We could tell you about Bethel, its amazing access to outdoor
recreation in all seasons, its small but wonderful and walkable
downtown, how it seems like there’s always a fun event to go
to or live music to see, its surprising quantity and quality of
dining and lodging establishments, and its fun locally-owned
shops. Those things all exist here. Those things might entice
you to visit for the first time, but the reasons you’ll visit for the
second or 100th time – or eventually just move here altogether
– will be much more intangible. It’ll be a chance connection
with like-minded people, the perfect valley view that strikes
you at an unexpected moment, the sum of all the elements
that create its relaxed, mountain-town vibe. The Bethel area is
a one-of-a-kind destination. If you’ve been here in one season,
try the opposite next time and re-discover it all over again.
Bring a friend and stay awhile. Like many locals, you might find
yourself saying, I came here for a season...fourteen years ago.

The Bethel area’s entrepreneurial shopkeepers are eager to
help you find what you’re looking for – even if you’re not sure
what that is, or even if it might be at another store. Artists,
farmers, potters, jewelers, and craftspeople create and sell
their wares in small retail shops, out of their studios, and in
gallery settings. Wood is abundant and finds its way into an
array of products, including beautiful furniture and house-
wares. Gift shops and clothing stores will easily fill your retail
therapy needs. You are guaranteed to find something here
that you’ll never find anywhere else.

If your needs are more practical, the Bethel area offers every-
thing you need and nothing you don’t. Hardware, groceries,
appliances, home décor, greenhouses, auto parts, and more
are easy to find. And you can find all the gear you’ll need to
enjoy western Maine’s great outdoors.

classic New England rivers adjacent to the Umbagog National

whitewater ranging from mild to wild. Closest to Bethel is the
Androscoggin River - as it emerges from Lake Umbagog, it offers
an excellent introduction to rafting for first-timers or families. The
Magalloway River is a great choice for groups looking for a little
more excitement, with myriad twists and turns and near Class III/

connects lower Richardson Lake to Lake Umbagog. Nestled deep
in the Maine wilderness, it sees little traffic, making for a unique
experience.
