PALMS PLUS 2 Happy Reading D. Senthil Kannan INSIDE OUT September 2023 REPURPOSE We have all heard of the 3R of Environmental care, which are Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. Now they have added 2 more R's which are Refuse and Repurpose. So how is repurpose different from the others. The dictionary denition of Repurpose says, “to nd a new use for an idea, product, or building.” So, when we use the same things for an alternative purpose, we can call it repurposing. I am sure many of you would have seen your mom creatively using the leftovers of the food available in the refrigerator, to create a new nameless dish. (Idli Uppuma?) That can be classic example of Repurposing. However, the context of Repurpose, I want to share through this article, is about the original content that we create ( not ChatGPT content). I would like to share some examples, of how I have repurposed content in the past few years, which has helped me save time and effort, at the same time enhanced the reach. My rst experiment with repurposing started way back in 2016 when I published my book “Transformational Thoughts” I have been writing a regular article for my inhouse monthly magazine, PALM PLUS, under the heading, Inside Out, through which I have been sharing my thoughts, ideas, and experiences. Over the course of time, I realized that I had written over 100 such articles. This made me come up with the idea to compile all these articles and publish them in the form of a book. This simple idea made me the author of the book, “Transformational Thoughts”. I also made it a blog and posted it on my social media page, as “Transformational Tuesdays”. I have been sending out a positive quote daily by WhatsApp to several of my contacts. When I reached about 400 quotes that I had created, I found an opportunity to publish them in the form of a daily calendar. I got it designed and printed along with some beautiful Kolam and gave it as a return gift, at my son's wedding reception. I am a part of a book review group, called “Booksights” which meets once a month to review a particular book. I volunteered to moderate a discussion, based on the book, I was reading. The content of the book was quite interesting, so I made it into a one-hour training programme and presented it to a different audience. I also had the opportunity to use this as a short speech on a few occasions. These are just a few of the many ways, I have repurposed content. Content creation is a time-consuming job that takes a lot of effort and work.. So, isn't it wise to use our content for a variety of things? A new age quote goes, “Ideas are the currency of the new economy.” If ideas are so valuable, shouldn't we make the best use of them? Shouldn't we be able to capitalize on it and reap rich dividends? One of the early examples of repurposing, I am able to think of is Stephen Covey's “The 7 Habits of highly effective people”. While most of us would have read it as a book, it was also sold as signature tr a ining progr amme , tr a in-the -tr a ine r programme, audio podcasts, and videos. This is an interesting business model formula to get rich and popular fast. I see this business model catching up, in other elds too, like the publishing and entertainment industry. Translating a book or a movie in another language is a great example of repurposing too. The content remains the same, but if we could just take the effort to get it translated in different languages, we will be able to reach a wider range of audience. In the entertainment industry, movies are voice dubbed in another language or a simple sub-title, makes it possible for the movie to nd a global audience. Korean and Japanese movies have become so popular in India, and same goes with Tamil movies in Japan. Same with books. A lot of authors are famous worldwide, because their work has been translated and made available in different languages. Paul Coelho's book, “The Alchemist” has been translated into 88 languages and have been published in over 170 countries, making it a record holder of the most translated book, in the world. Repurposing is a wonderful idea. Whatever you create, will never go a waste if you can repurpose it, at the right occasion. It is a technique all of us need to learn and use, to enhance our personal image.

