PALMS PLUS 2 Happy Reading D. Senthil Kannan July 2024 Drain or Gain? International Day of Family Remittances is th observed on 16 June, every year. The day recognizes the importance of migrant workers and the humongous e orts and hardships they put up with, to support and uplift their families. I was pleasantly surprised and delighted that there is a day to recognize and celebrate these people. While many people complain of brain drain in the country, I am someone who believes that human potential should flourish in the right environment. Moreover, I feel that the migrants of a country are not only helping their families, but also helping the nation, through their overseas remittances. Just to give an idea, about how much money comes into India, through foreign remittances according to the World Bank report India received $125 billion in foreign remittances in 2023. This is the highest amount of remittances in the world, and accounts for 3.4% of India's GDP. The Indian diaspora, which is estimated to be around 35 million people, plays a crucial role in supporting families and contributing to the country's economic resilience. It is not just about the money they bring into the country, but also the pride they add to our country. Don't we feel proud, when we say that the CEO of Google or Microsoft, is an Indian? A country with huge population like India, should acknowledge the fact that we do not have enough high paying job opportunities within the country and so it is a good idea to go out in search of opportunities. Like the Tamil poet Bharathi says "Thirai kadal odi thiraviam thedu." (Cross the seas, in search of treasures). It is not just the white collar, but there are a lot of blue-collar workers, who go abroad, to do menial jobs. A lot of construction labour, nurses, helpers, cleaners, migrate to Gulf and other countries, with the only intention of supporting their families. To give you a glimpse of the hardships they go through, let me share something, I heard from one of my exsta , Mr. Kannan, who migrated to the Gulf, in search of better pastures. One fine day, after 3 years, of leaving my company, Kannan dropped into my o ice. I was glad to see him. While he was working here, he was the o ice peon and was drawing a low salary, which was hardly su icient for him to make ends meet. But now, he looked well o , wearing a nice dress and some gold ornaments, like a bracelet and chain. Few moments, after exchanging some formal greeting and words, I told him, I was so happy to see him reach this level of financial status. The moment I told him that, he burst into tears and started weeping like a child. I was puzzled for a moment, but a little later he started telling me about his life and his daily routine, which was so painful to hear. He said that he was put along with a few more coworkers in small rooms, in a labour camp, which has bunker beds and minimum facilities. It is located far away from the city and there is no way, he could go out. His routine starts early. They must be ready by 7am. A vehicle comes to pick them up and travels for more than an hour to reach the city. There, they will be dropped in at di erent workplaces, where a supervisor will allot them the work for the day. In fact, they are not even dropped in the same workplace for more than a few consecutive days, because the labour contractors are apprehensive, that may make some local friends, and complain about their situation. They are picked up back at around 6pm and reach their labour camp around 7pm. After that they have to do all their domestic chores such as cook their own food, wash their clothes and hardly have any free time, except to eat and sleep. Their passports are held with the contractors, and they can go to India, only during the allotted holidays. I asked him, why does he continue to go to work there in spite of all the hardships. What he said touched my heart so deeply. He said, “Sir, I am crying only in front of you. But in front of my parents and family members, I put up a happy face. They are happy and comfortable, because of the money I am able to earn and send to them. If they know, I am in pain, then they will not send me to work. Their happiness will vanish. I don't want that to happen.” I was pleased to hear of his noble intentions. Many times, we fail to appreciate the amount of sacrifice, they do, just for the cause of their family to live a better life back in their homeland. They deserve our respect and understanding, rather than being looked down upon.

