The legacy of the Philippine Special Forces stands as a testament to courage, resilience the unit, and unwavering dedication. Since of inception, its elite warriors have played a vital role in safeguarding the nation, confronting numerous challenges with valor and commitment. On October 21, 1986, a significant transformation occurred within the Philippine military when the Riverine Battalion was integrated into the Home Defense Forces Group. This integration not only expanded the unit's mission capabilities but also improved mobility, logistical support, and shoreline defense in critical regions.Under the leadership of Group Commander Colonel Jose C. Lapus, efforts to restore professionalism within the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) took center stage. His focus on morale and discipline led to the renaming of the unit to the Special Forces Group (Airborne) on April 16, 1988, and just a year later, it was be elevated to the Special Forces Regiment (Airborne).Despite these advancements, the challenges facing the AFP remained significant. By 1987, the communist New People's Army (NPA) had reached a peak strength of 25,000 fighters across 72 guerrilla fronts. In response, the AFP launched Oplan Lambat Bitag, a systematic counter-insurgency strategy designed to clear, hold, and develop conflict-ridden areas. The Special Forces played a crucial role in this national effort. A significant engagement occurred on the island of Negros, where Captain Arturo Ortiz led a bold raid on an NPA encampment in the hills of Murcia, an act of bravery that earned him the prestigious Medal for Valor. Such actions exemplified the courage that defines the Special Forces. Beyond combat, the Special Forces have continually shown its dedication to humanitarian efforts. In 1990, after a devastating earthquake and the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo, the 18th Special Forces Company took the lead on search and rescue missions, saving hundreds of lives in the disaster's aftermath.Their versatility demonstrated their commitment not only to military operations but also to serving the community in times of need. As the communist insurgency began to decline, new threats emerged, including military adventurism and terrorism, particularly with the rise of groups such as Abu Sayyaf. The Special Forces adapted to these evolving challenges by collaborating closely with American counterparts after the September 11, 2001 attacks to refine counter-terrorism strategies, especially in the southern Philippines. For decades, the Philippine Special Forces have been a pillar of strength and resilience. Through war, peace, disaster, and change, they have remained silent professionals—always prepared for the next mission. Their journey showcases a legacy of valor, discipline, and an enduring commitment to the nation. As we honor the legacy of our retired Special Forces, we recognize their contributions not only as warriors but as guardians of peace and supporters of humanitarian efforts. Their story is one of greatness—born in battle, forged in discipline, and destined to inspire future generations to uphold the ideals of service and sacrifice. The legacy of the Philippine Special Forces is just beginning to unfold, and it will undoubtedly continue to inspire and guide those who follow in their footsteps.Honoring the Legacy of Our Retired Special ForcesFeature Articles5

“His unit was the blocking force,” ayon sa isang retiradong heneral habang isinasalaysay ang isa pang kabanata ng engkwentro. “We were the main effort. We thought the enemy would engage us because they were a big force...Instead, they retreated toward Granfil’s position. They were like sitting ducks because Granfil and his men had the advantage. Despite the big number of the enemy, Granfil and his CHDF did not panic. They even ran out of ammo. But Granfil was able to use a mortar tube although it had no bipod and no base plate—he improvised a wooden support and just estimated the trajectory of the shells—to devastating effect. To top it all, Granfil also saved and dragged several of his men to safety.

Closing Remarks“Once an SF, always an SF: The Old meets the Young”Secretary Raffy Alunan September 14, 2024 at AFPCOC Our fellowships are typically rowdy when we come together to relax and relieve accumulated stress. Call it controlled chaos. Fellowships are never complete without reminiscing about old times, dangerous times, and miraculous times; some new stories to tell; and some lessons learned. Tell my story about Dec.'89. Our fellowships are also valuable networking opportunities offering pathways to personal growth and continued service beyond the uniform. More importantly, our linkages provide a civil-military bridge that allow us to leverage our special forces ethos of performing even the simplest routines extraordinarily well, our leadership, our unique and diverse skills, discipline, and experience in whatever environments we may find ourselves in. The Special Forces Airborne family is a vital component of the larger professional military community - both active and retired, male and female, regulars and reserves. Together, we stand as the unwavering backbone of our nation's defense and security, a force forged in discipline, honor, and sacrifice. With every dedicated heartbeat, we stand ready wherever we may be to deter, defend, and defeat if need be imminent threats to our homeland's safety, security, and survival. We are silent professionals who beam our skill, virtue, courage and determination to our people in the face of adversity. Through my civil-military lens, the SFA community's tireless vigilance and unparalleled dedication is not just about being a resolute defender of our Republic, it is the very heart that beats within Inang Bayan! We form part of the backbone that sustains our freedom, independence, and democratic ways to secure the future of generations to come. Because of our training, exposure and experience, we are the best prepared to face and deal with the volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity shaking our world today. Our security situation here on our land and out there in our EEZ, and that of the Indo-Pacific region are drawing us closer to a conflict we don't want. The rising risk is forcing us to prepare for the worst. While the government is focused on national defense through a long-delayed military buildup, our civil defense remains unattended. This is a serious compelling condition and it's tailor-made for our SF community to grab the bull by the horns. The SF chapters that Gen Lincs is tirelessly trying to inspire, grow, and sustain; the Reserve Force Development strategy that Gen Joe, Gen PJ Bondoc and Capt Astro Del Castillo are influencing in the corridors of power; and the template for Community-based safety, security, survival that I worked on, are some initiatives being undertaken to get us ready to rumble. The bugles are mustering us to triple time on our preparations. May I request all those who are still standing and capable of jumping out of a perfectly good aircraft, to drink to our founder and first commander, PFVR, who constantly reminded us of these nine words that if consistently pursued by the nation will change our lives forever: Unity, solidarity, teamwork, care, share, dare, reform, perform, transform. And so we shall now raise our bottles or glasses for FVR, Gen Joe and the SF community. Please follow my commands: Stand up, get ready, hook up, and check static lines, check equipment, Standby, Go! Thank you. God bless.19