PALMS PLUS 3 September 2023 EDITORIAL - LET'S TALK Yours Posi vely, D. Senthil Kannan Editor One day, a construction supervisor on the 6th oor of a building called a worker working on the ground oor. Because of construction noise, the worker on ground oor did not hear his supervisor calling. Then, to draw the attention of worker, the supervisor threw a 10 rupee note from above which fell right in front of the worker. The worker picked up the 10 rupee note, put it in his pocket and continued with his work. Again, to draw the worker's attention, the supervisor threw a 500 rupee note and the worker did the same, picked the note and put it in his pocket and resumed his job. This time, the supervisor picked a small stone and threw on worker. The stone hit exactly the worker head. This time around, the worker looked up and the supervisor communicated with the worker. This story is same as of our life. Universe wants to communicate with us, but we are busy doing our worldly jobs. We get many small gifts that we keep without wondering where they come from. But when we get hurt, the rst thing we blame is the universe or God. The Universe gives us loads of gifts, but we keep the gifts without seeing where they come from and without thanking. We just say we are LUCKY. Then, when we are hit with a small stone, which we call problems, we look up and we communicate with God. So every time we get a gift, we should express gratitude immediately, and not wait until we are hit by a small stone to communicate with the universe. We are in a point of time, where our mobile phone has become our third hand. This excessive dependency on mobile phones, have made us so glued to our phones, that we are losing real time contact with people around us. Excessive use of digital devices diminishes our brain power too, such as loss of creativity, memory and even our ability to think clearly gets impaired. It also leads to many problems like weakened eye sight, sleepless nights, stress and anxiety, shallow relationships and so on. We are all aware of this, but still it is getting increasingly difcult for us to spend time without it. This is where I found this concept of the 30-90-60 rule effective. I have experimented with it in my life, and I should say, it really feels a lot better. So, what is this 90- 30 – 60 rule. Let's take a look. No mobile for 90 minutes from the time you wake up. The rst 90 minutes of your day, your mind is very fresh and you should put your mind to good use, rather than spending it on the phone. You can use this time, to take care of your daily hygiene routines, practice meditation and do some physical exercise, such as walking, jogging, yoga, aerobics or going to a gym. No mobile usage for 30 minutes, once you return home, from work or college. It is the time for you to talk to your parents , spouse or your family members. You can share what happened over the course of the day and also ask them how their day has been. This will help you to build a stronger bonding with your family. No mobile for 60 minutes before sleep. Blue light affects your sleep, which can lead to so many other health issues. You will not be able to get a deep, sound sleep which will make you feel tired even when you wake up the next day and affect your productivity. So, put your phone away 60 minutes before bed. So, what else could you do during that 60 minutes?. Well, you can read a book or write a journal. You could engage in any hobby that doesn't need you to use your digital device, such as drawing or painting, stitching or sewing, or whatever it maybe. You can wind down into the comfort of your bed, listening to music or just going through the entire day in wide detail. When you learn to apply this 30-90-60 minute rule in your life, you will be surprised to see the amazing transformation, it brings. Why me? Attitude is Everything Finding it difcult to overcome phone addiction? Try the 90 - 30 – 60 rule.

PALMS PLUS 6 September 2023 LEADERSHIP LESSONS Brene Brown's book, Dare to Lead, is a transformative read that explores the essence of effective leadership in today's complex and rapidly changing world. Brown, renowned for her research on vulnerability, courage, and human connection, delves into the qualities and practices that make exceptional leaders. Through personal stories, research ndings, and practical strategies, the book offers a compelling guide for leaders at all levels. This book serves as a roadmap for leaders who aspire to create inclusive, resilient, and thriving organizations while nurturing authentic connections with their teams. Here's a snapshot of the ve main lessons in Dare to Lead. 1. Embrace vulnerability: Brown emphasizes that leaders who embrace vulnerability create an environment of authenticity and trust. Instead of putting up a facade of strength and invulnerability, leaders who show vulnerability are open about their fears, struggles, and limitations. By sharing their authentic selves, leaders demonstrate that it's safe for others to do the same, fostering a culture where team members feel comfortable taking risks, sharing their ideas, and being their true selves 2. Cultivate courage: Courage is a key attribute for effective leadership. Brown encourages leaders to cultivate courage by stepping out of their comfort zones, taking risks, and embracing uncertainty. True courage involves being willing to fail, learn from mistakes, and persevere. By modelling courage, leaders inspire their teams to think creatively, push boundaries, and embrace challenges. This mindset encourages innovation and resilience within the organization. 3. Foster a culture of trust: Trust is the foundation of strong leadership and effective teamwork. Brown highlights the importance of clear and open 5 LESSONS FROM DARE TO LEAD communication, setting and respecting boundaries, and holding oneself and others accountable. When leaders prioritize trust, team members feel safe to express their opinions, share their concerns, and take risks without fear of judgment or punishment. Trust creates an environment where collaboration and cooperation thrive, ultimately leading to higher productivity and engagement. 