July 2024 Yours Positively, D. Senthil Kannan INSIDE THIS ISSUE PALMS PLUS 3 The World Environment Day is observed on 5th June, of every year. This year, I had the opportunity to be at the world's only carbon negative country, on this special day. Yes, I am talking about Bhutan - a small kingdom, adjacent to India. During my visit, I could experience the vast difference in the quality of air. It was evident of their high environmental standards. I realised that this green achievement of the country was the result of strict environmental policies, which they faithfully adhere to. Ÿ As of now, Bhutan has 72% Green cover and they are particular that, at any point of time, irrespective of any economic development, 60% of the country must remain under forest cover. Ÿ The country practices organic farming, which means no use of harmful chemical fertilizers or pesticides. Ÿ There is no shing or slaughtering, allowed in the country. It is not because of any vegetarianism philosophy, but as an environmental measure, to cut down on methane gas emission. Ÿ There is a high import duty of 50% to 100% on vehicles, as a measure to cut down on carbon emission. Ÿ Minimum use of air conditioners, which is not only because of the natural advantage, of pleasant weather, but also as a conscious choice. Ÿ The country is solely dependent on green power for its energy needs, which is generated through Hydroelectric plants. In 2021, Bhutan generated nearly 11,000 GWh of electricity and exported over 80% of it. Ÿ Being a carbon negative country, they are also able to sell carbon credits, which is another big revenue for the country. Wouldn't it be wonderful, if we too implement similar strategies to enjoy such a clean environment? What do you think? PALMS PLUS 5 July 2024 The Art of Delegating A Key to E ective Leadership In the complex landscape of leadership, the ability to delegate tasks and responsibilities is a crucial skill that distinguishes successful leaders from their counterparts. This article explores the significance of delegation through a practical scenario, emphasizing how e ective delegation can lead to enhanced productivity, improved project outcomes, and a more motivated team. The Tight Deadline Dilemma: Consider two managers faced with the challenge of meeting a tight deadline for a critical project in the same company. The first manager, recognizing the urgency and tight timeline, opts to shoulder the majority of the project himself. Concerned about potential mistakes from his team members based on past experiences, he decides to handle most aspects independently. On the other hand, the second manager, equally cognizant of the time constraints, takes a di erent approach. She breaks down the project into specific parts and strategically delegates each segment to members of her team. This approach allows her to oversee the work, addressing concerns about quality control. Both managers submit their projects on time, but the outcomes highlight the impact of e ective delegation on overall project completeness and quality. Understanding Delegation: Delegation, in the context presented, involves sharing tasks and authority with the team to e iciently achieve goals. It goes beyond merely assigning routine or challenging tasks; it encompasses breaking down complex projects into manageable components and entrusting them to capable team members. The second manager's approach demonstrates that e ective delegation not only distributes workload but also ensures a more comprehensive, thoughtful, and e ective final product. Common Misconceptions about Delegation: Many managers mistakenly believe they are already adept at delegation. However, the tasks often delegated tend to be mundane, tedious, or overly challenging, potentially leading to disinterest and reduced morale within the team. To keep the team engaged and motivated, leaders should consider delegating some of the more interesting and exciting tasks. This approach not only diversifies the team's responsibilities but also communicates a willingness to share rewarding assignments, fostering a positive team dynamic. The Morale Boosting E ect: While it may seem tempting for a leader to handle critical tasks independently, the long-term benefits of e ective delegation far outweigh the immediate satisfaction of personal involvement. Delegating interesting and challenging tasks not only motivates the team but also showcases trust in their capabilities. The second manager's willingness to break down the project and assign meaningful roles contributes to heightened morale and a sense of collective achievement. In the ever-evolving realm of leadership, mastering the art of delegation is indispensable for achieving sustainable success. The scenario of the two managers illustrates that e ective delegation goes beyond task assignment; it involves strategic planning, consideration of team strengths, and an understanding of the larger project objectives. Leaders who embrace delegation as a means of empowering their teams and distributing responsibilities will find themselves with a more motivated, e icient, and successful group. As the saying goes, "If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together." E ective delegation ensures that leaders and their teams not only reach their destination but also thrive in the journey.

PALMS PLUS 8 July 2024 A leader must build a winning spirit, encouraging employee's enthusiasm. A positive environment urges employees to use their energy and talents to compel the company toward productivity. The powers to influence, inspire, and move people to share their talents fall upon the leader. Being a truthful, honest and positive role model is the only way to motivate your team toward a productive relationship, working together for the good of all. A Leaders Ten Steps to a Winning Spirit: 1. Believe in Yourself - Know that you are unique and only you can provide certain talents. Realize that you are enough; you don't have to be more. 2. Don't Live with the Status Quo - Become energized by new ambitions and excitement for living. 3. Challenge the Odds and Be Bold - Shake o worries and anxiety, becoming confident and free from personal limitations. You can make a di erence. 4. Be Open to New Ideas - Recognize that you can learn from others. Be open to what others are o ering, being flexible and adaptable. 5. Practice Specific Leader Behaviors - Leaders are not born, but have to practice the qualities of other successful leaders. 6. Visualize Your Success as a Leader - In order to have a winning spirit, you must see yourself as a leader. Have a successful result in mind. 7. Maintain Focus - You have power over your thoughts, and can change your life by changing your attitude. Focus on winning. 8. Discipline Yourself - Replace your inner conflicts with calmness and accept a rich life. Don't waste your time on things that don't matter. 9. Enjoy Today -Do not worry about tomorrow. You can plan for the future, but enjoy today. Live the day that is right in front of you to the fullest. 10. Practice Being Positive - Your positive thought will be mirrored right back to you. These ten steps are pivotal to instilling a winning spirit in both yourself and your employees. Following these proactive leadership behaviours will bring your organization a competitive edge. The right mix of leadership qualities and styles will pull the company together not only in the good times, but in the times of crisis, as well. It all stems upon a strong organizational performance, climate, and positive engagement of the workforce. Change your thinking, Change your life. RULES OF SUCCESS Rule 05 - Be Crystal Clear One big reason most people are not successful is because they don't define what success means to them. When you ask them what success means to them, they would say "Have a nice car?" "Have a nice body." "Have a lot of money." etc. Di erent people measure success di erently. Yes, I know that, but the keyword is "measure". For example, "Have a lot of money." How much money exactly is a lot to you? $100 million, $100 billion? Have a specific answer for your measurement of success. It's ok even if your definition of success got to do with material possession. Well at least define it as clearly as possible so that the universe knows what you're after. Do you feel excited after knowing what you really want after seeing the example I set above? I bet you do. For the longest time I didn't understand this rule , because I thought it was unnecessary. It wasn't until recently that I discovered that once I know what I want, it cannot only make me more productive, but it can also dramatically increase the clarity I have. Here's a quote by Cheshire Cat from Alice in wonderland which really resonates with this rule. "Alice asked the Cheshire Cat, who was sitting in a tree, "What road do I take?" The cat asked, "Where do you want to go?" "I don't know," Alice answered. "Then," said the cat, "it really doesn't matter, does it?" Therefore, If you want to be successful in life, or start a business around your passion, you first have to know what you want.

