Dear Parent/Guardian,

Summer provides a wonderful opportunity for students and families to enjoy reading great
books together! Reading outside of the classroom is critical for maintaining and expanding a
child’s literacy skills, especially over the extended summer break. Just like other skills your
children are learning, reading needs to be practiced every day to build strong vocabulary, critical
thinking, and comprehension skills.

Our schools will be sending home a Project Summer Read packet containing a vast selection of
suggested reading materials and resources to assist you. The packet also includes Internet
resources to access interactive books, ebooks, and audio books from sites such as Raz Kids,
SORA, Tumblebooks, and Bookflix.

Here are some suggestions on making reading a natural fit for summer:
 Make reading a part of your family’s daily routine by setting aside some time to read
every day!
 Schedule time to visit the library. Included in our summer packet is suggested reading
and a calendar of amazing events from the White Plains Public Library.
 Help your children find books about things they are interested in. Expose them to
different authors, characters, and genres.
 Read to your children, let them read to you. Talk to your children about what they are
reading and what they liked about the book or how they would change the ending.
 Make a trip to the bookstore on occasion for fun.

I hope that your family will make reading a shared pleasure this summer. Being an avid reader
is the surest path to academic success and to learning about the world around you!

¡El verano brinda una maravillosa oportunidad para que los estudiantes y las familias disfruten leyendo
buenos libros juntos! Leer fuera del aula es fundamental para mantener y ampliar las habilidades de
alfabetización de un niño, especialmente durante las largas vacaciones de verano. Al igual que otras
habilidades que sus hijos están aprendiendo, la lectura debe practicarse todos los días para desarrollar un
vocabulario fuerte, pensamiento crítico y habilidades de comprensión.

Nuestras escuelas enviarán a casa un paquete de Project Summer Read que contiene una amplia selección
de materiales y recursos de lectura sugeridos para ayudarle. El paquete también incluye recursos de
Internet para acceder a libros interactivos, libros electrónicos y audiolibros de sitios como Raz Kids,
SORA, Tumblebooks y Bookflix.