4. Lead with empathy and compassion: Empathy and compassion are vital qualities for leaders to understand and connect with their team members. Brown encourages leaders to recognize and acknowledge the experiences and emotions of others, creating a sense of belonging and psychological safety. By practicing empathy, leaders foster a culture where team members feel valued, heard, and supported. Compassionate leadership promotes open communication, cooperation, and overall well-being within the company. 5. Embrace wholeheartedness: Wholeheartedness is about leading and living with authenticity, selfcompassion, and resilience. Brown encourages leaders to embrace their imperfections and vulnerabilities while also practicing self-care and setting boundaries. When leaders take care of their own well-being, they model healthy behaviours for their team members. Wholehearted leaders prioritize their physical, emotional, and mental health, allowing them to show up fully for their teams and inspire others to do the same. By embodying wholeheartedness, leaders create a positive and inclusive work environment that encourages growth and fosters a sense of belonging. Life is full of systems, rules, and frameworks. But the people who make an impact aren't concerned with categories, or whether or not they're tting in. Their passion to do something different is all they need to drive them – no matter how long it takes to succeed. Whether it's a song that moves people to tears or a life-changing piece of technology, great ideas don't just come out of a box. They come from people who aren't afraid of being original. Be Original

PALMS PLUS 8 September 2023 - Pravin K Sabnis [email protected] Experiential Life Coach, Goa Arise Awake and Take Charge - N C Sridharan www.thetimefoundation.com I happen to receive the above quotation on my mail box today and I decided to write on the topic of habit once again. Isn't true that we are what we repeatedly do? When someone is called an excellent person, it means that the quality of his performance is of a superior quality. Excellence is a state of mind and when implemented properly, it becomes a habit. Just as we got into any habit due to repetition, we can also get habituated to excellence performance by repetition. What is required is a conscious and consistent effort and a determination to do so. We can do the following simple exercises: Ÿ Take a small job everyday and do it excellently well. It could be a very small job, like cleaning your spectacle. Ÿ Don't jump into doing a job when you are not ready. Take some time. Decide if you have the resources to do justice for doing the job on hand. Ÿ Decide which job you need not do excellently. You don't have to be a perfectionist. Ÿ Make a public declaration of your intent to develop the habit of excellence so that you get the benet of the peer group pressure to stick to your resolution. Ÿ Mentally visualize how your life will transform if only you get into the habit of doing your job excellently. Ÿ Know yourself. Find out which jobs you normally don't do excellently and check if you can improve the standard of your performance of those jobs. Try the above small things and notice the effect of the same on your life! We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit. - Aristotle Ad nauseam is a Latin term for an argument that has continued to the point of nausea. An argumentum ad nauseam is a logical fallacy in which erroneous proof is proffered by prolonged repetition of the argument. The argument is repeated so many times that persons are 'sick of it'. The words 'this has been discussed ad nauseam' indicates that the topic has been discussed extensively and those involved have grown sick of it. The fallacy of dragging the conversation to an ad nauseam state in order to then assert one's position as correct due to it not having been contradicted is also called argumentum ad innitum (to innity) and argument from repetition. So often, so many of us argue ad nauseam on social media. At the least, we are boring… at the worst we can be irritating in sickening sort of way. The sick feeling upsets relationships and creates unforgiving ssures in further dialogue. We must ponder whether we are repeating a fallacy backed by illogical proof and offending others by our behavior. We must realize that it is a 'sick practice' to argue ad nauseam. We must learn to let go and move on. The important thing is to think! We must pause to ponder over other possibilities rather than play the broken record of damning prejudices. We need to breathe the fresh air that comes with an open mind that is ready to reconsider and be liberated from the nausea that comes from rigid irrationality. AD NAUSEAM Escape the trend to argue ad nauseam An open mind needs a broader realm!

PALMS PLUS 9 September 2023 The most uncivilsed activity of the civilized worked is gossiping. In gossip, the tongue and the intelligence are let loose. Gossiping is vulgar indulgence. In fact, people come together to form associations and clubs, and gossiping is the lifeline for their fellowship. The most dominant preoccupation of these groups is to discuss about those who aren't present. Never trust a gossiper. After you lave, the on who was gossiping with you will gossip about you with others. Every gossiper will gossip about other gossipers, and this is the noble truth. We shamelessly distort the images of people through gossip, without the slightest care about how much it might affect their lives. Gossip is judgment passed out of half knowledge. Every gossiper eventually drinks his own poison. He becomes highly other people conscious. His mind is curious all the time “What are others saying about me?” Judge not and ye shall not be judged. The contrary is also true. Judge and he too will be judged. Curiosity and inquisitiveness are the lifelines for human evolution. When this thirst and hunger for knowledge is canalized towards realizing the higher realities of life, growth