PALMS PLUS 9 July 2024 Mrs. Malavika Hegde CEO, Cafe Co ee Day From Tragedy to Triumph Cafe Co ee Day (CCD) has been a cherished destination for countless memorable moments, from weekend hangouts with friends to special family celebrations. However, the sudden death of its founder, V G Siddhartha, in July 2019 cast a shadow over India's largest co ee shop chain. Siddhartha's death by suicide, after jumping into the Netravati river near Mangalore, shocked the nation. His body was discovered on the riverbank after a 36-hour search. Siddhartha's Final Moments and Struggles: On his way to Sakleshpur, Siddhartha asked his driver to stop on a bridge, telling him to wait until he returned. When he didn't come back after an hour, the driver called him, but Siddhartha's phone was switched o . The driver then informed Siddhartha's elder son, prompting a search operation. Siddhartha, inspired by global co ee culture, opened the first CCD in 1996 on Bangalore's Brigade Road. Despite early challenges, the venture grew into India's largest co ee chain. However, Siddhartha's last letter suggested that overwhelming debt and business losses drove him to despair. He apologized for "failing to create the right profitable business model" and cited unbearable pressure from private equity partners and the income tax department. He expressed regret for failing as an entrepreneur, insisting he never intended to mislead anyone. Malavika Hegde's Resilient Leadership: Many doubted CCD's survival after Siddhartha's death, given the company's significant debt. Yet, Malavika Hegde, Siddhartha's wife, defied expectations by taking over as CEO of Co ee Day Enterprises Ltd (CDEL) in December 2020. Despite her grief, Malavika committed herself to saving the company. CCD's debt was over Rs 7,000 crore in 2019, a massive challenge for Malavika, but she remained resolute. Background and Early E orts: Malavika, born in 1969, is the daughter of former Karnataka Chief Minister SM Krishna. She completed her engineering degree in Bengaluru and married Siddhartha in 1991, with whom she had two sons, Eshaan and Amartya. Before becoming CEO, she served as a non-board member of CDEL for many years. In a 2020 letter to CCD's 25,000 employees, Malavika expressed her commitment to preserving the company's legacy and reducing its debt. Her resolve came amid revelations that a private entity owned by Siddhartha owed Rs 2,693 crore to CDEL. She promised to reduce the debt by selling some investments, emphasizing her dedication to the company's future. Achieving a Miraculous Recovery: Under Malavika's leadership, CCD saw a significant turnaround even during the COVID-19 lockdown. She focused on honouring Siddhartha's legacy by settling debts and growing the business. CDEL's debt was reduced from Rs 7,200 crore in March 2019 to Rs 1,731 crore by March 2021. This reduction was achieved without any debt write-o s, highlighting Malavika's e ective management. Malavika's vision is to transform CCD into a multibi ll ion- doll a r company fre e of debt. He r determination reflects her late husband's dreams, aiming to expand CCD's presence across the country. Current State and Future Prospects: Today, Cafe Co ee Day operates 572 cafes nationwide, along with 333 CCD Value Express kiosks. The business includes over 36,000 vending machines serving co ee to CCD customers. CCD contributes 47% of CDEL's consolidated net revenue, with the logistics business accounting for 45%, and the remaining 8% from other sources. Malavika Hegde's remarkable leadership has not only rescued CCD from the brink of collapse but has also set the stage for a promising future. Her journey from personal tragedy to corporate triumph is a testament to resilience and dedication, ensuring that CCD continues to be a beloved part of India's co ee culture.

