn't exist. 1

2 mmmeeerrrcccuuurrryyy structure and surface mercury is the smallest planet in our solar system. it is small and rocky. Mercury has a solid, cratered surface time on mercury a day on mercury lasts 59 earth days. mercury's neighbors mercury does not have any moon. mercury is the closest planet to the sun.

3 structure of surface venus is the hottest planet in our solar system. the surface is a rusty color. venus has an active surface, including volcanoes! venus spins the opposite direction of earth and most other planets venus time on venus a day on venus lasts 243 earth days venus's neighbors venus does not have any moons. venus is the second planet from the sun.

4 earth structure of surface the only planet that supports life. has a solid and active surface with mountains, valleys, canyons, plains time on earth a day on earth lasts a little under 24 hours. one year on earth lasts 365.25 days. earth's neighbors earth has just one moon. earth has lots of spacecraft watching it.

5 mars structure of surface mars has an active atmosphere surface of the planet is not active. its volcanoes are dead. time on mars one day on mars lasts 24.6 hours. it is just a litter longer than a day on earth. mars' neighbors mars has two moons; pheobos and deimos. earth and jupiter are mars' neighboring planets.

6 jjjuuupppiiittteeerrr structure of surface jupiter is the biggest planet in our solar system. jupiter has a very thick atmosphere. jupiter has rings, but they're very hard to see it is covered in swirling cloud stripes time on jupiter one day on jupiter goes by in just 10 hours. jupiter's neighbors Jupiter has 80 confirmed moons. mars and Saturn are Jupiter's neighboring planets.

sssaaatttuuurrrnnn structure of surface saturn has a thick atmosphere. saturn has a lovely set of seven main rings with spaces between them. the rings are made of groups of tiny ringlet time on saturn one day on saturn goes by in just 10.7 hours. saturn's neighbors Saturn has 145 moons that we know of so far. Jupiter and Uranus are Saturn's neighboring planets 7

uuurrraaannnuuusss structure and surface uranus is surrounded by a set of 13 rings. uranus is an ice giant. uranus is the only planet that spins on its side. uranus spins the opposite direction as earth and most other planets. time on uranus one day on uranus lasts a little over 17 hours. uranus' neighbors uranus has 27 known moons. saturn and neptune are uranus' neighboring planets. 8

nnneeeppptttuuunnneee structure of surface neptune is encircled by six rings. neptune is an ice giant. neptune has a thick, windy atmosphere. last of the planets in our solar system. time on neptune one day on neptune goes by in 16 hours. it takes 165 earth years to go around once. neptune's neighbors neptune has 14 moons uranus is neptune's only neigh-boring planet. 9

10 Planets

glossary Proxima centauri: Greenhouse: Telescope: A device used to observe distant objects by their emission, absorption, or reflection of electromagnetic radiation. Spacecraft: A vehicle or device designed for travel or operation outside the earth's atmosphere. Volcanoes: An opening in a planet or moon's crust through which molten rock and gases trapped under the surface. Atmosphere: A layers of gases that envelop a planet, and is held in place by the gravity of the planetary body. A small , low mass star located 4.2465 light-years away from the sun A process that occurs when gases in Earth's atmosphere trap the Sun's heat 11