happens. We make a blunder by feeding the very thirst and hunger for knowledge with gossip. Aristotle, Freud, JK and for us – the quest to know is the same. If they had been gossipers, they would have been among us. If we can stop gossiping we can be among them. Great minds discuss ideas. Average minds discuss events. Small minds discuss people. PALMS PLUS 11 September 2023 -Divya.A [email protected] Wisdom of the World The Russian word, I am going to share today is “Glazomer” and literally translates to eye measurement. This word is used to describe “one's ability to measure without any instruments”. Someone with a good Glazomer, can estimate weight and distances without making use of any tools other than his or her eyes. Quite interesting, right? I am sure you would have come across people like this in your daily lives. People who are able to make almost accurate measurements of the things they see. We have all heard about the famous Indian Mathematician, Sakunthala Devi who was able to do many complex mathematical calculations, very quickly without the use of a calculator. She was rightly called the Human computer. While it could be an inborn talent for a few, I guess it is something people can learn by practice too. Every person who has been in a particular profession or trade for a good number of years might have unconsciously developed these sorts of skills related to their eld. For example, an Engineer might be able to tell the measurement of an area, without the use of a measuring tape. A doctor might be able to assess the health of the patient just by looks even before he could do any clinical diagnosis. However, Glazomer has nothing to do with education. Our ancestors were able to predict the rain and weather by observing the clouds. In olden days, temple architecture and painting had so much of symmetry without the use of any tools. You would have also noticed a few carpenters, who can assess the amount of furniture he can make from a wooden log and some of the tailors, who can tell you how much of cloth is needed to stich your dress without, taking any measurement. Similarly, a mother cooks food, not always with the use of a measuring jar for every ingredient that goes to the making of the dish, but with the measure of her own hands and yet she is able to bring out the exact taste every time. We could call it clever guessing or a sort of Spatial intelligence, which could be inborn, or a trait developed over practice. Whatever eld you might be in, Glazomer will certainly give you a feeling of expertise. So, try to practice this art. You can do this by the common “trial and error method.” Just guess and then verify. Over time, you might develop your Glazomer too. GLAZOMER (Russian, Pronounced Go zam yer) successfully committed it to your long-term memory. 3. Speed Review is similar to Classic Review, except the focus is on speed. When you answer correctly, every question awards you 25 points. The questions move really quickly, and you can only answer up to three questions incorrectly. 4. Immerse Mode includes “Learn with Locals.” This feature plays videos of native speakers pronouncing different words and phrases, and your goal is to identify what they're saying. 5. Communicate Mode lets you practice pronunciation and give you feedback. How to Get the Most Out of Memrise? · A fun and efcient memorisation tool for the classroom and beyond. PALMS PLUS 12 LOVE & RELATIONSHIP September 2023 THE SCIENCE BEHIND HAPPY RELATIONSHIPS When it comes to relationships, most of us are winging it. We're exhilarated by the early stages of love, but as we move onto the general grind of everyday life, personal baggage starts to creep in and we can nd ourselves oundering in the face of hurt feelings, emotional withdrawal, escalating conict, insufcient coping techniques and just plain boredom. There's no denying it: making and keeping happy and healthy relationships is hard. But a growing eld of research into relationships is increasingly providing science-based guidance into the habits of the healthiest, happiest couples — and how to make any struggling relationship better. As we've learned, the science of love and relationships boils down to fundamental lessons that are simultaneously simple, obvious and difcult to master: empathy, positivity and a strong emotional connection drive the happiest and healthiest relationships. Maintaining a strong emotional connection: “The most important thing we've learned, the thing that totally stands out in all of the developmental psychology, social psychology and our lab's work in the last 35 years is that the secret to loving relationships and to keeping them strong and vibrant over the years, to falling in love again and again, is emotional responsiveness,” says Sue Johnson, a clinical psychologist in Ottawa. It's about emotional synchronicity and being tuned in.” “Every couple has differences,” continues Johnson. “What makes couples unhappy is when they have an emotional disconnection and they can't get a feeling of secure base or safe haven with this person.” She notes that criticism and rejection — often met with defensiveness and withdrawal — are exceedingly distressing, and something that our brain interprets as a danger cue. To foster emotional responsiveness between partners, Johnson pioneered Emotionally Focused Therapy, in which couples learn to bond through having conversations that express needs and avoid criticism. “Couples have to learn how to talk about feelings in ways that brings the other person closer,” says Johnson. Keeping things positive: According to Carrie Cole, director of research for the Gottman Institute, emotional disengagement can easily happen in any relationship when couples are not doing things that create positivity. “When that happens, people feel like they're just moving further and further apart until they don't even know each other anymore,” says Cole..” The Gottman Lab has been studying relationship satisfaction since the 1970s, and that research drives the Institute's psychologists to encourage couples to engage in