Dr Nirmala Vijaykumar MD(OG), MRCOG Consultant Gynecologist Queens Fertility Center, Tirunelveli PALMS PLUS 10 July 2024 RECYCLING THE BICYCLE The humble bicycle has been around us for a couple of centuries now. It has slowly evolved into more sophisticated modes of transport from the motor bike to the fast cars. But, as the decades roll on, the world is refocusing on the merits of this simple bipedal for a myriad of reasons. Be its influence on health or the way it symbolises equality or its green footprint, the bicycle is regaining attention. The World Bicycle Day is celebrated on June rd 3 every year to create awareness on its ever increasing role. STRONGER & FITTER: Cycling strengthens the lower body muscles without putting stress on the knees. As our muscle becomes stronger, we reduce our risk of diabetes, heart disease and certain cancers. And, because of its low impact on knees, it is an easier mode of exercise for older people. Cycling for an hour every day is an excellent aerobic exercise that helps to burn fat and reduce body weight. Kids who regularly cycle to school are unlikely to gain weight even during their vulnerable teen years when their bodies are changing. HAPPIER AND CALMER: Bicycling is a great way to improve mindfulness as we tend to be alert to the tra ic and scenery around us, a welcome break from digital distractions. The e ort of cycling leads to secretion of endorphins which leads to an e ortless joy! Further, as we bicycle our way through green locales, we tend to take in the smells, sounds and weather which connects us to nature, boosting our inner happiness. The exercise we get from cycling stimulates neuronal connections in our nervous system that keeps us sharper and reduce the onset of dementia. Cycling is a wholesome way of bonding with family as it combines the joy of travelling and working out without the monotony of exercise. And, yes, your children are more likely to grow up into physically fit adults. The pressure on the genitals during a bike ride may increase sexual pleasure and help couples stay sexually active. LOVING THE ENVIRONMENT: Most of the world's cities are choking up on their own exhaust. And it's time to change that. Using Bicycles and Electric vehicles to commute are the only answers. Air pollution is a major cause of health disorders – from headaches, wheezing, allergies and lung cancers- it's di icult to breathe in a highly polluted environment without air masks and filters. Do your part to stop this escalating pollution- save your city, start cycling. As more and more cyclists join the league, systems will fall in place regarding routes, safety and regulations. Safety is still the number one concern for bicyclists. We can learn from the Scandinavian countries about planning safer cities for the cyclists, but it will kick in only if there are enough users. “Whoever discovered the bicycle deserves the thanks of humanity” xBçé© ¼ÃVé ¨õðºï¹_ ¼kïD ¼kõ|D... gç\çB© ¼ÃVé ¼ÄVDÃçé >sìÂï ¼kõ|D... {½Â ØïVõ¼¦ ÖòÍ]òÍ>V_, xB_ gç\l¦D ¼>V_s ¶ç¦Í]òÂz\V? åV[ ¨ÐD gðkD >V¼ª ïV«ðD... PALMS PLUS 11 July 2024 Prompt Engineering Techniques Prompt engineering is the process of crafting prompts or instructions to guide the output of language models like ChatGPT, enabling users to control and tailor the generated text to their needs. What is ChatGPT? ChatGPT is a cutting-edge language m o d e l bu i lt o n tra n s fo r m e r a r c h it e c t u r e, r e n ow n e d f o r generating high-quality, human-like text by processing vast amounts of data. Why prompts? Ÿ T o o p t i m i z e C h a t G P T ' s performance, understanding how to e ectively prompt the model is crucial Ÿ Prompting empowers users to steer the model's output towards relevance, accuracy, and quality Ÿ Despite its capabilities, ChatGPT may not consistently produce desired output without proper guidance, highlighting the i m p o r t a n c e o f p r o m p t engineering. Why a prompt formula? A p ro m p t fo r m u l a t y p i c a l l y comprises three key elements: the task (clearly stating what the prompt aims to generate), instructions (guiding the model's text generation process), and role (defining the model's role in generating text). With this brief introduction, we will d e l v e i n t o v a r i o u s p r o m p t engineering techniques tailored for ChatGPT and cover di erent prompt types and their strategic use to achieve specific objectives, in our upcoming articles. What are the components of a prompt formula? 1. Task : Always begin your prompt with a clear action verb + goal. For example: “Generate a 6-month fitness plan for me” 2. Context : Provide just enough background to constrain the possibilities- user's background, fitness goals, environment etc. For the fitness example, we could give context: “I'm a 70kg female looking to gain 5kg of muscle over 3 months while only going to the gym twice a week.” 3. Exemplars : Include examples or frameworks to guide the AI: “Answer this question, using the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result)” 4. Persona : Specify who you want the AI to be. For example: “I am a product manager”or “recruiter” 5. Format : Literally visualize and describe the exact structure you want for the output. Examples: “Summarize in a table with 3 columns: original feedback, team responsible, priority” 6. Tone : Specify the desired tone or feeling: “Write in an enthusiastic tone” or “Use clear, concise language in a confident yet friendly style” or “Show optimism and positivity” Actionable steps : Now that you have an idea about the prompt formula, you are