MONMOUTH UNIVERSITY EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITY FUND (EOF) SUMMER ACADEMY 2017

EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITY FUND HISTORY

State of New Jersey
Higher Education
Promoting Excellence for All

In November 1967, in the aftermath of the previous summer's riots in Newark, New Jersey's newly-appointed
Chancellor of Higher Education, Ralph A. Dungan, directed a memorandum to the presidents of all of the
state's institutions of higher education. In it he outlined a proposed program of special assistance to young
men and women from economically and educationally disadvantaged backgrounds. The presidents' response
was immediate, widespread, and overwhelmingly favorable. Enthusiasm was particularly marked at those
institutions that were participating in the federally supported Upward Bound Program, which sought to help
high school students from disadvantaged backgrounds prepare for entry into college.

The following February, the Select Commission on Civil Disorders (the Lilly Commission, established in
response to the events in Newark) made its report to Governor Richard Hughes, who subsequently submitted
his Moral Recommitment message to the New Jersey State Legislature. The message called for the
establishment of a broad range of programs to address the basic conditions the Commission had cited as
contributing to the summer's unrest. Among those programs was the Educational Opportunity Fund,
established by legislation sponsored by then - freshman legislator Thomas Kean.

EOF set the pace for many initiatives which today are widely incorporated into college life. Among the many
powerful strategies implemented by EOF are pre-college articulation, basic skills testing and remediation,
systematic retention efforts, peer counseling and peer tutoring, academic support courses, multicultural
curricula and human relations programming, student leadership development, and outcomes-based program
evaluation.

EOF has also been a leader and a linchpin in the higher education system's effort to increase diversity. While
participation is not limited to minority students, EOF sponsors more than one-third of the African American
and Latino students at the state colleges and New Jersey's independent institutions, and over one-quarter of
the African American and Latino students enrolled at New Jersey colleges and universities participate in the
EOF program. EOF enrolls about 12.5% of the first-time; full-time New Jersey freshmen who enter the state's
colleges and universities each fall.

EOF SUMMER ACADEMY 2017 THEME

Each year, the EOF Summer Academy has a theme that helps drive the 5-week program. This theme presents
itself throughout the Summer Academy through community building activities, weekly excursions, and within
Emerging Leaders. As a first-year scholar, we know that there are a lot of unknowns; however, it is important
to remember that positive thinking is half of the work and so, we present the EOF Summer Academy 2017
Theme below:

As Helen Keller said, “alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” As an individual of the Class of
2021, there is no doubt that you as an individual will celebrate many successes and at times, experience
challenges. Remember that you are not alone. As a member of the EOF Summer Academy 2017 cohort, be
confident that we are all here to support you and as a team, we will achieve greatness.

5 DIMENSIONS OF WELLNESS

WHAT IS IT?

Overall wellness is composed of 5 individual dimensions of health. The goal for the 5 Dimensions of Wellness is
to achieve balance and identify opportunities for realignment. In the quest for overall wellness, we strive to
enhance intellectual health, financial wellbeing, social relationships, emotional strength, and physical health.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?

The 5 Dimensions of Wellness provide a context for individuals to identify areas for growth and areas of
fulfillment. According to the Center for Health, improving well-being in one dimension can have a positive
effect on other dimensions. Get started by setting goals to improve one or two dimensions of health, adding
goals for other dimensions over time.

SOME WAYS THAT WE WILL EXPLORE THIS DURING THE SUMMER

 Emerging Leaders Class
 Helpful Resource Sharing
 One-on-One Meetings w/ EOF Counselor
 Practice!

MONMOUTH UNIVERSITY EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITY FUND (EOF) SUMMER ACADEMY 2017

WEEK I | INTELLECTUAL WELLNESS

WHAT IS IT?

Intellectual Wellness allows you to have an open mind and a strong desire for new ideas, challenges, and
experiences that can be applied to personal decisions, group interaction, and community betterment. As EOF
Scholars, we encourage ongoing intellectual growth, and creative yet stimulating mental activities which
provide the foundation to discover, process, and evaluate information.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?

Intellectual Wellness allows you to become more mindful and well-rounded. It leads to exploration and
stimulates curiosity. Curiosity is important because it can empower you to try new things and develop an
understanding of how you see the relationship between yourself, others, and the environment.

SOME WAYS TO STAY INTELLECTUALLY HEALTHY

“MANY PEOPLE MAKE THE MISTAKE OF THINKING THAT ALL THE CHALLENGES IN THEIR LIVES WOULD DISSIPATE IF THEY JUST HAD ENOUGH MNEY. NOTHING
COULD BE FURTHER FROM THE TRUTH. EARNING MORE MONEY, IN AND OF ITSELF, RARELY FREES PEOPLE. IT’S EQUALLY RIDICULOUS TO TELL YOURSELF THAT