small, routine points of contact that demonstrate appreciation. One easy place to start is to nd ways to compliment your partner every day, says Cole — whether it's expressing your appreciation for something they've done or telling them, specically, what you love about them. This exercise can accomplish two benecial things: First, it validates your partner and helps them feel good about themselves. And second, it helps to remind you why you chose that person in the rst place. When it comes to the brain and love, biological anthropologist Helen Fisher has found — after putting people into a brain scanner— that there are three essential neuro-chemical components found in people who report high relationship satisfaction: practicing empathy, controlling one's feelings and stress and maintaining positive views about your partner. In happy relationships, partners try to empathize with each other and understand each other's perspectives instead of constantly trying to be right. Controlling your stress and emotions boils down to a simple concept: “Keep your mouth shut and don't act out,” says Fisher. Keeping positive views of your partner, which Fisher calls “positive illusions,” are all about reducing the amount of time you spend dwelling on negative aspects of your relationship. “No partner is perfect, and the brain is well built to remember the nasty things that were said,” says Fisher. “But if you can overlook those things and just focus on what's important, it's good for the body, good for the mind and good for the relationship.” Happier relationships, happier life: Ultimately, the quality of a person's relationships dictates the quality of their life. “When we know how to heal relationships and keep them strong, they make us resilient. Connection with people who love and value us is our only safety net in life.” { {

PALMS PLUS 13 September 2023 A THOUGHT TO PONDER I was 9. There was pensive silence at home when days after the happy news of my dads promotion in a nationalised bank he received orders of transfer as a branch manager to a small village in Rajasthan. We were then in Ahmedabad and this also happened to be the time he was building a house next to our ancestral home. I had seen him struggle with numbers, adding, subtracting, circling staff loans and FDs he would break and putting a question mark against a few empty spaces in the total. A house is usually a one time in one life effort so everyone goes all out and makes that one room more than what can be afforded and still nds one room less than what was needed. The joint family home housed 14 of us from age 5 to 95 years. Today I watch both the houses abandoned and nature taking over the garden my mother used to tend for hours every day. The Jamun, the Drumstick a few Ashok, Neem and Peepal have survived but all beauty is both transient and fragile and the law of entropy powerful. The lovely owers of myriad colours are all gone. I wonder what happened to the peacock family that came everyday and ate from my moms hand. The Bulbul, the sparrows, the parrots, spotted ycatchers, Cuckoos, a huge troop of monkeys that once in a month would upset the order of the place. Once people leave, a home becomes a house. Initially I didn't feel like selling and now I don't feel like going. Time has taken away ten of its fourteen occupants. I walk around our neighbourhood and see similar fate of so many homes once full of life now replaced or lying still. Why do we stretch and stress to build houses? In most cases our kids won't need it or worse ght over it. What is this human folly of attempting permanent ownership in a leased life with an uncertain tenure given by a landlord whose terms are non-negotiable and there is no court of appeal. One day all we have built with love and EMIs will either be demolished, fought over, sold or lie in ruins. Every time I ll a form that asks for 'permanent address' I smile at human folly. There is a Zen story that an old monk walked into a Kings palace demanding he wanted to spend the night in this Inn and the guards told him, “What Inn, can't you see its a palace?”. The monk said “I came here a few decades back someone was staying there, a few years later someone else took the throne from him, then someone else. Any place where the occupant keeps changing is an Inn.” George Carlin says “house is just a place where you keep your stuff as you go out and get more stuff”. As houses get bigger families get smaller. When the house has occupants, we desire privacy and when the nest empties we crave for company. Birds and Animals must be laughing at us humans that give up living in order to build their dream home and in the end depart the Inn they mistook as a permanent residence. In early 1900 in England, people used to sprinkle ninhydrin powder over the door lock before they left home. If a thief tried to break-in, they would have ninhydrin powder in their hand. Ninhydrin reacted with sweat and produced a rather permanent red colour. Check the suspects hand, and the thief would be caught 'red-handed’ Origin of 'Red Handed'

PALMS PLUS 14 September 2023 Eight Common Goal Setting Mistakes Achieving Your Dreams the Right Way - Avoid these common mistakes! The greater danger for most of us is not that our aim is too high and we miss it, but that it is too low and we hit it.