good to start exploring the world of ChatGPT. PALMS PLUS 12 July 2024 It's the friends you can call up at 4am that matter. - Merlene Dietrich We live in a society which is becoming very competitive day by day. On one side opportunities are growing and on the other side the risk and uncertainties are also growing. We need to muster all our resources even to turn out ordinary things in life. Have you heard of the Five M's – Money, Material, Method, Machinery and Men? These are the five basic resources which we should learn how to use. Of all these resources, the human resource is the most important and critical of all the other resources. We have to work with people to reach our goals and aspirations in life. Friends play a very important role in our life. When it comes to friendship, it is not the number of friends that we have, but the intensity of friendship that is very important. What decides the intensity of friendship is how much we are willing to sacrifice for each other. In an organization, there is a process to rate vendors. We can also evaluate the quality of our friends by some of the following parameters: 1. Honesty: is our friendship honest and true? 2. Is our friendship attentive and adaptive? If this parameter is lacking, the friendship will break. 3. Is our friendship adaptive of our goals and aspirations? 4. What is the quality of trust level? 5. Do we know the expectation of each other? Otherwise, it will be only one sided. 6. Will the friendship last during bad days? 7. Is friendship mutual or one sided? You can also add more to the above list. Like we monitor any other resource, we should also measure and maintain our friendship. PALMS PLUS 13 July 2024 8 signs a man loves you profoundly VIt's not always easy to know what somebody else feels. And even though we can tell each other, part of all of us knows that ultimately, words are cheap. It's all too easy for people to say something they don't mean or mean something they don't say. Unfortunately, this is especially true with men. Many men are still uncomfortable expressing their feelings in words, and that can leave you trying to guess how he really feels about you. Fortunately, psychology shows that there are several signs that can tell you that a man loves you profoundly. Keep an eye out for these signs, and you'll always know that he's crazy about you. 1. He listens: Active listening enhances relationships, building care, empathy, and understanding. It strengthens bonds, signifying commitment. Attenti ve partners deepen connections, fostering trust and intimacy. Genuine interest in listening reflects love and respect, forming a strong foundation for enduring companionship. 2. He prioritizes your happiness: True love prioritizes your happiness, demonstrating selflessness without neglecting oneself. Research reveals men express a ection and involve partners in activities, prioritizing their happiness. Including you in their life, they seek your smile, showcasing genuine care and commitment, fostering a fulfilling relationship. 3. He is vulnerable around you: Men may find it di icult to express emotions openly, often resorting to humour or avoiding depth, even with close friends. However, with a deeply loved partner, they embrace vulnerability. Psychologist Isaiah Pickens highlights the importance of celebrating successes, empathizing with failures, and being emotionally present. Entrusting innermost feelings signifies profound love. 4. He's there for you – physically and emotionally: When a man truly loves you, his presence is unwavering. He cherishes spending time with you, o ering assistance without hesitation. Whether it's physical support like opening a jar or emotional support during crises, he's there. Love isn't about being a constant companion but about being reliably present when needed, supporting and nurturing through thick and thin. Appreciate his unwavering presence—it's a testament to his deep a ection. 5. He thinks long-term: Men's feelings often manifest through their words, particularly when discussing the future with you. Psychologist Barton Goldsmith emphasizes the importance of "futurizing" with a partner, creating shared happiness and commitment. Successful relationships involve planning together, indicating dedication. When a man includes you in his vision of the future, it signifies love and a desire for a lasting bond. Appreciate this commitment—it's a declaration of love and lifelong partnership. 6. He respects your independence: In healthy relationships, autonomy is respected; love doesn't entail control. A man deeply in love values your independence, understanding that being together doesn't negate individuality. Psychologist Leon F Seltzer emphasizes the importance of self-well-being within a relationship. Sacrifice is crucial, yet maintaining self-identity is vital for true love and mutual respect. 7. He is kind: Kindness is essential in relationships. A man truly in love won't fake kindness to attract you; it's inherent. He genuinely cares for your well-being, showing kindness through generosity and support. His actions aim for your happiness, not personal gain, fostering a fulfilling and caring relationship. 8. You fight fair: In relationships, mutual respect leads to fair fights during rough patches. Psychologist Jennifer Kromberg highlights signs of unhealthy conflict: emotional blackmail, personal attacks, refusal to admit fault, and lack of empathy. Fighting fair means avoiding these habits, even in heated moments. A man's commitment to fair fighting signals profound love and respect.

