batches.
Fixing of the tiles
Porcelain tiles with its low water absorption should be fixed with a C2 adhesive to achieve an effective and long-lasting
bond.
The use of cement-sand mortar, either wholly or partially mixed with adhesive may affect the bonding of the installed tiles
and is not recommended.
Instructions on adhesive application and installation procedures should be strictly followed to get the best results.
The substrate receiving the tiles should be free of loose particles, grease, old paints, etc, for the adhesive system to
perform effectively.
Tilling work should be carried out in accordance to Code Of Practice for the Installation of Ceramic Tiles.
To spread the adhesive on the substrate use a trowel with the correct pitch (at least 10 mm for large format tiles) to get a
good distribution of the adhesive.
Coverage of the adhesive coat to the tile back should be at a maximum. Back buttering on the tiles with a scratch coat is
recommended to maximize the coverage.
The recommended installation gap for large format size of tiles should not be less than 3 mm.
Tile installations with butt-joints or insufficient gaps may be susceptible to after installation failure risks.
As an industrial guide, expansion joints should be incorporated as follows:
- Internal installations: every 5 to 10 m.
- External installations: every 3 to 5 m.
Parameter joints should be incorporated for all installations.
To prevent the effect of lippage on installed tiles, the following are recommended:
- Installing the tiles following the directional orientation of the tiles.
- Use of levelling wedge to even out the tiles during tiling (Fig. 1)
- Use a running bond offset of 85:15 pattern for rectangular tiles with a joint width of minimum 4 mm (Fig. 2).
