Malaysia is currently dealing with a serious problem of rising plastic waste and is
attracting less attention from its residents. Although this country is trying to recycle 22
percent of total solid waste by 2020, currently, people are recycling at the rate of 5
percent (Agamuthu & Fauziah, 2011). Every year, Malaysian households generate
19,000 metrictonnes of solid garbage and plastic waste, accounting for 24 percent of the
country’s totalsolid waste (of Statistics Malaysia, 2016). Plastic bags are commonly
used in Malaysiansupermarkets, grocery stores, and restaurants (Porter, 2010).

Problem statement:

Plastic packaging and straws that have washed into the ocean or been discarded in
landfills have long posed a danger to aquatic and land wildlife. By conducting this
research, the researcher would like to identify the level of knowledge, awareness,
attitude and behaviour of households as the cause of plastic waste in Johor Bahru. By
analyzing the knowledge, awareness, attitude and behaviour of household residents on
the issue of plastic waste management in Johor Bahru, researchers are able to identify
the understanding of households towards the plastic waste management. The goal of
this study is to analyze the four characteristics of households and the relationship
between the knowledge, attitude, awareness and behaviour of households on plastic
waste management in Johor Bahru District.

The expected benefits of this study are the researchers is able to better understand the
problem of the current issue being studied in more depth. In addition, researchers can
also take more appropriate action to curb the problem of plastic waste management in
Johor Bahru.

The research design serves as a master plan of the methods and procedures for the
researcher to collect and analyze the data required by the researcher. For this study, the
researcher will conduct a descriptive research design to describe the characteristics of
the population in Johor Bahru. From this study, the researcher wants to identify the level
of knowledge, attitude, awareness and behaviour of households in Johor Bahru towards
the plastic waste management.

The statistical analysis that will be used by the researchers in this study is
inferential statistics. Logistic regression method will be used to determine the
level of knowledge, awareness, attitude and behaviour of the households towards
the plastic waste management in Johor Bahru. Logistic regression used to
measure the categorical relationship between categorical dependent variable and
one or more independent variables.
