TEACHING
PHILOSOPHY
"We Lead for Aspire to Inspire before
Expire"
"We Lead for Aspire to Inspire Before Expire", that my philosophy of
teaching. Education is not merely having students in a class and teaching
them using the traditional slides which encounter them with “blurring”
“boring” and “not interactive”, teaching is beyond that capacity. Teaching
is about a feeling of acceptance in the education journey.
My main aspiration of mine in education is to prepare students with high
adrenaline to learn both the academic and non-academic subject matter.
I believe that a handful of collaborations among students and teachers
definitely spread positive vibes in a learning atmosphere.
“GIG Educators” is my inspiration of mine to be more approachable to
students. That is the ”secret recipe” to gain their full attention in class. Be
approachable, understandable, and intelligible. Teaching in the era of
high technology is totally different from the traditional style of teaching,
today’s academic arena requires us not only to be educators but also to
be a friend to our students to understand their needs and wants.
Now, delivering “ILMU” to the millennials and upcoming generation alpha,
and beta, requires me to integrate innovative and attractive ways of
teaching. Before expiration, I hope I am able to incorporate my students
with every single knowledge that I have, to fully occupied them with
“ILMU” in “duniawi” and “ukhrawi”.

TEACHING
&
INNOVATION
"Creative, Innovative & Responsive"
Being "alien" to students is my innovation in teaching. It implies that I
continuously innovate my delivery strategy by coming up with
creative activities to get my students' smart responses. The quote
from Saidina Ali r.a. inspires me greatly to develop original teaching
concepts.
“Don’t force your children to behave like you, for surely they have been created for a
time which is different from your time”
This indicates that the conservative method of teaching, in which
students sit in a chair and listen to a lecture for five minutes before
thinking about what to eat after class, what movie to watch next,
and so forth, is no longer effective in today's students. To educate
this generation, I as an educator must adapt to changing ways that
millennials learn.

ASP 390: ISLAMIC ACCOUNTING
& AUDITING
Students learn about the latest trends and issues in ASP 390 (Islamic
Accounting and Auditing) class. This includes learning about Islamic
contract implementation like Murabahah, Mudharabah, Musyarakah,
and et cetera. Hardcore courses like ASP 390, demand that students
understand terms like "debit" and "credit" before making decisions
about certain matters that appear to be in this category. In ensuring
the objectives of this course are achieved, I created an activity called
"theatre" to integrate all the topics covered in the form of acting in
order to make sure each of my students understood what they were
being taught. Surprisingly, all of them performed admirably; at the end
of the video, they present a solution for a newlywed couple who are
experiencing financial difficulties and have trouble understanding
Islamic contracts because they are purchasing a home. The recording
and editing processes take roughly a week to finish. I am very
impressed by their hard work and efforts. Here I provide a link for your
review as well.

ASW 380: FIQH MUAMALAT
Fiqh Muamalat is a compulsory course for all students majoring in
Islamic finance. The content of this course is too theoretical and
sometimes if not delivered well, could be one of the dry courses. it is
about the basic principles of muamalat within the prescribed
framework of Islam. It will help in determining the validity and
understanding of the shari’ah process in developing Islamic financial
products. Students are exposed to contemporary, fiqh muamalat-
related issues in the Islamic finance industry. In order to comprehend
the subject, I collaborate with Bank Islam to give a series of talks
regarding the contemporary issues of fiqh muamalat. Actually, this is a
way for students to interact with actual practices. In fact, I ask my
students to create videos of the "high demand" fiqh muamalat issues
when planning their activities. They are doing well, as they manage to
do editing using various apps available such as “Cap Cut”,
“Kinemaster”, “Filmora”, "Canva" and a few others. The following are the
example of their presentation at YouTube platform:

ASP 398: ISLAMIC SOCIAL FINANCE
Islamic social finance is about Islamic non-bank institutions in Malaysia.
Sometimes, this subject also called Islamic philanthropy, which requires
students to learn about the foundation, development, issues, and
challenges of Islamic institutions in Malaysia namely zakat, waqf, ar-rahnu,
and baitumal. In this course, I create a “padlet for self-introductions”,
before the session even begins. Then, I come out with the idea, for
students to come out with their own mind mapping. I divided the class into
four groups, each group will have one institution to describe just in one
mind map. Impressive results, when they are happily designing their mind
map using “Canva” and a few other apps. At the end of the class, I let them
share their mindmap using padlet and this platform is actually a medium
to exchange their mind mapping which helps a lot in enhancing their
understanding.

COMMUNICATION
A large class with around 100 students is considered to be business
communication. The main purpose of this course is to increase students’
responsiveness to the functions and position of effective communication in the
business. This course focuses on the application of communication principles in
achieving organisational goals. Special emphasis is placed on developing writing
and speaking proficiency in English. Conducting a big class, and delivering
lectures with slides will end up dozing off students. So, I create activities, which
require them to move around in a class such as “fly out your bad emotion before
class begins”, they need to create their own paper plane, and throw it outside
class. Next, activities that involve “crafting the persuasive ideas using manila
card“, which require them to be in their multi-races group discussing the topic
given. Third, a CEO, acting like they are CEO presenting their ideas in enhancing
communication with potentials investors. It looks simple, but they love activities
very much. In fact, this kind of learning definitely assist them in understanding
the subject matter. By doing activities in a team, the students are scaffolded to
ensure they understand the topics, clear of any micconception and had support
from peers while learning.