PALMS PLUS 14 July 2024 The Hoshin Planning System Steering Everyone in the Right Direction Getting people's goals aligned Imagine you're part of a fleet of personal aircraft traveling from various locations to one destination. Each individual pilot is responsible for getting to that destination. Providing precise directions for each pilot isn't practical. There are too many starting points, and too many di erent delays, adverse weather conditions, and detours that pilots might encounter along the way. So you've all been given a sophisticated navigation device to keep you on course. This navigation device will ensure that, even though each pilot is acting independently, they'll all arrive at the same endpoint. The challenge faced by these pilots is much the same as the one faced by workers in many organizations. There's a strategic destination that they're all supposed to reach – however, they don't always have a convenient device like this to help them reach their objective. Sometimes individuals, teams, and even whole departments can get so far o course that they seem not even to remember what the final destination was supposed to be! A Systems Approach: This is where it's useful to have a system to co-ordinate di erent parts of your organization and keep them on course. One such system is "Hoshin Kanri" developed by the Japanese in the 1960s and '70s, Hoshin Kanri (also called the Hoshin Process) is a useful process for managing work towards a key strategic initiative. This approach aligns all parts of an organization to accomplish an important objective. The Hoshin Process: It is a system for strategic planning that: 1. Selects a key objective. 2. Aligns implementation plans at all levels. 3. Implements, reviews, and improves the plan on an ongoing basis. Step 1: (Plan) Define What You Want to Improve: This is most often a key strategic objective that needs a significant change in how things are done. Step 2: (Plan) Establish Sub-Goals to Achieve Your Objective: Ÿ What organizational (or team/ functional/ departmental) goals for the year are needed to achieve this objective? Ÿ What checkpoints are necessary to keep the goals on track? Ÿ What controls can you put in place to ensure that the goals are successfully reached? Ÿ How will you measure progress and evaluate success? Record these and use them as the basis for your review process. Step 3: (Do) Communicate the Plan: Ÿ Communi cate your pl an throughout the organization. Ÿ Ensure that all levels of the company understand your vision and goals. Ÿ Have each department and team set its own goals to link directly to the objective and the sub-goals you've established. Ÿ Make sure that managers in these departments and teams "ripple goals down" so that everybody knows their part in the plan, and is using the Hoshin process to manage the people who report to them. Ÿ Assign clear responsibility for each item in the implementation plan. Ÿ Make sure that you have agreement on all items within the plan with all of your reports, and make sure that this agreement has rippled down as well. Step 4: (Check) Develop a System to Collect Information on Your Control Parameters, and Then use it to Manage Change: Are your key metrics being met? If not, why? Create a review table that shows the:

· Goal. · Goal owner(s). · Time frame. · Performance metrics. · Targets. · Actual results. Then use this table to manage movement towards these goals on an ongoing basis. This "check" step ensures that your plan is a living document. It doesn't just sit on a shelf to collect dust once it's finished. Hoshin planning is based on the idea that to reach your strategic goals, the company needs to be in a constant state of reflection and evaluation. Step 5: (Act) Analyze Results, and Take Corrective Action Where Needed: If there are any di erences between expected and actual results, identify the sources of those di erences. Discuss these, organize corrective action, and implement this action. Ÿ What is going right? Ÿ What is going wrong? Ÿ Do the plans meet the realities of your business and the problems you face? Ÿ Are measures appropriate? Ÿ What can be done better, or di erently, to reach your destination? This stage of the process ensures a system of continuous improvement. To keep moving the company toward its vision, review the plans not just once a year, but on an ongoing basis to determine how daily work should be done. With this review (or act) step, you can ensure that plans continually evolve to take into account a changing environment. Step 6: Repeat the Process as Needed: This process can be cycled over and over to maximize the quality of your e orts. It can also be used within your various business units, functions, and teams to ensure that their specific strategies have the same goal alignment and commitment to continuous improvement. Hoshin planning creates a process whereby everyone in the organization knows the overall direction. It was developed to create a systematic process for aligning goals at all levels of the organization with strategic vision, so that the organization's strategy can be achieved. The FABing technique Have you heard of the FABing technique? It is a simple, yet e ective approach rooted in the triad of Features, Advantages, and Benefits, which emerges as a versatile and indispensable strategy applicable across diverse domains. Applicable to marketing endeavours, service promotions, or the meticulous evaluation of potential candidates, the FABing technique becomes a narrative sculptor. Commencing with the identification of a distinct Feature, one isolates a characteristic, capability, or quality that distinguishes the subject of focus. Consider the example of a cutting-edge smartphone adorned with a high-resolution camera. Transitioning seamlessly to the Advantage, this step elucidates precisely how the identified feature elevates the o ering, perhaps by capturing crystal-clear images adorned with vibrant colours and razor-sharp details. However, it is in the subsequent exploration of Benefits, particularly those rooted in emotions, where the true resonance of FABing is unveiled. This step transcends the utilitarian aspect, delving into the emotional realm to reveal how the advantage contributes to a profoundly positive and meaningful experience. In this context, the emotional benefit lies in sharing life's precious moments through stunning, professional-quality photographs By aligning features, advantages, and emotional benefits strategically, it ensures that the c o m m u n i c a t e d m e s s a g e tra n s c e n d s information, creating a resonant impact that lingers in the minds of the audience. In essence, FABing becomes the art of storytelling, transforming features into tales of meaningful advantages and emotional benefits. PALMS PLUS 15 July 2024

