LITERACY CORNER

SUPPORTING STUDENTS WITH READING NEEDS

Route to Reading: Be Your Child’s Tour Guide

Sitting with your child every day and having them read to you will continue to build
their confidence. Here are 4 tips to use when reading with your child.

1. LISTEN: Notice speech sounds, letters, words, or ideas that seem hard.
2. LOOK: Watch for skills or tasks that seem difficulty
3. WAIT: Give time to self correct, then provide a hint if needed.
4. ENCOURAGE: Praise and reassure as you talk about the book or activity.

Healthy Habits: How can I help my child form HEALTH CORNER
healthy habits?

As a parent, you are the biggest influence in shaping your child’s eating and drinking habits. Here are a few things you
can do to at home to help.

1. Be a role model: You do not need to be an expert, just get up, move and show your children how much they can
have by being active. Go for a walk around your neighborhood, play a game together, and indulge in more fruits and
vegetables.
2. Talk about being healthy: Take time to talk and have a conversation about how certain foods help you stay
healthy, or how walking can help you feel better. When your child opts for an unhealthy snack ask them how they
think it’ll make them feel and whether it’ll fuel their body with the right amount of energy. Use comments like “Great
choice” or “Let’s walk 5 more minutes to make us stronger.”
3. Make sure your child gets enough sleep: Getting enough sleep can improve your child’s mental, emotional, and
physical health. Not getting enough sleep may lead to many health issues to include obesity.
4. Promote good health beyond your family: Other adults play a role in your child’s life, too. Share your ideas and
healthy habits with them and encourage a healthy lifestyle for all. .