– Michelangelo Buonarroti, Renaissance artist John is reecting on the last goal that he set for himself... Everything started well – he was making progress, he felt great about what he was doing, and he was excited about future possibilities. But then things unraveled. The goal took longer to complete than he thought it would, and he became discouraged. And, because he didn't stop to look at what he had achieved, he lost his drive and focus. Before he knew it, the goal – and the opportunities it would have brought – were forgotten. Sound familiar? In this article, we'll look at some common mistakes that people make when they set goals . Learn how to recognize these mistakes, so that you can avoid making them yourself! Mistake 1: Setting Unrealistic Goals: When you're exploring possible goals, you need to unleash your imagination and ambition, put your reservations aside, and dream big dreams. However, once you've decided on a goal, make sure that it is realistic, and that you can actually achieve it in the time frame that you have set for yourself. For instance, if your goal is to run a marathon, it's wildly unrealistic to sign up for one next month, unless you've already done several months of training. Or, if your goal is to become CEO of a company, but you have no experience, this goal might not be practical – at least not yet! To set realistic goals, use SMART Goal Setting strategies: make sure that your goals are Specic, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-bound. Mistake 2: Focusing on Too Few Areas: Imagine that you've just written your list of goals for the next year. You've committed to increasing your sales by 15 percent, applying for a promotion, and reading one leadership book each month. Although this is an ambitious but achievable list of goals, there's a potential problem: these goals focus only on your career. You've completely omitted goals from other parts of your life. Many people focus solely on their work when they set goals. However, you can't neglect activities that bring you joy. Goals like writing a book, competing in an adventure race, or starting a home garden might also be incredibly important for your happiness and wellbeing. So, when you set your goals, make sure that you strike the right balance between different areas of your life. And remember that "balance" is different for everyone Mistake 3: Underestimating Completion Time: How often has a task or project taken longer than you thought? Probably more times than you can count! You may also say the same for goals that you've set in the past. If you don't estimate goal completion time accurately, it can be discouraging when things take longer to achieve than you think they should. This can cause you to give up. So, use effective scheduling strategies when planning your goals. And always pad your timelines to account for delays and setbacks. If you add extra time into your estimate, you'll feel less pressure to rush and nish by a certain date. Mistake 4: Not Appreciating Failure: No matter how hard you work, you will fail to achieve goals from time to time. We've all been there, and it isn't fun! However, your failures are what ultimately determine your character. They also contain lessons that can change your life for the best, if you have the courage to learn from them. So don't be too upset if you fail to achieve your goals – just take note of where you went wrong and use that knowledge to reach your goals next time around. Mistake 5: Setting "Other People's Goals": Some people – family, friends, or even your boss – may want to inuence the goals you set. Perhaps they feel that they know what's best for you, or maybe they want you to take a certain path or do certain things. Clearly, it's important that you have good

PALMS PLUS 15 September 2023 relationships with these people, and you need to do what your boss asks, within reason. However, your goals need to be your own – not anybody else's. So be politely assertive , and do what you want to do! Mistake 6: Not Reviewing Progress: It takes time to accomplish goals. And sometimes it can feel that you aren't making much progress. This is why it's important to take stock of everything that you've accomplished on a regular basis. Set small sub-goals, celebrate your successes, and analyze what you need to do to keep moving forward. No matter how slow things seem, you probably are making progress! You can also take this opportunity to update your goals, based on what you've learnt. Have your priorities changed? Or do you need to set aside some extra time for a particular goal activity? Goals are never set in stone, so don't be afraid to amend them if you need to. Mistake 7: Setting "Negative" Goals: How you think about your goal can inuence how you feel about it, and whether you achieve it. For instance, many people have a goal to "lose weight." However, this goal has a negative connotation; it's focused on what you don't want – your weight. A positive way to reframe this goal is to say you want to "get healthy." Another example of a negative goal is to "stop staying late at work." A positive way to rephrase this is to "spend more time with family." Negative goals are emotionally unattractive, which makes it hard to focus on them. Reframe any negative goals so that they sound positive: you may be surprised by the difference this makes! Mistake 8: Setting Too Many Goals: When you start setting goals, you may see many things that you want to accomplish. So you start setting goals in all areas. The problem with this is that you have a xed amount time and energy. If you try to focus on many different goals at once, you can't give individual goals the attention they deserve. Instead, use the "quality, not quantity" rule when setting goals. Work out the relative importance of everything that you want to accomplish over the next six to twelve months. Then pick no more than, say, three goals to focus on. Remember, the success of your work towards a goal rests on focusing on just a few things at a time. If you limit the number of goals you're working on, you'll have the time and energy you need to do things really well! Key Points: Living a life without setting goals is like sailing a ship without having planned a course: you're likely to end up somewhere that you wouldn't want to go! This is why you need to set goals to develop yourself and achieve your dreams. But you need to avoid common mistakes along the way. These can cause you to feel discouraged, question your abilities, or even give up. The good news is that you're much more likely to accomplish your dreams if you know about these mistakes, and avoid them! 1. Your brain has about 100 billion neurons. A typical brain cell has from 1,000 to 10,000 connections to other brain cells. 2. Studies have shown that children who are breast fed display IQ's up to 10 points higher by the age of three. 