PALMS PLUS 16 July 2024 A Tale of Sibling Love, Compassion, and Grace In the tranquillity of my recently tidied house, a sudden ring from the phone interrupted the calm. It was my brother, announcing an impromptu visit with his wife. Excitement mingled with a touch of anxiety as I hastened to prepare for their arrival. Little did I anticipate the unexpected turn when they stepped through the door, accompanied by their mother on her inaugural visit to our home. Surprised by their unforeseen guest, my initial excitement waned as I realized the inadequacy of my preparations. Nevertheless, I greeted them warmly and ushered them inside, determined to make the best of the situation. Rushing to the kitchen, I scanned the cupboards for something suitable to serve, but my e orts were met with disappointment. With only a handful of oranges at my disposal, I quickly improvised, squeezing them into refreshing glasses of cold juice, hoping it would su ice to quench their thirst. As I presented the juice to my brother's wife and their mother, I attempted to pass o plain water as 7UP to my brother, hoping to salvage the situation. However, my ruse was short-lived as he quickly discerned the truth, casting a momentary pall over the gathering. Yet, instead of reproach or disappointment, my brother responded with understanding and compassion. With a reassuring smile, he accepted the situation graciously, di using any tension that lingered in the air. In an attempt to rectify the situation, my brother o ered to fetch a clean glass for his mother-inlaw. However, a mishap occurred as a glass slipped from his grasp, shattering on the kitchen floor. Apologizing profusely, he epitomized grace and humility, demonstrating a willingness to take responsibility for his actions. His mother-in-law, displaying remarkable poise, dismissed the incident with a wave of her hand, insisting that there was no need for concern. Her unwavering composure in the face of adversity served as a poignant reminder of the power of forgiveness and understanding. As they prepared to depart, my brother handed me a small sum of money, a gesture of consideration and thoughtfulness. Grateful for his kindness, I accepted the o ering with humility, touched by his willingness to support me in my time of need. Reflecting on the events of the day, I couldn't help but marvel at the depth of my brother's love and compassion. In a moment of vulnerability, he extended a hand of friendship and support, o ering solace and reassurance in the face of my shortcomings. In the aftermath of their departure, I found solace in the resilience of sibling bonds. Despite moments of uncertainty and inadequacy, our familial ties remained steadfast, o ering comfort and strength in times of need. It served as a poignant reminder to cherish and nurture these relationships, for they are the bedrock of our lives and the source of our greatest joys. In conclusion, the story serves as a testament to the enduring power of sibling love, compassion, and grace. It exemplifies how, even amidst unexpected challenges, our familial bonds endure, enriching our lives with love, support, and understanding.

PALMS PLUS 17 July 2024 - Pravin K. Sabnis [email protected] Experiential Life Coach, Goa ‘The game is not over till the last ball is bowled!' The above quote is from the sport of cricket. Real players don't give up before the game is over. In fact, they don't give up even when the game is over. They know that there will be other games to redeem themselves. So often, so many of us are deterred by defeat in the game of life and we give up. We must persist on the path of life and not give up. We must be active and positive instead of lamenting our predicament. We have to ri se up to ever y challenge that looms large. Even when things fail, it is never really over. We must lift ourselves and step ahead to display our willingness to live life to the fullest e ort. Life is about persisting until the end. The indefatigable do not allow an ambience of death when the body is still alive. They persist even when lifelessness sets in. They strive to revive and restore life. Till the end is not upon us, it does not make sense to give up on life. Resolves to persist can delay or sometimes defer the eventuality of death. And even if it does not, it will be a life lived well! Fika is not just a Swedish word, but something that is very much a part of the Swedish lifestyle. In Sweden, Fika is often translated as "a co ee and cake break", which is kind of correct, but really it is much more than that. Fika means making time for friends and colleagues to share a cup of co ee. Fika is a state of mind, an attitude and an important part of Swedish culture. Many Swedes consider that it is almost essential to make time for fika every day. The word fika is actually derived from the word co ee itself. Co ee is co ee in Swedish too, except that it is spelt di erently. So, when you invert the word ka i, you get fika. The famous Indian Co ee Chain, “Co ee day,”has this popular tagline. “A lot can happen over a cup of co ee.” It is so true. A lot of love stories, friendships and even business deals happen over a cup of co ee. Co ee time is not just about having a ca einated drink to boost our mind, but something deeper that stirs our soul. So, the phrase, “Let's have a co ee together,”is a way of inviting someone to have a one-on-one conversation. Fika cannot be experienced by a single person, at home or workplace. That would just be taking a co ee break. Fika is more of a voluntary social ritual, wherein you take the time, to pause from your routines, switch o your mobile phones or any technological distractions and spend time with friends or colleagues. All Swedes consider it important to make time to stop and socialise, for it helps them refresh their mind and strengthen their relationships. Even the mighty auto manufacturing company in Sweden, Volvo stops for Fika. And it makes good business sense, because in companies wherein, this is in practice, it has been observed that there is better team bonding leading to enhanced productivity. Fika, is used like a verb. Swedes, say to each other, "Let's go and fika!". What you eat during fika is not important. The food is incidental to the companionship, but whatever food you choose for fika, it should be fresh and well presented. Ideally it should be homemade. Many team leaders in Sweden consider it important to regularly bake something at home to take to work for fika. Fika is all about slowing down and appreciating the good things in life. So, make sure you are never too busy for a fika. Fika Swedish word PERSIST Don't give up or desist Life is when we persist!