"MOOC & MC AS IDEATION"
Throughout my journey as a teacher, I learn a lot about students' needs. As pandemic
Covid 19, disrupt the teaching arena, we are actually almost lost track, students are
suffering from poor information provided, no clear guidance in conducting assignments,
and tasks given, et cetera. At that time, I imagine myself in students' shoes, and what
should I do to assist them. Then I come out with the idea of "digitalized the delivery". I
comprehend myself by editing the video and making it a lively presentation to my students.
Along the line, I assist them with digital assignments and activities to complement their
understanding. That is actually, the beginning of MOOC/MC in my life. Those MOOCs and
MCs are dedicated to all my beloved students.

EVALUATION
"TAKE MY HAND, HOLD IT TIGHTLY"
What does it mean by supervision? Difference people might
have a different definition in supervising. like what has been
said by late Donald Winnicott (psychoanalysis):
"Good enough mother is the mother when her child throws the
food back at her, does not overact to this event as a personal
attack, or sink under feelings of inadequacy and guilt, but can
hear from the child expressing his or her temporary inability to
cope with the external world"
This analogy is a better reflection on how good supervisor to
supervise their supervisee. Helping those in need in
academicians alone is not enough without understanding the
need and abilities of students. The role of the supervisor is not
restricted to produce a quality of thesis but also play a role in
creating a safe relationship that provides a container that
helping students to the right path.
Page 16
LET'S WALK THIS JOURNEY TOGETHER
"Every student has different abilities both in understanding the
need and requirements to do their research. My Aqilah doing her
Ph.D. for about 2 years and a half, and she progress very well and
was able to work independently with minimal supervision, but
Rahman, my Master's student needs really high motivation, since
this is the first time his doing research. The same story with Yan
Zhiyue and Zhang chenzuo (Kyra her english name). I always keep
on track of their progress so that they do not easily give up on their
Master journey, Keep it UP! Chaiyok!!!"
Page 16
LET'S WALK THIS JOURNEY TOGETHER
" Facing health problems while doing Ph.D. is considered a big constraint to
Li Dandan, she progress very well, but since last year, she facing health
problems that burden her a lot, slowly but surely. I believe she can do it!
Zichang is an aggressive student, she shows her interest very well, especially
when I teach her about methodology. for a beginner in research, the
research method could be the main problem for her. Siqi, is doing her PhD
right now, just started and progressing well, very hardworking student and I
was impressed with her ability to explore new things in doing her research.
Bawazir is my new student, just started, he works really hard to achieve his
own target, completing a Ph.D. within three years, Good Luck Guys!!!"
Page 16
LET'S WALK THIS JOURNEY TOGETHER
"Being working and at the same studying, post a challenge to Jamal. Jamal
is my Master's student from Dubai. He traveled from Dubai to Penang
just to get my supervision on his thesis. He progresses well, just
submitted his proposal for defense. Wow!!! I am impressed with his
effort. Hisyam is another Master's student, hard-working as well and in
fact, he works as a Food Panda rider just to have enough money for his
Master's fees. Just started his Master's, and now he just completed his
literature...Chaiyok!!! I am THANKFUL to have all of you in my teaching
journey"

FINALLY... CONGRATS!!!
"Brilliant is a gift"
Yogees is a brilliant student, she had
the opportunity to upgrade her
knowledge and skills under Master
of Arts (Finance) at Universiti Sains
Malaysia and she completed her
master's education within one and
half years under the supervision of
Associate Professor Tajul Ariffin
Masron and graduated in the year
2018. Then she continued her PhD
journey with me and Associate
Professor Tajul Ariffin Masron and
graduated in 2020. She completed
her thesis within two and half years
and published fourteen papers
under Scopus and WOS with great
support and efforts from both
supervisors. She very high
determined student with a talented
personality, Good Job dear!

"Struggle is REAL"
Mother of a boy, Solehah Yahaya.
Dedicated Ph.D. candidate from a
B40 family. Her husband is an
employee of Pos Malaysia Berhad
as a clerk. She takes roughly 6
years to do her Ph.D., and I can
tell how difficult it is for her. She
encountered a few issues while
finishing it, but she was able to
realise her goal. I always told her
about my experience to inspire
her and keep pushing through
with her PhD. Alhamdulillah, she
ultimately finished it, and even
before receiving her degree, she
received an offer to work as a
lecturer at Al-Bukhary University.

FINALLY... CONGRATS!!!
"This is my students from ASP 398 and ASW 390
courses, they finally graduated after the Covid-19
Crisis...Congrats ALL, proud of you guys!"

“Tell me and I will forget, teach me and I will remember, involve me and I will
learn”
A quote by Benjamin Franklin defines that a person learns more effectively by doing
and involving actively in the process of acquiring knowledge and skills. Taking this
quote as the teaching philosophy in our module entitled Cents of Life, we aimed to
empower the student to capture digital financial knowledge through an active learning
approach. We believe that involving students actively during the learning process will
enable them to trigger their metacognition ability leading to effective learning. They will
not only learn from doing themselves but also by observing how their peers act on the
given subject.
Page 16
BANKRAKYAT@SOM
"Knowledge is power, Knowledge shared is power multiplied"
As said by Robert Boyce, the power of knowledge will spread fastly by sharing it with
others. This is a sharing session with ar-rahnu staff at Bank Rakyat. This resembles a
discussion about positioning ar-rahnu at a global pace. Since ar-rahnu is my area of
expertise, thus I might assist them with study that I did. While I am sharing the
theoretical side of things, they shared the practical side. Enjoy the discussion as
they related their experiences with "fake gold," syndicates, and other topics. They
liked the concepts of "ar-rahnu digitalization", but there are still a few hiccups here
and there. Yes, a lot of research needs to be done on this, InsyaAllah.”