3. Your brain is full of nerve cells, but it has no pain receptors. Doctors can operate on your brain while you're awake and you won't feel a thing. 4. The right side of your brain controls the left side of your body, and the left side of your brain controls the right side of your body. 5. Your brain weight accounts for about 2 percent of your body weight. But your brain uses 20 percent of your body's oxygen supply and 20 to 30 percent of your body's energy. 6. When you are born, your brain weighs about a pound. But by age 6, it weighs three pounds. What happens? Learning to stand, talk, and walk creates a web of connections in your head—two pounds worth! 7. People with lower IQ are at greater risk of being concussed. A Danish study looked at 520 men who had sustained concussion after having their IQs tested by the national draft board. 30.4 percent of the concussed men had had dysfunctional scores. Experts decided lower IQ is a risk factor. Interesting facts about your brain and intelligence

PALMS PLUS 16 September 2023 “Kafka on the Shore" by Haruki Murakami is a captivating novel that intricately weaves together two parallel narratives, delving into themes of identity, destiny, and the blurred lines between reality and imagination. The story follows two main characters: Kafka Tamura, a 15-year-old boy who runs away from home to escape his father's oppressive prophecy, and Nakata, an elderly man who possesses the unique ability to communicate with cats. Kafka's journey leads him to a quiet library in a small town, where he meets Oshima and Miss Saeki, two enigmatic gures who play crucial roles in his exploration of his own identity and past. Nakata's story takes a surreal turn as he embarks on a quest to nd a lost cat and uncovers a mysterious connection to a series of unexplained events. Murakami's narrative is a blend of the ordinary and the fantastical, with talking cats, enigmatic spirits, and metaphysical encounters woven seamlessly into the lives of his characters. As the narratives unfold, readers are drawn into a complex tapestry of emotions, memories, and existential questions. The writing is both poetic and introspective, inviting readers to ponder the nature of reality and the self. One of the strengths of "Kafka on the Shore" lies in its character development. Kafka's coming-of-age journey is relatable and evokes empathy, while Nakata's innocence and his unique gift create an intriguing contrast. The secondary characters, such as Oshima and Hoshino, also contribute depth to the story and offer various perspectives on the themes explored. The novel however, demand a patient reader. The narrative unfolds at a contemplative pace, occasionally dipping into philosophical conversations and abstract musings. Some readers might nd this slow pacing a bit challenging, especially if they're looking for a more action-driven plot. The novel is thought-provoking exploration of the human psyche, destiny, and the interconnectedness BOOK SUMMARY Kafka on the Shore by Haruki Murakami of lives. Haruki Murakami's writing is immersive and imaginative, but its abstract nature might not appeal to everyone. With its mix of magical realism, vivid characters, and existential themes, this novel deserves a solid four-star rating. It's a recommended read for those who appreciate introspective literary ction that invites them to explore the boundaries of reality and self. For those willing to embark on a journey that challenges conventional storytelling, this novel offers an escape into a world where boundaries blur, and the mysteries of existence are to be explored. However, if you prefer straightforward plots and concrete resolutions, this novel might be a departure from your usual reading preferences. I noticed a young monk, teaching a group of ve-year-olds. He had a great aura about him, the poise and condence of an adult. “What are you doing?” I asked. “I just taught their rst class,” he said, then asked me, “What did you learn in your rst day of school?” “I said, I started to learn the alphabet and numbers. What did they learn?” “The rst thing we teach them is how to breathe.” “Why?” I asked. “Because the only thing that stays with you from the moment you're born until the moment you die is your breath. All your friends, your family, the country you live in, all of that can change. The one thing that stays with you is your breath.” This young monk added, “When you get stressed—what changes? Your breath. When you get angry—what changes? Your breath. We experience every emotion with the change of the breath. When you learn to navigate and manage your breath, you can navigate any situation in life." - Jaisha Priyam

PALMS PLUS 17 September 2023 BLACK ROBBERS On a recent weekend in Atlantic City, a woman won a bucketful of quarters at a slot machine. She took a break from the slots for dinner with her husband in the hotel dining room. But rst she wanted to stash the quarters in her room. I'll be right back and we'll go to eat' she told her husband and carried the coin-laden bucket to the elevator. As she was about to walk into the elevator she noticed two men already aboard. Both were Black. One of them was very tall and had an intimidating gure. The woman froze. Her rst thought was; “These two are going to rob me.” Her next thought was; “Don't be a bigot, they look like perfectly nice gentleman.” But racial stereotypes are powerful, and fear immobilized her. Avoiding eye contact, she got in, turned around stify and faced the elevator doors as they closed. A second passed, and then another second, and then another. Her fear increased! The elevator didn't move. “My God” she thought, I'm trapped and about to be robbed! Her heart plummeted. Perspiration poured from every pore. Then one of the men said, “Hit the oor.” Instinct told her to do what they told her. The bucket of quarters ew upwards as she threw out her arms and collapsed on the elevator oor. A shower of coins rained down on her. “Take my money and spare me”, she prayed. More seconds passed. She