PALMS PLUS 18 July 2024 A. SIVA Supdt. of Customs, Tuticorin. : 9485652899 (DISCLAIMER: The views expressed in this article are strictly of author's personal views only. For more details, read full text of the notifications/Circulars/Case laws etc.) GST on You Tube Income You Tube: YouTube's rise as the premier platform for content creators and consumers is undeniable. With its growing dominance over traditional satellite TV channels—many of which now maintain a YouTube presence—advertisers have shifted focus to this digital medium. YouTube itself doesn't own the videos; it merely provides a space for creators to upload content at no cost. Revenue is generated when advertisers pay to display ads on these videos, a portion of which is shared with the creators as “AdSense” income. Beyond AdSense, YouTubers also earn through various other channels. The financial benefits and the allure of fame have made becoming a YouTuber a popular ambition among youth. This article sheds light on the GST implications for income earned through YouTube. Income through Adsense: In this scenario, content creators get the money from You Tube in the form of convertible foreign currency (in dollar) and this amount is paid from Singapore. YouTubers provide services via the internet by posting videos and content on their channel with monetisation and providing a platform for advertising. As per Section 2(17) of the IGST Act [2], such services are known as Online Information Database Access and Retrieval service (OIDAR). In essence it constitutes services provided through the medium of internet and received by the recipient online without having any physical interface with the supplier of such services. For taxability of OIDAR, the place of supply in respect of the subject supply should be in India. The general rule under Section 13 of the IGST Act is that the place of supply of services is the location of recipient of services. Hence, the location of recipient of service is outside India (You Tune Asia, Singapore). Therefore, the same is treated as export of service in terms of Section 2(6) of IGST Act,2017. It is specifically mentioned in the GST statue that no tax is payable for export of service. Accordingly, GST is not payable on the income received by You Tuber under the category “AdSense”. Other Revenues: Once the You Tuber becomes popular he/she is known as 'influencer', and some brand would approach the You Tubers for promotion of their brand. In return, You Tuber gets paid for that. In some cases, the You Tuber directly plays advertisements at the beginning or end of their videos and such advertisement is not played by You Tube but directly by You Tubers. In some cases, the You Tubers s e l l t h e ir p r o d u c t s u n d e r t h e c a t e g o r y “merchandise”. They also earn income by charging some charges exclusively from their customers. This charge is also known as join button i.e. a fixed monthly subscription is charged from the subscribers. Practically in the above scenarios, other than AdSense, the recipients will be in India only and the suppliers (You Tubers) too are in India, it cannot be qualified as “Export of Service”. Hence, such services are liable for GST at 18 %. Conclusion: YouTubers should carefully assess their income sources and fulfil GST obligations accordingly.

PALMS PLUS 19 July 2024 400 passengers and only 200 meals were loaded on a Delhi to New York flight. The airline had bungled, and the crew was in a fix! However one smart flight attendant had an idea! About 30 minutes into the flight she nervously announced: "Ladies and Gentlemen, I don't know how this happened, but we have 400 passengers on board & only 200 dinners! Anyone who is kind enough to give up his / her meal for someone else, will receive free unlimited liquor during the entire duration of the flight!" Her next announcement came 6 hours later: "Ladies and Gentlemen, if anyone wants to change their minds, we still have 180 meals available!" Moral of the Story : People who drink have very kind hearts. During dinner at wedding function, Bride's worried father rushed to Event Manager and whispered in his ear: All are taking Carrot Halwa only, nobody is taking Gulab Jamun. What will we do if Halwa gets finished and Jamun is so much surplus? My prestige is at stake!! "Don't worry at all, Sir. I will set it right." Said the Event Manager. Then he dialled a number and said, " Hello, Sanjay, listen carefully. Remove Monica from Halwa desk and shift her to Jamun desk. In her place, ask Abdul Chacha to serve Halwa. After a rough day spent corralling my rowdy kids, I'd had enough. “I think I'm going to sell them,”I hissed to my sister. “You're crazy,”she said. “For thinking of selling them?” “For thinking someone would buy them.” What did the bald man exclaim when he received a comb for a present? “Thanks, I'll never part with it!” You can eat your dessert between 11:55 PM and 12:05 AM in night, and the calories will simply get divided between the two days. I will not sleep...... not until I find a cure for my insomnia. 15+15= thirty and 16+16= thirty too A wife comes downstairs before a dinner date with her husband. "Do I look fat in this dress?" the wife asks. "Do I look dumb in this shirt?" the husband replies. Finding one of her students making faces at others on the playground, Ms. Smith stopped to gently reprove the child. Smiling sweetly, the teacher said, "Bobby, when I was a child, I was told that if I made ugly faces, it would freeze and I would stay like that.” Bobby looked up and replied, "Well, Ms. Smith, you can't say you weren't warned." A waiter places a warm cup in front of the gentleman. The gentleman takes a sip and spits it out. He turns to the waiter and says, “Waiter! This co ee tastes like mud!” The waiter, looking surprised, turns to the gentleman and says, “But, sir, you asked for fresh ground!”
