final draft AR

2017 Year in Review

NOV 10-12

“ It was one of the best festival experiences
I have had in 3 decades of festivals! The
engagement of audiences and filmmakers
and filmmakers with each other was rich.
— Catherine Ryan, Filmmaker

“ This was certainly one of the best
festivals I have attended and I have been
to hundreds. Good size, great quality
filmmakers and audience, great support
from staff and board. only wish I had time
to see more films!
— Linda Hattendorf, Filmmaker

“ I hate to disappoint, but I think you are
a model festival. From the passion of
the programmers to the excitement and
openness of the audiences, it’s just a
wonderful local event. It’s the kind of
festival that you attend and where you
find community no matter where you
are. That’s not only special, but unusual.
Wonderful job and THANK YOU.
— Beth Levinson, Filmmaker

These and more films will be available in 2017 in the Madelyn Osur Film
Library, more details at RMWFILMINSTITUTE.ORG/LIBRARY.

“ “Being an independent filmmaker can
be lonely -- and the challenges we face
are huge. The RMWFI retreat gave us
the time to step out of our normal lives,
share what we know, and laugh a lot.
Having the opportunity to exchange
stories and advice in a breathtakingly
beautiful setting was an enormous gift
for which I am incredibly grateful!”
— Laurie Kahn, Filmmaker

RMWFI IN THE COMMUNITY

YmOosUtTuHndOeUr-TseRrEveAdCHsepgrmoegnratsmotfaorguer tcsoomnme uonfitthye 177 Students
— at-risk youth. Partnering with local alternative 11 Schools
schools and three youth facilities, approximately ten 10 Filmmakers
films are screened at each location the week before
the Festival. Students complete projects in response
to one of the films (a drawing or painting, a poem
or other form of creative writing or additional
research on an issue raised) and then attend a panel
discussion with the guest filmmakers. This program
creates an opportunity for these students to
experience the art and power of documentary film in
a meaningful and interactive context.

“The highlight of the RMWFF weekend for me was the Youth Outreach
Program. I wasn’t prepared for the depth of thought, emotion, and
expression that the teens offered during the interactive session in the
high school auditorium. This program is the jewel of the festival, in
my opinion.” — Robin Truesdale, Filmmaker

“ One of the most powerful experiences I’ve had touring with the film
for a year. I wish every festival could do this.”
— Serena Dykman, Filmmaker