heard one of the men say politely, Ma'am, if you'll just tell us what oor you're going to, we'll push the button.” The one who said it had a little trouble getting the words out. He was trying mightily to hold in a belly laugh. The woman lifted her head and looked up at the two men. They reached down to help her up. Confused, she struggled to her feet, “When I told my friend here to hit the oor”, said the average sized one, “I meant that he should hit the elevator button for our oor.” I didn't mean for you to hit the oor, Ma'am.” He spoke genially. He bit his lip. It was obvious he was having a hard time not laughing. The woman thought; “My God, what a spectacle I've made of myself.” She was humiliated to speak. The three of them gathered up the strewn quarters an relled her bucket. When the elevator arrived at her oor they then insisted on walking her to her room. She seemed a little unsteady on her feet, and they were afraid she might not make it down the corridor. At her door they bid her good evening. As she slipped into her room she could hear them roaring with laughter as they walked back to the elevator. The woman brushed herself off. She pulled herself together and went downstairs for dinner with her husband. The next morning owers were delivered to her room; a dozen roses. Attached to EACH ROSE WAS A CRISP ONE-HUNDRED-DOLLAR BILL! The card said: “Thanks for the best laugh we've had in years.” Moral: Please don't get in a habit of judging people without knowing the entire story. Please remember there is more good in this world than media tells you. SHORT STORY

PALMS PLUS 19 September 2023 Cartoon of the Month In a class on abnormal psychology, the instructor was about to introduce the subject of manic depression. The instructor asked, "How would you diagnose a patient who walks back and forth, screaming at the top of his lungs one minute, then sits in a chair weeping uncontrollably the next?” A young man in the rear raised his hand and suggested earnestly, "A basketball coach?" Teacher: "Now Johnny, can you tell me some of your favorite numbers?” Little Johnny: "541, 29, 623, 188, 769 and 40.” Teacher: "Very good, Johnny, now I would like you to add your favorite numbers together.” Little Johnny: "Uhm, uh... actually, a couple of numbers I really like are 4 and 1." My boss arrived at work in a brand-new Rolls Royce. “Wow,” I said. “That's an amazing car.” He replied, “If you work hard, put all your hours in, and strive for excellence, I'll get another one next year!” Patient: It must be tough spending all day with your hands inside someone's mouth? Dentist: I prefer to think of it as having my hands inside their wallet. When I was a child, my parents used to always say "Pardon my French" after a swear word. I'll never forget the rst day of French, when my teacher asked us if any of us knew any French. A telemarketer calls, "I would like to speak with Max, please." The homeowner reluctantly replies, "I suppose that would be possible, but it seems rather strange.” The telemarketer responds, "Why would that be?” The homeowner answers, "This is the rst time we've ever had a call for the dog.” Little Johnny had left the house to meet his friends without asking his mother. Once he came home, his mother was not pleased. “Johnny," she said, "if you wanted to go to the park with your friends, why didn't you come and ask me rst?” "Because," Johnny replied, "I wanted to go to the park with my friends." I'm not saying that I'm a bad driver... But when I drive, my navigation device doesn't speak, it prays in Latin. A police detective was at the house of a woman whose past three husbands had suspiciously died. "I heard your rst two husbands died of food poisoning." he inquired. "What caused it?” "Poisonous mushrooms." she replied. “I see," replied the inspector. "And how did your third husband die?” “He wouldn't eat his mushrooms." The other day, Nancy and I got into some petty argument. As is our nature, neither of us would admit the possibility that we might be in error. To her credit, Nancy nally said, "Look. I'll tell you what. I'll admit I'm wrong if you admit I was right.” "Fine." I said. She took a deep breath, looked me in the eye and said, "I'm wrong.” I grinned and replied, "You're right." The teenager lost a contact lens while playing basketball in his driveway. After a brief, fruitless search, he gave up. His mother took up the cause and within minutes she had found the lens. "I looked everywhere, how did you do that?" he asked. “We weren't looking for the same thing," she explained. "You were looking for a small piece of plastic. I, on the other hand, was looking for $150!"

Ph : 0461-4200472 EXPRESSION AUGUST 2023 September 2023 You may write me down in history With your bitter, twisted lies, You may tread me in the very dirt But still, like dust, I'll rise. Does my sassiness upset you? Why are you beset with gloom? 'Cause I walk like I've got oil wells Pumping in my living room. Just like moons and like suns, With the certainty of tides, Just like hopes springing high, Still I'll rise. Did you want to see me broken? Bowed head and lowered eyes? Shoulders falling down like teardrops. Weakened by my soulful cries. Does my haughtiness offend you? Don't you take it awful hard 'Cause I laugh like I've got gold mines Diggin' in my own back yard. You may shoot me with your words, You may cut me with your eyes, You may kill me with your hatefulness, But still, like air, I'll rise. Does my sexiness upset you? Does it come as a surprise That I dance like I've got diamonds At the meeting of my thighs? Out of the huts of history's shame, I rise Up from a past that's rooted in pain, I rise I'm a black ocean, leaping and wide, Welling and swelling I bear in the tide. Leaving behind nights of terror and fear , I rise Into a daybreak that's wondrously clear, I rise Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave, I am the dream and the hope of the slave. I rise! I rise! I rise. th 4 - A half-day PEP UP Mojo s e s s i o n o n “ A n g e r M a n a g e m e n t ” w a s conducted by Mr. D.
